    Viewer Question: Sammy Wise GamGee - Hey John. Wondering if you had a chance to see Mulan yet and what your thoughts were. I personally thought it was ok. It’s not an easy story to translate into film, but after watching Aladdin (which I LOVED) I also thought it could have been better. What did you think?

    Disney tried to please the Chinese, who hated the original animated version, while also trying to please the Worldwide audience, who loved the animated feature and didn't really care about the original version.
    Considering that, this project, like Cats, was doomed from the start.

    I really thought the introduction of chi was pointless, and kind of destroyed the character of Mulan for me. But it was clear they were getting notes from the studio to cater more towards Chinese audiences, and apparently, they love that kind of stuff over there.

      @@moonlitebrite9317 Be careful calling someone you disagree with xenophobic. I'm not saying it's a "bad" thing, I'm just saying it didn't work for me. I stand by what I said. I think the chi subplot destroyed the character and made her inherently less interesting and less relatable. Also, the fact that Disney catered to Chinese audiences wasn't a dig at Chinese audiences. It's just a fact.

    • @GiltleyRage
      @GiltleyRage Před 3 lety +2

      It's PC stuff all over the place. What was beautiful in the orginal was the fact that Mulan was just an ordinairy girl who couldn't fit in. And she did great things because of her hard work and sheer will. She was graet role model for kids. Now they just turned her to superhero. She's amazing, and strong with the Force, I mean Chi, perfect from start to finish. Yeah, she's basically Ray. It's boring really.

    • @sherwinlui5758

      I don't think it cater to the Chinese audience. I think it cater to the Chinese government. Their biggest tv show genre is romance. Do you see much romance in the Film? The movie made wuxia(wire fu) look so boring.

      @@moonlitebrite9317 First of all: you don't know what xenophobia is. I mean: get informed about what you are talking about. Second: the problem is obviously not the "chi" per se, but the way it's used. And by that I mean "chi" being treated as a superpower that you can master since birth, if you are "special", like Mulan. This is so dumb that everybody is hating it IN CHINA. Yes, that's the problem: the movie TRIES to cater to the Chinese audience, by adopting elements from Chinese movies, but the REAL PROBLEM is that the writers do not understand much about what makes a story "Chinese". The writers of the movie apparently mistoke "chi" for some kind of superpower, despite being quite obvious in Chinese movies that in order to master you inner chi you MUST BE TRAINED. This is the very basis of Chinese culture, or at least martial arts movies. In fact it's crucial in the Wuxia movies. Let's say it as it is: Mulan was made by an AMERICAN commitee of corporate people who watched some action scenes from Wuxia movies, and did not get the implications and cultural movives of those movies at all.

    Whoever put the trailers for Mulan together did an excellent job. You really got the feeling it was going to be an epic retelling of the story. I do get why people are saying she's more of a superhero now rather than a regular girl who went to war to protect her family. But honestly some of that was hinted at in the trailer. Unless we are to assume she could suddenly flip over people and kick arrows or spears back at opponents without even finishing a full training regiment and never having fought before.
    The introduction of Chi made her abilities a little too convenient. I agree that I didn't really miss the songs, but I do feel it was missing more of a comedic aspect. That doesn't mean they needed to add Mushu to it, but the jokes were far and few in between.
    I think after waiting months for this movie we wanted it to be awesome, and while it wasn't bad, it didn't achieve the greatness most of us were hoping for.

    Although the stars of Mulan are a major draw for us Chinese Asians, I think it is safe to say that we would not not very impressed with the costuming. I think it is because they wanted to sample the design, colours and makeup from the animation, and perhaps they didn’t do research when they drew the costumes for the original movie, the overall looks the outfits appeared to have created with the western eye. If you look at the period Chinese movies made by China, the costuming and make up are very different as compared to those of Mulan. By the way, the matchmaker in the movie is the lead of Come Drink With Me, the 1966 KungFu film. She was the first woman to do her own stunts for the movie because of her dance background. She also played the master of Zhang Ziyi in Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon.

    Mushu does not appear in the live action remake. Disney made the choice to ensure that the live-action remake stayed true to Chinese culture and traditions. Instead, Disney included a phoenix in the film, which is a sign of peace and prosperity in Chinese culture.
    Costume designer Bina Daigeler researched for weeks in China to make sure the wardrobe was accurate.
    Casting directors reviewed more than 1,000 candidates for the role of Mulan. The requirements focused on skills in martial arts, the ability to speak English, and the potential to be an international star.
    First Disney live action remake to receive a PG-13 rating. This was mainly because of the brief shots of corpses and scenes heavily implying death. Otherwise, there is no nudity, profanity or blood.
    Primarily shot in New Zealand, with a few scenes in mainland China.
    Yifei Liu performs 90% of all her stunts as Mulan: horse riding, sword fighting, martial arts, and battle scenes.
    Actor and martial artist Jet Li, who plays the Emperor, admitted turning down the role because of the "script and pay." After his daughters reminded him that it was important for Disney to shine a light on Chinese culture, he backtracked and accepted the role.
    In the animated film, as part of her disguise and transformation to join the military, Mulan cut off most of her waist length hair. This scene wasn't adapted to the live-action film because it was considered redundant. Historically speaking, long hair on men was very common in imperial China, so Mulan having long hair at the military camp would not have been considered unusual.

    If the most ringing endorsement John can give is that there are things that are "nice" it doesn't sound like it crosses the threshold to justify remaking the movie. I get that film is a business so making money can be a very valid reason, but not to why the audience should see it. If there are more endearing Mulan versions out there (animated) and there are more engaging Chinese historical action movies out there (House of Flying Daggers, Hero etc.) then this movie is a pass. Or at least a pass until the end of the year when it can be streamed within the existing subscription model--and that is definitely NOT what Disney was aiming for.

    I'M SO SAD I COULDN'T SEE THIS BEAUTIFUL MOVIE ON THE BIG SCREEN!! 😭 I really enjoyed it. The fight scenes were really cool! I didn't miss the music either, but the little subtle notes was a really nice touch to it. I didn't miss Mushu, i was perfectly fine with making cricket a human, i do wish that her sister got more screen time. The mountain top was a little weird, but i was okay with the way she did it. I think the firework would've been better.

    We viewed the movie on a projector mated to a good surround sound system and thought it was awesome. There is no doubt this movie would have killed it on IMAX. It looks and sounds gorgeous. (BTW the music from most of the songs from the original are mixed into the soundtrack with good effect.) The %@##🤬 pandemic has robbed audiences of a great and exciting interpretation of the Mulan legend. And I do think it’s worth the $30 for a family of at least two. I will say that I would have felt more comfortable purchasing it outright for $25 on iTunes, but I can certainly understand why Disney released it this way. And we’ve already viewed it twice and liked it more the second time!

    It sounds nice to not judge a movie based on its previous, but you have to. That is how we know if something is good or bad because we can compare it to other things. You can like it everyone is allowed to like whatever they want but just because someone likes something doesn’t make it good. By removing Mulans training/ progression and replacing it with super human abilities was a bad idea

    The problem John is that, yes this is a re-imagining of the Mulan fable, Disney still tried to give us small parts of the animated film. They tried to nudge and wink at the fans of the animated version, pandering to the Chinese audience, and was marketed as a remake.

    Appreciate the review, John. This is a lot like the movie Joker, where if you want to enjoy it you have to totally disassociate it with previous interpretations. But when compared to a previous version, it falls short greatly.

    • @barak-rocky-giles2081
      @barak-rocky-giles2081 Před 3 lety

      @Gotham Protector The director literally said that the main character may not even be the Joker, therefore it can't be an origin story for said character. However, by making a film centered in the Batman Universe (by still using Gotham city and still having the Waynes) that opened the door for comparison to any other projects in the same universe.

    • @barak-rocky-giles2081
      @barak-rocky-giles2081 Před 3 lety

      @Gotham Protector You just said, "There are many iterations (multiple choices) of Joker's origin story and Joker (2019) movie is just one of them." That inherently means that they can be compared since they're different versions of the same character just told through another person's p.o.v. This means Joaquin Phoenix (if you pretended he is Joker), Jack Nicholson, Heath Ledger, and Jared Leto can all be compared to each other.
      Your point is valid about the fact that Joker's origin has been left blank on purpose. However, basic logic will tell you that you can't have an "origin" or "beginning" of something and not even had said thing in it, which is what the idea that "[Arthur] might not be Joker." is suggesting.

    • @barak-rocky-giles2081
      @barak-rocky-giles2081 Před 3 lety

      @Gotham Protector I never said it was by my opinion. (If we're going by MY opinion, then Joker was a unnecessarily long, terrible movie that reduced what should've been a incredibly complex storyline to just a boring insight into the sad psyche of someone who has more in common with your typical school shooter than the legendary intellect, diabolical mindset, and pure magnet for chaos that is THE Joker of Batman lore.) THAT would be just going from my opinion.
      However, since my opinion is not fact, I had assumed that our discussion would take place outside of my opinion, which means Arthur may or may not be Joker (btw most people I know assume he is the Joker, since it's umm... the name of the movie and has one main protagonist) according to tbe director. Hence that leaves the door open to comparison. Why do you keep bringing up Jared Leto like he's the only Joker? He's not even the most well known. You have 4 different jokers to pick from (not including the old school show) that you can compare to Joaquin Phoenix. You have Heath Ledger, Jack Nicholson, Jared Leto AND Cameron Monaghan for live action examples. Heath & Cameron and absolutely better than Joaquin. Jack is arguably equal. Jared is definitely worse than him. THAT is the comparison.

    They wanted a darker, more mature take on the original story. But they didn't commit to it. No blood, Mulan runs around kicking away spears and fighting with no armor on at all besides plot armor. Why would they include magic with a witch and chi all that crap but no mushu? I felt every character was bland and uninteresting. I really didn't care about Mulan after she let her hair down. She was more fun to root for as an underdog trying to blend in with the men. When she let her hair down and embraced her chi, she became an invincible god on the battlefield. The final battle just had no spectacle. Instead of at night on the roof of the palace, it was during the day in some construction site. The whole thing just felt meh to me. Not terrible. Just not nearly as good as it could have been. I respect your opinion dude. But comedy is something a lot of ppl enjoy even if its not essential for a movie. Heck even Kungfu Panda (a more Chinese accurate film) made room for it. I enjoyed Mushu in 1998. Mushu shouldn't be put down just because hes not everyone's favorite. That's hypocrisy. Because some ppl may like the Witch but I've seen comments with ppl saying she was pointless and messed up some of the film, just like you said with Mushu. See? Everyone's a fan of something different. And who said Mushu had to act the SAME way if he returned? He could've had a different personality. He was more than just some talking dragon so whomever says that is someone who has seen the cartoon in a million years. Mushu contributed a lot to Mulans success. Those who don't acknowledge that are just blinded by their dislike for Mushu.
