- Warcraft was panned before it even opened. Video game movies have an uphill battle right from inception. Maybe the critics were wrong? Here's everything right with Warcraft: The Beginning.
Just as an aside, I've noticed people putting a little too much importance on the final win score of films for comparison. Hopefully this video's score will put that to rest.

As a WoW player I personally fucking loved this movie, yes it wasn't a masterpiece but God I geeked out the whole film
Angry Welshman I can’t afford that game😂
Same as I said in Kilofskis comment I have a few problems with some of the lore changes that I feel would have been better kept in the story but generally I loved the movie.
Me still waiting for Warcraft 2 but way more about Warcraft 3
yeah, maybe about why garrosh was right all along
And as somebody that never played the game, the movie was really enjoyable Imo
One of the best parts of the movie is how the magic was portrait. I especially loved how the difference between a noob and a master was shown, with the drop-out having to grab a chunk of chalk and draw the circle while reciting the entire incantation while the arch-mage only had to wave a hand.
"...but I know with my addictive personality WoW would take over my life"
looks up from herb gathering and Nobel videos* "what spec is 'life'?"
Underrated comment.
Felt the same way: When I got Everquest I popped the CD in the computer, played the sample game, then at the end of it when I was standing in front of the door saying "Click here to go online" I popped the CD out and threw it in the trash. I knew if I went in I would be living in a trailer in Kansas with a huge satellite dish for internet and my life would be over.
nobel is the reason i resubbed in wod
Still watch Nobbel even though I haven’t played WOW in awhile!
They even placed the Stormwind flight path in the correct place.
Just amazing attention to detail :D
well they shouldn't have paid too much attention to small details and focused on actual big details like getting half of the lore right and not messing it up ENTIRELY.
@@Mishu777 CinemaWins??
We got another angry Fanboy/girl
@BerserkerA parallel universe where Ner'zhul's father used condoms and for some reasons Doomhammer decided to join the Frostwolf clan.
@BerserkerI'm a big warcraft lore fan and i turned it off 20 minutes into the movie.
Berserker I too am a lore freak.
I think the movie was fine.
Sad we probably won’t get another.
I do want a sequel to this to be made.
I bet they won't make it because legendary not gain profit. U know in usa this movie only get less than 50 million. China save this movie by increase it to 240million. Director said the legendary pictures Will release director's cut if it manage to gain profit at 300 million and we all know they not get that number.
No? It made 45 million in the US and 386 million in other countries for a total of 433 million. It had a budget of 160 million so they made 273 million on it.
That's not quite how Hollywood accounting works but even if it wasn't convoluted, the 273 isn't still quite right.
There's advertising to pay for, and while the studio gets the biggest cut of ticket sales they still have to rent the theaters they screen in.
For this movie to get 300 million profit, it would have to had passed a billion worldwide.
China did a great thing for this movie, but still didn't save it.
Which is too bad, I thought it was ok, but felt if it was successful it could get better.
Do you mean an Expansion Pack???
Same it did well in China I think it was so maybe someone will pick it up I had some issues with the lore changes first black hands BLACK HAND was made of elemental stone originally so it shouldn’t have been destroyed with just one shot thats just a small one there are more but it was a pretty good movie I’d definitely watch any sequels.
I love this movie, and want more like it. This is a worldbuilding movie, not everyone likes them, but leads to better and bigger movies
Prophetic ShadeZ please no. It was riddled with plot holes, confusion, incredibly forced relationships. Some really dull acting..etc.
agreed you have true eyes my friend
warcraft lore is full of plot holes
Yeah, it was a good movie. A shame it got ripped into unfairly.
Did a good job worldbuilding.
us critics hate all video game movies
Side fun fact: the "for the alliance" at the end was the audience from the BlizzCon audience from there year before the movie was released. At least that's how they explained it to us at Blizzcon when we were shouting it while watching some early release footage. Pretty cool tie in for fans.
I saw the video of it. Found it kinda funny because they had to go something like "I know Horde players are louder, but I need you to dig deep and scream it"
How is that polymorph not a win?
60 seconds, just like Soreceress does in WC3.
@@PUARockstar and the mages in WoW
probably because he doesn't play WoW lol. i mean , im sure he vaguely understands the reference, but it doesn't quite hit home teh same way.
I watched this movie with my husband when it came out, and was so very confused the whole time. I've recently started playing WoW and the first time I learned Polymorph I laughed so hard. It was the last thing I had expected to be a part if my skill set.
I'll just say it.
I LOVED THIS MOVIE
Yep yep yep and now i am going to rewatch it. 4th time I think. :)
Sebastian Fawkes - Sebastian's Mind It had much more potential yet it was still real good.
i liked it too, but i can see how people can dislike it. but if you wanne watch the movie you should atleast like fantasy, because i think most people who disliked it didnt like fantasy
+Stalker747 alf Well why would some one not liking fantasy would watch a movie about a game called orks vs humans? I think bigest reason how much they put into the short time confused people.
I agree, I think it could have been longer, but everything in it was great.
I read a critic review that said this movie had "Subpar CGI".
How exactly is 1:20 SUB-PAR?! I don't understand people sometimes.
I have seen plenty of CGI haters say this movie had horrible cgi,
I have seen plenty of idiots if you ask me
Durotan's sacrifice DOES makes a different, because Orgrim would eventually overthrow Gul'Dan and became Warchief :D
I FOLLOW A TRUE ORC!
Ah yes...this movie reminded me what Durotar and Orgrimmar TRULY mean:D
Aoyai baba yes but do youz follow gork and mork
Currently, we have no true Orcs that are being highlighted? Thrall? Saurfang? Cowards and hypocrites. You know who NEEDS to be Warchief? Una Eyegouge. At least she isn't a Alliance cum-bucket.
Orgrim Doomhammer was still a puppet of the Burning Legion. Him overtaking Gul'dan changes little to the fact the Horde's true purpose was to destroy human/dwarf/elf resistance to better allow the arrival of the Burning Legion. Orgrim would have done the same, had Gul'dan not screwed him at the last second during the siege of Lordaeron. Once Orgrim had served his purpose, the Legion would have discarded him.
he said 'immediate' payoff. like, we don't see the difference they make in this film.
This movie was great. It didn't follow Warcraft word for word (neither did LotR) but it was very entertaining. I didn't even notice Grom/Kargath at the end. They must be saving them for the sequel (if there is one).
One thing I liked about this movie that I didn't like in LotR was that every Orc in LotR was a generic evil monster with no real backstory besides, "They're corrupted elves and now follow Sauron", whereas in Warcraft these Orcs have both a good and bad side.
but orcs are vastly different in Lotr universe and for fuck sake if you know nothing about lotr or middlee earth in general you shouldnt speak. Lotr is not the only work of Tolkien, believe me Nothing can be compared to "Middle-Earth" despite my favourite character being Arthas. You should really read all the Tolkien's work and you will understand. Orcs were never meant to be badass(except for Uruk-hai) the "Scourge" is more close to the orcs in lotr than here...Peace
@Scar You got that the wrong way around.
Trolls that lived around the Well of Eternity evolved into Night Elves, some of whom later evolved into High Elves who, again much later after Arthas' raid on Silvermoon and the corruption of the Sunwell changed into Blood Elves.
And just for completion's sake we now have Void Elves as well who're Blood Elves who embraced the void.
tl;dr: Don't talk shit about a franchise when you don't even know the basics of it's lore.
Considering the orcs in Tolkien's works are sentient, thinking creatures that are essentially enslaved by Sauron, no, they aren't comparable to the mindless and insect-like Scourge. I do agree that the bad guys in LOTR are, for the most part, not fleshed out at all, but there's a reason for that. At the time it was written, something like giving the villain personality was pretty unthinkable.
@@katatonikbliss I'm glad JRRT stuck to only the thinkable in his epic novel.
Hidden win: Directed by the late David Bowie's son. David Bowie changed his name from David Jones as there was a famous Davy Jones when he started and it would be confusing or seem like he was copying him. The director of this film is Duncan Jones.
I'd like to think that David Bowie would be proud of his son for undertaking such an enormous task. RIP David Bowie.
I remember seeing this movie with some friends. I'm the only one interested in Warcraft. After it ended they all said how boring it was while I was in shock over how awsome it was. In my opinion it's the best video game movie ever.
because "best video game movie ever" is SUCH a great title
It is a great title. Considering how many bad video game movies there are, if there's one that's even remotely good, that's a win.
In my opinion, you'd have to be a hard-core Warcraft fan to truly appreciate this movie. Me personally, I think it's pretty average. Not a great movie, but certainly not terrible either.
As a Warcraft fan, this movie sucks.
Master Penguin as a non warcraft fan, this movie was amazing
Frankly the CGI looked great, but still had a very distinctive look that ended up leaving the humans seeming more out of place visually than the orcs in this film, ironically.
Hm, just watched it, and I never played a Warcraft game. I just enjoyed it as a well done high fantasy and don't get all the hate. The huge disparity between critics and audience opinions had me thinking that critics still have reservations against high fantasy and don't trust a wider audience with complex worldbuilding.
you would get the split in the audience if you played the game, or read the books, you would understand why then. because the lore behind this movie was broken.
We all should be glad that this channel exists to explain positive things about the movie or just clarify the whole that we ourselves can't explain to others.
Agreed. It's good that someone out there is deliberately pointing out everything good in movies, instead of constantly trashing perfectly good movies for things that mostly fall under "personal bias".
Regardless of what people say now, when the movie regarding the Arthas story line comes out, this series, and world will become inbued even more so in pop culture, and when they come running claiming this movie series as great, and it's lore as breathtaking, I will say I was here from the beginning.
Hell fucking yeah, in terms of continuity it may take a while untill you reach the "Arthas- ark" but even everything that happened before is just great: Orc- Camps, Blood of Manaroth (shit will appear I tell you), Thralls rising, Burning Crusade, ....
yeah he's right, literally only China saved that movie from flopping.
You can't even spell sequel right. And it broke China's records and in total they made 400 mil so I think there's a big chance of getting a "sequal"
TheDromes Warcraft in term of box office only lose only 15 million dollars max. They probably already made most of that money back through merchandise in China and DVD released already. And not to mention Blizzard Activision, the company that make this game, just opened their movie own studio last year and already making a Call of Duty Cinematic Universe. They themselves love the movie and expressed an interest in the franchise so it is not likely that we won't see a sequel, just won't back by the same studio. It like Square Enix, doesn't matter how much critics hate on it. They will keep making Final Fantasy movies.
However, even we look at objectively as in reality. Blizzard Activision is already open a studio with the purpose of going to film industry. It is not likely they are not going to push for sequel. Just may be not for America and with the same studio however it is obvious that this movie dominate foreign box office. I dont see why they themsevles wouldnt push for their own franchise. If they are willing to push for Cod.
As an avid Warcraft consumer, I loved this movie. It was a total fan service film and I’m not ashamed to admit that. I’d say it falls in the category of movies that are made for its prime audience, like the new Dredd adaptation. Enjoy it for what it is, load up Warcraft 2 and play a character from level 1 to 120. The world and lore is massive and it takes years to enjoy it.
I agree
"It's too difficult to animate Jon petting Ghost"
Warcraft: Hold my beer.
Played wow for over a decade... i adore this movie!
I desperately want Trolls and Tauren in the next one.
Trolls, might come on 2nd, but Tauren were met during WC3 when thrall led horde to kalimdor.
I want more dwarves!
Warcraft 2 Wrath of the Litch King.
No more to say
@@ThrashRats What about Thrall's story? They could probably mesh the arcs together...
@@kennethsatria6607 Yeah, we can put green jesus over anything basically, dude's present in like every expansion.
One thing that really pisses me off about the bad reviews is that I doubt the movie was reviewed fairly. What I mean is that... the reviewer probably didn't even care about video games, fantasy or Warcraft. Had no interest whatsoever.
Now, who would you put to review a superhero movie? Obviously you wouldn't put someone who usually reviews a fun childrens movie to review it. No, you put a fan or someone who knows about superhero movies to review. And the same goes for the oppersite!
In this case, from what I've heard, most of the critics weren't even into fantasy. They didn't know about Warcraft and a lot of them didn't even seem to care what it was all about. IMO that is a very bad review. And shows why the movie had so many bad reviews overall.
At least I feel that way. Its not a perfect movie by any means, but someone gave the movie 0/10. I mean... seriously? How can a movie, thats as beautiful as this one with the scenery and CGI, give it 0/10? Thats not only weird and upsetting. It literally feels rude to me :P
Mucrush I haven't played the original Warcraft games though I know what was the story in them and I will admit I'm not a fan of the film.
For me, it's because of the lack of focus of the plot and the weak human characters. But I really liked the world building and the attention to detail, the Orc characters and performances, the visuals (for the most part) and the film score.
But I can definitely understand the love people have for the film. In fact I would had like to see a sequel despite what I said. I think my issue with the movie was there was decent ideas for the human characters but because of the lack of focus, it's poorly developed and when there is emotional payoffs, the impact for me never came.
But I refuse to say the film is in anyway even near the worst films of 2016 because there were things I liked. I still adore Duncan Jones as a filmmaker as I championed his films Moon and Source Code. I met him in person and his next project he told the audience I was with in an interview he did is very promising. It's called Mute and it's in the same universe of Moon.
Oh god the injustice.
Too many kneejerk reactions about "LotR clone" which...means they didn't do much research, if any. Since it was based off of Warhammer...
@@thecinematicmind If you know the origin story of WoW, you will know where was the lack of focus came from. To build a game that big, blizzard needs to stretch and stitch the story here and there. And if the fan didn't like the film because it was different than the novel, well... the novel is not perfectly the same as the origin story as well. But, the cast of this movie is bad tho... I saw one or two acting quality that didn't communicate well in the scene such as Garona when she waiting Medivh to awake, she totally broke her character with her face act and gesture.
@Nobody Knows hmmm, true though I've never really had a problem with that. I've always been able to make sense of the movie's plot lines, and don't really understand where the confusion comes from. Though I'd like to understand.
Mostly cause it seems weird to me when I hear about it, and before the warcraft movie I honestly had zero knowledge of the lore past what little I played of warcraft 3, warcraft 3 frozen throne, and the super tiniest smidge of WoW.
Outside of that, no knowledge, and none of those titles gave me any context on how or when the Orcs came. Nor did it go into much detail over the lore of the characters.
So I honestly didn't have a basis for comparison for the Movie and the Game universe. Essentially going in blind.
And I enjoyed it, I could follow all the various plots and the characters were pretty good, able to keep me entertained and interested.
"Murloc!"
I have no idea why but I keep laughing at that.
I watched my little brother play the heck out of World of Warcraft because I liked its story so when I heard this movie was being made, I went and shook the life out of my brother out of excitement.
I'm mad that it was given negative reviews but I'm glad a lot of people really loved it!
(I am new to this channel, and was ecstatic when I saw this EGA.)
EDIT: Why did I watch my brother instead of playing it? Easy. I suck at playing it. I can barely last 5 minutes.
After the Cinema Sins video on this, I needed this one...
I never played the game, but I liked and understood this movie
same
Yeah same for me, the only thing I know about WOW was the Dranei race ( doubt I spelled it right) and I look forward to next movies being about the other races joining the two sides and how the opposite side dealing with that.
You spelled it right no worries.
It's technically 'Draenei', but who cares.
Warcraft is RTS with very simplsistic style so... it is not hard to understand just it goes really quick and unlike any game you cannot take a moment to rethink the story and continue it next hour.
I've played a grand total of about 20 minutes of World of Warcraft and know absolutely nothing about the lore, but I loved this movie! I'm also a huge fan of both the LOTR and Hobbit trilogies. I never compared Warcraft to LOTR while watching it, because I knew it was a completely different take on the genre. This biggest draw of this film, for me, was it's take on the orcs and how they aren't just mindless savages. Seeing depth, heroism, and even nobility from the orcs is something I wasn't expecting in a big-budget motion picture.
Also, Warcraft has the best onscreen depiction of dwarves of any film from this genre. Hopefully we will get to see more of the dwarves in future films.
You actually made me appreciate this film more, I originally had a "good, not great" feel about it but i think thats because i wasnt prepared for the direction they took it. Also i know little about warcraft lore before 3 aside from key events. I do still feel that those who never played warcraft may have some difficulty enjoying this.
Personally, I thought it was really high quality (like cgi, environment and etc), the only problem was that it was too fast-paced (which is understandable since there were so many different stories going on at the same time)
Personally I feel like there could have been a trilogy for the first game alone. But you can imagine the money required for something like that
Blending the human actors with the cgi backgrounds was poorly executed in my eyes...which made the orcs shine even more.
actually i thought it was extremely well done, unlike the orcs in the hobbit movies which were all glossy like they had a layer of slime on them, the orcs here most definitely seem the most real ive seen in CGI for a long time.
I tend to believe that the pacing may also be producer interference as there are several extra scenes that were fully animated but were cut for unknown reasons.
47 minutes of the movie's runtime was taken out so take that into consideration.. I wanted to see the trolls! D:
one of the best YT movie channels
Kyle Broflovski maybe, but some of those video essay channels are insane.
tell me kyle are you gonna apologise to cartman for what you did to him in season 20

I know that this channel started as being based on/inspired by Cinema Sins, but honestly I am more excited to see Cinema Wins in my subscription feed than Cinema Sins now, kudos to this channel.
thats cause Cinema sins make you Think all Movies suck while this channel makes you apreciate Movies and enjoy them.
I remember going into the movie and expecting a train wreck and came out amazed. The attention to detail the creators put into it for the Warcraft gaming community was amazing. I am waiting for a sequel, one that shows the events of Warcraft II; although that'll likely have to be two or three movies because of scope.
Wait holy shit that was literally him leveling up!!! How accurate do you need to be to the games xD xD
He sure must have gotten a lot of XP for killing the FREAKING GUARDIAN OF AZEROTH lol...guess thats why Khadgar is one of the most powerful mages lol
I like to think the dings from the Wins Counter during the brutal lightning round were characters leveling up co-inciding with each hit during the battle scenes.
This movie has the best showcase of people using magic I've ever seen in a movie ever. Every magical bit just felt real and practical. I really hope theres more to see. Thank you, China.
Agree. The magic effects and the environments where the best to me.
Honestly probably one of my favorite uses of magic in the movie was when khadgar used sheep on the guard. I laughed so hard because it was so accurate to the game
well u can actually transform other players on sheep with the mage class
I believe its Golem, not Gollum. Gollum is the dude from LoTR.
I say the latter cause dragon age
You're right. Gollum is a character. Golem is a classification.
For any WoW players i'd like to call it "The Curator"
It's definitely Golem. Also Orgrim, not Ogrim (even though the film marketing crew themselves misspelled it on those new collectible cards they're putting out with the blu-ray).
Not the Curator. The Curator is a mech. This is just a clay golem.
From all that I've seen from people who have watched it, people kinda split into two groups.
There are those who really enjoyed it, and just had fun with it and think it's a good movie.
And then there are those who are wrong.
LOL.
so i am wrong for wanting them to actually follow their own lore. making up new lore simply because the audience that didn't play the game could follow along, is kinda retarded, and that's why the fan base is split on it, not because they are wrong.
@@demonpride1975 Ikr. Brings in Chris Metzen for story directing. Still completely fucks it up (Probably didn't like the original story and forced their 'artistic liberties' on him)
When I sat down to watch this movie for the first time and the introduction theme started, I knew I was gonna love this movie.
OMG thank you for doing this. The movie was great in my opinion and I was so saddened by the lack of praise.
It's not a perfect movie for sure, but most movies aren't. And for a video game movie this was damn well impressive.
IIRC they profited 200m~ on the movie over 2 months, so it's likely we'll get another :D
Also that murloc is 110% blizzard pandering to us, and I'm okay with that.
I've never played WoW but I really enjoyed the movie! I would definitely watch a sequel.
Ho-ly shit. I never noticed the level up effect!
How could I have missed this?
Same here.
Ok so I watched this, watched the movie, watched this again then watched cinema sins of this movie. And my gosh was he too harsh on this movie. It was good(not the best movie ever but good!) There is some serious hate out there for this movie but WHY?! Its just a fun fantasy movie.
every fantasy movie is just a fun fantasy movie
I think part of it was how long the movie was stuck in development hell. People built up all sorts of expectations about what it could be. The other big issue this movie dealt with was Warcraft 1's lore was super bare-bones, and what was later established around it (prior to Chronicles) was a sloppy hodgepodge of retcons and word-of-God. So the filmmakers, understandably, went with an alternate take on it which alienated the purists. Me, I really enjoyed the film, and loved all the shout-outs, easter eggs, and fandom winks, but I can understand why some fans were really put off by the AU take.
because this movie was supposed to be a love letter to the fans, and yet screwed the lore badly on it. like oh i don't know, orcs were not changed because of the fel, they were changed because they drank the blood of manaroth.
Because it completely ignored and butchered the lore, of course that would piss fans off. Dalaran floating when it damn well was not in that time period, the retarded cliche hollywood love sacrifice on the battlefield instead of Garona assassinating him in his throne room. I could go on but I've not watched that trash since its release and its so forgettable I barely remember it.
The point - Fans get pissed off when directors with no clue of the source material take artistic liberties and make changes. Outsides love it cause 'oooooh ma hollywood action'.
@@ElainaMaruyama Preach! That Garona sacrifice part really pissed me off. Only thing i enjoyed about this movie was the visuals, nothing more.
While the orcs were great I could never see the movie as a win....because there are only 3 god damn seconds of Murlocs! They should have reduced the screen time of the humans to 3 seconds (as a cameo) and instead show the epic relationship between orcs and murlocs. 2 hours of mrrrgling (with no subtitles) would be the biggest win ever...for me.
The 3seconds humans cameo is King Mrgl-Mrgl
Naomi da
Well..king Mrgl-Mrgl was a Night elf not a human...but still great cameo
Yeah, I realized that right after posting my comment...
I would pay hundred bucks to see that. In fact, Blizzard make the next expansion about Murlock. The sales number would sky rocket.
Playing a Murloc would be a life long dream come true.
3:35 Woah, I didn't noticed Khadgar crying before!
Before watching this, I wanted to say:
THANK YOU! This movie was so underrated! It has it's faults, sure, but mainly that's having the guts to get all the world building and necessary lore into one movie, and it being a lot to take in. It was a great movie, and on par with other top billing films! I don't know what your personal opinion is of it yet, but still: Thank you for the vid!
Fuck it
I never played WoW
But I adoooooored this movie
me neither. I played Warcraft 3 and loved this movie
Same, the first glimpse of this world I got was from this film, which was good
I really hope that this franchise survives long enough to give us a movie about the events of Warcraft 3!
Keaton Same. Eager to see more of these!
are you talking about the partners that made the movie with blizz or Blizz them selfes? cause blizz has more money than oprah they only did this for fun
As someone who has NEVER even played WoW I don't understand the lore. I enjoyed this movie, but can a real fan please tell me what was so bad about it?
AS a big time Wow player [lore player even more ] nothing all the big lore edits as someone who care and loves wow lore i can see why they did it
people are just looking for something to hate
To the "real" fans it was like the changes to Lord of the Rings that Peter Jackson made - they resent them as not being "true" to the source. Hardcore fans were upset. Most fans (like this one) don't care, and are excited to see the world they love on the big screen.
Honestly I loved this movie quite a lot, but personally I found that some of the story changes they made for the movie were not as great as the story moments they replaced. Such as Ogrim Doomhammer killing Blackhand and beating Gul'dan into submission to then take over the Horde in the first game, and the razing of Stormwind. As well as adding in a son for Lothar in the movie. In the games it was his honour as a knight and pride in his kingdom that made him the leader that he was, and then it was the loss of his kingdom and king (and not his son) that drove him to eventually command the forces of the Alliance against the Horde. It is just little changes like that to motivation and tone that irked me about the movie, but over all I did quite enjoy it.
From what I've read most aficionado's loved this film, but it was the casual U.S. American movie-goer that disliked it.
There is a lot of lore stuff I don't remember but from what I do remember, it is mostly the ending that is the most severe lore change. Garona does not kill the king by her own hand, she is instead controlled by Gul'Dan to do it. Which is fairly traumatic for her as she is forced to kill a good friend. And it is done during a siege on Stormwind where the city falls too. That is the only change I feel would have been more powerful to watch. But I guess that would require a much bigger budget. Though I think they actually was going to do it that way as one of the posters for the movie of Garona has Stormwind burning in the background.
Small changes here and there has also been done, like giving Lothar a son and Khadgar is supposed to be Medivhs apprentice not someone who renounced his oath to become the next guardian. But as a big Warcraft fan, these changes does not bother me too much. I think they where unnecessary but I still greatly enjoyed the movie. I just look at the story in the movie to be an alternate universe or something like that.
I didn't notice the Murloc until I heard it. Then you said "MURLOC!".
That's when I saw it. LOL!
As someone who has studied the lore for a solid 4-5 years, the story was vastly improved. Garona being brainwashed into killing the king wasn't nearly as interesting as doing it for a Machiavellian reason.
Also her being Medivh's daughter instead of lover is way better for their dynamic and doesn't lead to he who shall not be mentioned being born.
The only people complaining about the lore being changed are elitists who want to show off they know the lore.
Translating a complex story and characters into a too short for its own good movie is what this did best IMO. It streamlined and connected lore and characters into a cohesive narrative for the medium of film.
Are you meaning to tell me at Gul'dan's voice actor actually was named Daniel?
He's the true Gul'daniel!
I watched this with the only Warcraft lore I knew being Hearthstone cards and some places (ie. Blackrock) And I thought the first 20 minutes or so were extremely rushed like going from place to place. However it did make me want to go and research WoW lore so that is a plus. I thought it was a decent film.
I felt it was rushed too, BUT, this single movie could have easily been a trilogy based of the first game. Obviously the budget for that trilogy would be ridiculous. So I understand if they have to cram a lot of stuff at the start of the movie.
Well it was very rushed, they apparently cut over 40 minutes from the movies. And if you see the deleted scenes included on the bluray. A lot of them takes place during the first 20 minutes of the movie. And a lot of it is much needed character development stuff.
Joeey G There was suppose to be a whole scene and exposition about young Medivh becoming the next guardian hinting Sargeras.
There was suppose to be a scene confirming Garona origin through Medivh.
There are also suppose to be an epilogue at the end where Khadgar talk to a crying Varian Wrynn. Guess that never make it
Thinh Vo Really wish we all got to see the true vision they had for this movie. Hate that studios always meddle so much with production, cutting things that would definitely have improved the movie.
Never played Warcraft ever...
That being said..
This is one of my favorite movies of all time.
Man Dude Bro, I love this movie. I always feel sooo good after watching it, or seeing Scenes of it, or listen to the music, or even think about it. The story is really dark, but somehow I feel happy after watching it, maybe because its sooo good to see those characters life in action. Hardcore Warcraft Fan.
One of my favorite movies ever. I admit I am extremely biased, as I've loved Warcraft since I was seven years old, but I really enjoy the movie objectively as well. I think 50% of critics would like it more if they watched it a second time. Yeah, the pace is fast, but everything you need to know (besides who the Draenei slaves are) is explained.
And Medivh is Garona's father in this universe! Whaaaat!
I think you've just expressed EVERYTHING I thought about. What a terrible box office in US! in my country(Russia) it did as well as any movie of such genre would do, and it also has a lot of Warcraft fans. But for US the box office is so low, it's incomprehensible. It just feels like it was mostly game fans went to see it and no one else.
Overall - an amazign fantasy movie which I'll be praying that the sequels will come out to
you can blame the shitty US critics for that (also americans tend to blindly follow the critics and avoid any movie with negative reviews by critics even if regular people praise it)
American Critics and Rotten Tomatoes can all go and f* themselves. I was almoust afraid to go see the movie, because of all the reviews, yet my childhood games are prince of persia and warcraft 3. And Prince of Persia too, I loved that film, even if it was a semi departure from the games, it was good. But critics had to hate it too.
That's the problem with critics. They watch so many damned movies, they can't sit down and enjoy a decent movie anymore. Us people who have different jobs or work whole day, we can sit down and even enjoy something like an indian drama since it's a break from our lives.
US critics and moviegoers also gotten a bit more political these days. They tried to sabotage Captain Marvel before the movie even came out just because of what the main actor said.
I’m really glad you made this CZcams channel, just love good vibes for movies
This movie was great. I’ve been a Warcraft and WOW fan for as long as I can remember, watching my cousins playing it growing up and then playing myself. God only knows how many hours I’ve sank into my Main, so when this movie came out I was excited and I went knowing they had/wanted to change the storyline I was ok with that. It broke my soul when Weta Workshop had their auction on their props because that told me my hope for a sequel was gone. But I own physical and digital copies so I’ll always have this.
Same over 15 years and only have 7 120s with 5 more leveling.
I think the movie was good. I’m a lore freak but didn’t really mind the change.
I just want this movie franchise to do well so we may get a StarCraft movie one day :/ . Please! I beg you, Blizzard.
Zacarias Recabarren what about an Overwatch movie i mean they could make a prequel movie to explain the stuff that happened before the game/animated shorts imo
Overwatch is too recent for me to care that much. I've been playing starcraft since I was a child. Not to say I'd not love more context for the game (I really think it needs a campaign mode).
Zacarias Recabarren everyone in the community does
*cough* Overwatch movie *cough*
Yes, that is also what i want too.
I thought this movie was a movie about the first Warcraft games, 1-3, not WoW? I played the first ones as a kid, never played WoW and completely followed the movie, no problem. I think the dorks bitching about this being unfaithful to 'lore' need to calm down. It was a pretty good movie.
Just the first one, not 2 and 3 :D
As Phan said, it's about just the first game (Orcs and Humans as mentioned in the video). It lays the ground work for the stories told in the second and third games but it exclusively follows the story of the first.
It's about half of the first game. I do have 1 problem with them changing the lore though. The human was supposed to be wiped out after losing at least 3/4 of their army after the last part. In the lore they went and seek shelter/help from another human king in a faraway continent. Now they just miraculously produce army on their own after the defeat.
Frzned9x
I've never actually played warcraft but as far as I know the humans of azeroth never left azeroth. The nation of Stormwind, unable to fight the orcs by themselves, sought help from kingdoms in the north like dalaran and lordaeron, thus forming the alliance. I also haven't actually seen the movie either but this video had a scene of them chanting about the alliance.
I mean, given warcraft lore they COULDN'T seek help from a human king in a faraway continent since azeroth was the only continent with humans on it. The only other continents were kalimdor or northrend and neither of those had human kingdoms.
War450 Lordaeron is in a different continent than Azeroth. I remember them running away on ships to Lordaeron in a cutscene from the first game. Not really that experienced with wow either.
Googled the map, they are on 1 continent called "eastern kingdoms" in naming but in 2 different continents physically. Azeroth is half way accross the globe from Lordaeron (vertically). Lordaeron is in between Ironforge (Dwarf capital) and Quel'thalas (High Elves capital) so it is capable of rallying the high elves and the drawf, which are inaccessable from Azeroth by land unless you went through a mountain. The Orc was supposed to conquered the lower half of the continent.
This movie was incredible, in my opinion. The details were there, and I never played Warcraft, only a little of WoW. I really hope they make more of these
I really loved your cutting in the brutal speed round. Reminded me a little of Matthew Vaughn's in the Kingsman movie with the frameskips
Everything great about Spectre please. I'm probably amongst few people that really enjoyed the movie.
u enjoyed it too
*I
I will admit that Spectre had potential, but if that's the last Bond movie Craig does, that's also a bit of a travesty to end his stint on. There were a lot of great ideas (the growing irrelevance of MI6 in the digital age hitting even harder than in Skyfall; Bond going rogue on a semi-personal mission; the whole relationship between Bond and the girl who's name I forget and am too lazy to google), but they were stifled by poor ideas (twisting in the MI6 irrelevancy with the actor of Moriarty leading the alternative charge: you're giving away that he's a secret bad guy literally the second he comes on-screen (and even that reveal wasn't handled all that well, like even the characters within the movie were expecting it as much as the audience was); the linking of Bond of Blofeld through foster parenting that was wholly unnecessary and honestly detracted from the character of Blofeld by taking him from a fairly decent criminal mastermind who's plans James keeps mucking up and turning him into what amounts to the replacement villain from Luke Cage on Netflix).
It also had something I honestly didn't believe was possible; a boring car chase. And that car chase itself also had no reason to be boring from a theoretical standpoint; it's Bond in a suped-up sports car trying to escape super-henchman Batista who's being set up as the Jaws of the film. A chase with that set-up should not be boring, but that chase was.
I did enjoyed it too
But to be the "last one" from Daniel Craig as 007 it was very simple and well kinda average as an action movie
It was good as a movie itself but considering the cast that it had like having the great christoph walts as the main villain
It is disappointing.
Vincent Nguyen I enjoyed it,it was the last movie I watched with my dad
"MRRULUURLLULLGORGLORBAH" - Murloc
I love how you do your honest opinion at the end of each video. Nice touch.
This movie is low key dope. Hope a sequel eventually comes out.
@@lekrieg8618 that’s all want out of life to be honest
I feel that the greatest mistake of the movie was to not spoonfeed all the details and lore. I may be a little biased since as a big fan of the Warcraft lore I already knew the characters and settings, but I feel that if it had more explanations, through the movie it would have been more successful to the critics and majority of movie-goers (that aren't Warcfraf fans already) alike, if it was more like someone telling a great tale about the past or something like that. The subtle format of the movie works more for a tv series ( which sadly would be impossible due to the high cost CGI) than a movie, people would have more time to understand and relate to the characters and story. I personally loved the movie though, hopefully they will make a continuation and I will get to see Arthas and Illidan on the big screen one day.
I wouldn't agree with that. Mad Max: Fury Road only had minimal explanation of the world as well (poisoned soil, guns, water and oil only ressources left) and still did amazing. I think Warcraft's issues were more the lack of focus in regards to story and the weak human characters
I'm sorry but both your exemples are not comparable with Warcraft. Mad Max is mostly praised for it's action, it's story is too simple and didn't really an explanation on the world since it was a soft reboot.
Lord of the Rings had it's fair share of explanation, imagine if it had started without telling the story behind the rings and showing Sauron for exemple, not to say that most characters are introduced very well. So I think it's a mistake, even from the director's part to compare to LoTR.
***** That's what I call "spoonfeeding", that's what attracts more people. What Warcraft did was appeal only to the game fans, people who knows the lore and characters, if you did you probably would like the movie, if you don't I can see you not caring for the characters and story at all. That's why I think that if they did explain the setting and lore in a more obvious and clear manner it could have gone a completely different way.
Lord of the Ring have an hour long exposition even without the extend it is still a lot which this film extremely lack. I remember my friend just give up on watching Lotr (an idiot) because to him it was too long of an exposition. However those exposition was so much worth it if some thing ever happened like let just said Gandalf death (in the first movie not the second) and Boromir last stand.
What Warcraft did was, hey here a fucking spoon chew it or dies.
People have to have every little detail spelled out these days.
Thank you for doing justice to this movie. My dream is to see Arthas become a movie so I can die in peace
If they can get up to warcraft III I'll be happy, I just wanna see Arthas put on the helm and become the Lich King, also Illidan, that would be fucking amazing
tbh, the slow change of Arthas's personality as he gradually becomes the pawn of the Lich King and falters away from the light with his more and more questionable decisions until the pinnacle being the culling of stratholme, where he fully succumbs to his lust of vengence would be AMAZING cinema!
Even Resident Evil Got 6 Movies (which some of them cool "Action" movies) I'm pretty sure Warcraft will go for a loong journey into the cinema World...I Want just two Warcraft Storylines to make a movie one of them is Arthas (Rise-Fall) Another one is The Coming Of Old Gods...Old gods and their war was pretty cool according to the book
Same... I've been DYING to see Arthas put on his lich king helmet on the big screen!
Of course, Cinema Sins would just complain about how Uther and Arthas's story arc were stolen from Obi Wan Kenobi and Anakin, just like how Warcraft stole orcs from LOTR and Garona was stolen from Gamora from Guardians of the Galaxy... -_- Because any reason to hate Warcraft, right? It's like he's got a personal vendetta against this universe XD
Don't forget Illidan and Grom bro. They are true wc heroes!
Never played warcraft, never knew it was a thing and I like the movie. I just watched it yesterday. Wished I did sooner.
I'm so freaking sad that we'll never get a sequel :(
Everything great about Eragon please.
I think that is a challenge worth your attention xD
uuuuugghhhh
I'm still so bitter about Eragon, why you gotta twist the knife XD
What was so terrible besides the protagonist? At least it had Jeremy Irons in a medieval setting. It fit him perfectly.
Medivh's Golem, not Medivh's Gollum.
I think Mister Frodo would have had a problem if Gollum was that big.
Also I think you meant to say "total immersion" and not "total emersion"?
I never saw this movie because of past video game adaptations, but I did want to see it. Those locations brought back some WOW memories! It's also great that there were unknown actors, gives them a chance to step up their game and not be overshadowed by big names.
I loved the movie, and as a decade long Troll player seeing how huge and awesome the orcs were i was soooo looking forward to the trolls and tauren, so bummed.
Ovegrow120 same.
I agree, my only problem is how fast it's pace was on the first half, but even then I never felt confused nor do I lost interest. Plus, it is currently the best Video Game to movie adaptation I've seen, so while it isn't perfect, you do have to give credit to the creators whom tried to please two extreme sides or movie goers, and even managed to partially succeed. So yeah, nice movie that was hated a little too harshly.
I'm so disappointed.....
12:58 that was clearly a double kill so why only 1 win?
Thank you for making this video! People need to stop criticising stuff and actually appreciating the AMAZING work that went into this, just like any other film! Love it!
MISSION: to tell, in an absurdly brief time, a portion of a complex fantasy story, including as many of the most essential and popular characters as possible, being as truthful to the visuals (so well known to the fans) of this world, while remaining keenly aware that your audience will include (hopefully) newcomers to the entire experience, who you must entertain, as well as long time visitors of this world (virtual residents, really) who you must enthrall; to employ the best artists available, both performers and technicians, for this adventure and to do all this within not an unlimited production budget of both time and money. MISSION: ACCOMPLISHED Watching Warcraft feels like going home. Bravo, Mr. Jones and your entire team. So many of us long for more.
>3d settlers of catan
i thought it was heroscape lmao
i miss that game
I loved the movie so much. And i'm a wow player too, so everything was all the more thrilling for me XD
I like how you mentioned the next thing that happens in game continuity while showing stormwind but not directly stating it. Nice shot
Not playing/knowing the game I still loved this game. It was wonderful :3
It wasn’t like... LOTR but it doesn’t need to be? It’s a wonderfully magical world with interesting characters and story. I loved it!
And the MUSIC!!
OOOoooooh you don't even know the half of it:D If you think it's magical enough just wait and if you think THOSE characters are interesting....just wait untill you hear about Thrall, Jaina, Rexxar, Sylvannas, Tirion, Magni and Muradin Bronzebeard, FREAKING Illidan and of course *Arthas*
Unless you have already, you should do Treasure Planet
I feel like they had a rough time with this one.
As someone who knows a thing or two about the lore of Warcraft:
If you wanted to explain every race, clan you'd need like 2 movies before this one. And they would be boring as hell to just show you who's who, where are they from, why do they act like they do. At least I think it would not be to easy to make those movies really interesting while giving you tons and tons of information.
This movie honestly was made for fans. To know the orcs you would have needed to at least play WoW in Warlords of Draenor. The humans? Harder, most of them don't show up to much in WoW.
But then again: if you know a bit about the wars, and know the Orc Clans, you understand this movie just fine I think.
But still, if you just look at the movie: the plot isn't to complicated, so this part should be ok even if you don't know to much. You'd not know some of the Orcs from the look, but I don't think thats to important. So for a movie about a video game? I think its still good. Not great, it certainly has issues, but it looks great, CGI and voice acting is pretty good I'd say, and you have calmer moments for character developement but also battles and action, I think the balance isn't to bad as well.
Could it have been better? Sure. But some issues are hard to fix since the universe is rather big. But to be honest: it could have been WAY worse. So I think they did a good enough job, there was certainly effort put into the movie. As a fan of the games and the lore? I'd hope to get a sequel, there is SO much to tell after this movie... Rise of Thrall, Arthas and the Scourge... granted, parts of those movies would be really depressing but then again: not every game movie has to be light hearted, fun right?
i’m not gonna lie, i knew nothing about wow going into this movie but i extremely enjoyed it for just the story it was telling, i will say i didn’t see some of the deaths coming, but i loved the movie so much that i ended up looking a bit more into wow itself, and whenever i get paid again (been out of work for a while due to everything pandemic wise) i plan on buying a subscription to play it.
if this wasn’t made i dunno if i would’ve ended up ever finding out about wow, a lot of my friends don’t play games like this and hadn’t even heard about the movie when i asked them about it and i have this movie to thank for that.
it honestly introduced me to a game i’m extremely excited to jump into as soon as possible.
did i know everything i needed jumping in, probably not, was i taking in the info they told, yeah, but as somebody who enjoys fantasy movies in general and found the movie randomly in a Walmart for dirt cheap last year i think it was honestly pretty amazing.
it made me a bit sad to hear that it might not get a sequel too since it seems like the story was just getting started.
I'm like 3 years late to this video but I remember watching this in theaters on the weekend it came out and sitting on the edge of my seat with glee and joy. God I love this movie and I don't care what people have to say about it. I really enjoyed it.
This is by far the best Game adaptation ever, only true warcraft players know that and true warcraft players loved this movie. The credits with the login theme OMG i was so hyped when I watched this. I really want a sequel.
Was that typo just to be cute? Or, was it purely accidental?
Cute. If screen junkies can call Garona, Gamora, can't I have some fun too? Apparently not. :) I spelled it right for harvest golem.
But you didn't spelled it right in the other golem
geez, let him have fun jesus
Ardashes Najarian
for a moment I read, let him have fun With jesus.
I lol'd.
11:12 honesty
*ding*
The intro showing frostmourne gave me the most intense chills since first seeing the Lich King in wrath back in 2008.
watched first time back in the days and i didn't even know it was made with the game in mind, it was very enjoyable, and indeed THAT WAS TEARFUL.
The action scenes were amazing, but I'm kinda upset they made footmen such useless red shirts. They stand literally no chance at all in a fight against orcs in this movie, and part of it is because they went with WoW interpretation of orcs - basically Hulk - but not with humans, who look like muscle mutants as well. Back in RTS games they were certainly strong and muscular, but not inhumanly so - an army of Conan the Barbarians, versus the equivalent of LotR Gondorians.
Well, after Warcraft II, a footman couldn't beat a grunt in one-on-one combat. They needed backup and support units in order to have a fighting chance.
True that, but it's not like they were useless against them. 3 footmen were about equal to 2 grunts, and here it's like they're made of tissue paper
It's also the first time in universe the humans have ever seen the orcs. They likely never had to fight anything bigger than themselves, and the tactics they use against other smaller races wouldn't work on orcs. I mean sure you can get lucky, but without learning how to fight something as savage and huge as an orc, they're not going to do very well.
Tomek Zylka Have you read the books? The orcs initially tore the humans apart until they had backup. The demonic horde was nothing to be fucked with.
During Lothar's first fight, you can already see him adapting to the new enemy - they were completely unprepared, and the Orcs were very stealthy (indeed, even that fight would probably be another stealthy victory, if not for Medivh). As he progresses through the movie, he gets better at this, until finally he's just tearing through them. Presumably, he revised the Footmen training with his experience from the field - don't try to be _stronger_ than the enemy (that worked on all the other peoples in the region, but not Orcs); be faster, more agile, smarter.
The movie didn't trash on lore, After seeing the movie I thought that but then I replayed the first Warcraft game, and all that happens there is in the movie, exeption being the fel and the origin of thrall (he wasn't resurrected by fel), all that being in the expanded lore after the first game, so minor things.
that "leveling up" part killed me..
As someone who wasn’t really into WoW as a kid, I did start to take an interest after this movie.
It's fun to see the Preacher and his girlfriend as the king and queen in this movie if you know what i mean
Onion bro???
Oh yeah! I watched Preacher after seeing this film and I hadn't picked up on that xD

It was a beautiful film, even those in my family who know.. nothing of warcraft or the lore enjoyed it. the action was well-made, the cgi for both the orcs as well as lothar's gryphon and the small little nods to the games were both realistic and stood apart from the others aspects of the movie. The Lore and storyline itself was actually fairly spot on, sure they shifted garona's relationship with lothar a bit because of the ret-con to her son, and the ending wasn't the mind-controlled crazy uber-garona some might have expected, but it was well done, and was set up for another movie. All-in-all, as someone who has read lore from the very first Warcraft to the current expansion of WoW, I'm happy with this movie. It gives me the nostalgia I wanted without it crushing me, it delivers beautiful world-building and brought to life my FAVOURITE city (ironforge) and it builds up the characters. It introduces Varian very well and makes sure that it is clear where this is all going. It does. The Job! Hell it does it really well! Visually beautiful and story-wise, at least to me and a few others I've talked to, pretty darn spot on. Of course there are going to be differences, with parts of the official lore being ret-conned, or even just being hard to explain in visual form, such as the real reason for Garona killing our lovely gold-clad king, and garona's relationship with The guardian, they did well to change those around into something a bit easier to digest.
What seems to be a common thing Warcraft fans don't quite realize is, yes, this is 20 years of lore they're trying to put into a possible series of movies, but the timeline is scewed. The Warcraft team has changed lore to fit WoW, ret-conned things such as Garona's guardian son, changed relationships, killed off people who were originally alive at some period, messed around with the original guardian storyline for Medivh, all of these things can't be fit together because, and I HATE to say this, but some of it makes no sense anymore. Having Garona with Medivh no longer makes sense. having Garona kill Llane the way she did in the movie was a better ending than the long, convoluted mind-control idea originally introduced in lore.
As a fan of Warcraft since Orcs Vs Humans, this might not of been a masterpiece... but was a good entertaining movie that represented the Warcraft world better than I expected.
Here's how I view this movie. Revenant won best picture last year. Mad Max won multiple awards for technical feats. This movie shows the natural shots that made Revenant great as well as the technical mastery of Mad Max. While this movie isn't inherently likeable, it's not boring or dull either. It doesn't quite reach the peaks of Lord of the Rings in epic battles. The movie is overall visually stunning though. They have great costume designs, cgi monsters, and world building.
This movie isn't for everyone for sure. I'm just surprised the critics haven't sung the praises of this movie. It should be critically good besides being overwhelming in lore. The only reason this wasn't the highest rated movie of the year by critics is Hollywood politics. It's the reason movies like Marvel or Pixar movies aren't nominated for best picture. Critics don't personally understand the movie and aren't told they're supposed to like the movie.
To clarify something, my current personal favorite pick of this year is likely Zootopia. The political commentary, buddy cop, comedy is too strong to ignore. It's not my favorite overall, but likely the biggest piece of art.
actually the critics outside of the US weren't that bad. The problem is that the US tends to follow the critics too much and most of the critics were going in knowing they would hate it regardless because they hate all video game movies no matter what (hell some of the critics even wrote their review without watching the movie they just read a negative review and paraphrased it)
Revan Ruler The problem with reviews is that likely 20% of the biggest reviewers are completely out of touch with the market. They like things that have complex themes that they infer to be true. One look at something like Revenant could have it as a beautiful journey. On the other hand, the Revenant shows on the surface a guy very slowly trying to get revenge and just barely surviving at any given time. Just very little desire for the market to see the movie, but they thought it was the best of the year.
Everything GREAT About John Carter, please.
I love that you know some lore going into this!
I love that you counter Cinema Sins, because sometimes they sin stuff that they don't understand even though the event were explained earlier in the film. PROVING they don't watch their movies as closely as they should. Liked and Subbed!
