Asian markets: Where old Asian ladies hit you with their carts on purpose and they get mad when they hurt you.
One time I was calmly choosing apples and this one lady "accidentally" hit me with her cart. She yelled at me to move out of the way and followed it with a "you crazy!"

I think the reason why the 99 ranch is so nice is because it used to be a Ralph's. I think that kinda of affected its style. Now I see the Asian grandmas at the sprouts across the street near Burlington.

That is the nicest 99 ranch I've seen but I love me a good ol' Asian market. The Seafood City where I live has gotten nicer over the years but it still has that Asian market feel you're talking about.

Omg ! yeeeeeesssss! LOL when we 1st came to America there wasn't any Hispanic stores and only a limited number of Asian stores and we shopped there every week! my parents would take 2 busses to get there and walk for dayz to get us the food that Americans thought were disgusting and we missed so much from home the dingy smells bring back so many memories lol love you David!

I like these kind of markets/shops because when i'm being followed in these places I like to give the people or person following me a good hunt and this place is big so you know there gonna put in work.
Glad I was born and raised in Taiwan, then came to America after high school. Watching Asian Americans learn about their food and culture in America is such a struggle. But you deserve some credit for trying.

We actually shop at Vietnamese stores all the time David. I am an US Born Vietnamese Hybrid baby. My parents and sisters used to eat Pork Uterus all the time. They would first clean it, and then they would boil it with Pig Heart, Beef Tongue, and other Innards. Then my mom would take pork blood, along with herbs, spices, tofu, and ground pork and make a sausage and stuff it into an intestine. Then later they would cut everything up and eat it with vermicelli and a Shrimp Paste prepared sauce with more herbs.
Also, we have 99 Ranch here in Arizona. They have a different membership. Its every single day if you have their membership card, you get 10% off of your entire order. We too have angry asian ladies yelling at each other in different languages. You might have gone while they were at temple or something ;) |
The chicken that you were looking at as well. My mom told me that some Chinese people believe that if you boil it with spices and herbs and drink the broth and eat the chicken that it has medicinal qualities. We never ate it though.

well, it did say grand opening and had what looked like very spacious parking with perfect divider lines, that should've already clued you in on how the inside was going to be. lol I loved going to the old Chinatown markets in NYC where the markets have barely any space for 1 person to get by sideways haha, good stuff

dude! Peddler's Village. (That place was like a plaza, filled with Asians selling everything. Clothes, Shoes, Jewelry (I got my ears pierced there, and now they are closed... >.>), weaves, hair products, everything but food. lol)

Haha. Before the Filipino equivalent, Seafood City, ever existed in Cali, it was all about sketchy Chinese supermarkets for me. I haven't been to a 99 Ranch in years. The fishy-butcher smell and dingy floors and old people yelling in Cantonese...good times. Parents would do major food hauling there. Can't believe the stores are actually clean and you can get a membership there now 😂
Lol even though the market has been open for like 3 months, we'll leave the grand opening sign all year long.
