About This Episode:
A wedding to remember . . .
Professor Mburumba Kerina, the man who was instrumental in naming Namibia, was married to Naomi (Kikii) Zauana on the weekend in a memorable 3-day traditional Herero wedding.
The rich rituals of the Herero - centered on cattle, took place over Friday and Saturday, joining the two family groups according to age-old customs. The ceremony included traditional singing by women dressed for the joyous occasion in flamboyant traditional dress and culminated in the merging of the families, celebrated on a Saturday night with a performance by well-known Namibian musician, Big Ben. Lively music drifted through the camelthorn trees and long grass of the Omaheke until the early hours.
For Prof Kerina, who spent most of his life in exile petitioning at the UN for an independent country, the wedding was one of the most important weekends of his life, bringing him back to his roots.
It was well-attended by guests from a variety of ethnic groups, a testament to the family’s fascinating history of marrying into virtually every cultural group in the country. (His mother was Herero, his father Owambo and his family’s veins also flow with English, German, Damara and Nama blood.) The integrated guest complement was entirely appropriate for the man who unified the country by suggesting the name of the ancient Namib Desert that evolved into ‘Namibia’, the name that has identified and inspired a nation.
The festivities concluded on Sunday morning when the bride was finally able to leave her father’s homestead to accompany her new husband.
Congratulations Prof and Kikii. We wish you abundant health and happiness.
