  • Come all you good workers
    Good news to you I'll tell
    Of how the good old union
    Has come in here to dwell
    Which side are you on boys?
    Which side are you on?
    Which side are you on boys?
    Which side are you on?
    They say in Harlan County
    There are no neutrals there
    You'll either be a union man
    Or a thug for J. H. Claire
    Which side are you on boys?
    Which side are you on?
    Which side are you on boys?
    Which side are you on?
    Oh workers can you stand it?
    Oh tell me how you can
    Will you be a lousy scab
    Or will you be a man?
    Which side are you on boys?
    Which side are you on?
    Which side are you on boys?
    Which side are you on?
    Don't scab for the bosses
    Don't listen to their lies
    Poor folks ain't got a chance
    Unless they organize
    Tell me, which side are you on boys?
    Which side are you on?
    Which side are you on boys?
    Which side are you on?

      Exactly. That means new and independent unions need to be formed by workers and go back to the way unions used to be.

    I'll tell you which side I'm on, I'm on the workers side. I'll stand by the Union til the day I die. I've never scabbed or crossed another workers picket line. By God, I know which side I'm on. Organize. One Big Union.

    Weird how he talks about unity and harmony between people then sings a
    song about being divided.
    Not that I'm knocking the song or the
    position, but it's evidence that a world without conflict is impossible
    so long as there is evil in the world and people to stand fast against it.

    • @alsmith2431
      @alsmith2431 Před 4 lety +81

      It is not about being divided as much as it is workers and common people standing unified against those who want to control and exploit them. The only division is between the masses and the owner class.

    • @freelance_commie
      @freelance_commie Před 4 lety +13

      Unity and harmony naturally exists between people and communities. The people that profit off of our collective despair have done all they can to divide us as individuals. So to communicate to fellow class comrades how clear the sides are and that being passive is essentially agreeing with the demagogues. I think if the unity of the people and working class eventually has all the power democratically then the evils committed by the lords will cease to exist because they will not be given the means to become billionaires and lords. Solidarity comrade!

    • @alnicospeaker
      @alnicospeaker Před 4 lety +10

      An interesting point, but it's not mutually exclusive - you can be both united and against a common enemy.

    • @kspfan001
      @kspfan001 Před 4 lety +7

      It's not saying that at all. It's pointing out the fact that conflict is inevitable within our current political-economic system, where production is organized by capitalists for profits, which then must exploit labor. That doesn't mean we could construct a political economy that doesn't rely on exploitation as a core feature and instead organize production collectively & democratically to meet the needs of all so humanity can focus on other things. Basically: Communism.
      See: Star Trek: The Next Generation for an example of a communist society.
      It's not impossible, but it is very hard because of how Capitalist Realism has convinced so many people that there is no other way. As long as we still have a Capitalist system, we will always be in conflict with each other. But, don't be fooled into thinking a human-created political-economy is the same thing as human nature. People once thought the Divine Right of Kings was an unshakable natural law too.
      If you think this whole system sucks and that we can do better, welcome aboard, comrade. Go read some Marx and check out Zero Books youtube channel for more lefty reading.

    • @ProfesserLuigi
      @ProfesserLuigi Před 4 lety +2

      @@kspfan001 Twubbles 29 I think any system open to exploitation will be exploited. It's man's nature. Governments and economic systems are necessary because this is the case, otherwise we could all live free as birds on homesteads (and I would like that very much).
      Capitalism, though crude and flawed as you see, puts that conflict at the fore and allows for regulation of that nature. Sure, it does not always happen, but think about where we are today. We have unions because people fought against and raised awareness about the injustices of the big companies, and so, eventually, deals were struck and federal regulations were implemented making the world we live in a better place for workers than it was in Pete's day and before. Who do you fight when it's only the government telling you to work?
      We cant just put in a new communist or socialist system and expect there wont be lazies, liars, and power grabbers looking to get as much as they can regardless of what the government says. It only takes a handful to spoil the batch, as we saw with USSR and the PRC and every other attempt at communism. Sure, you may say they werr not formed under ideal conditions, but government reform on that radical a scale can not be done under ideal conditions. Frankly, I dont think they exist.
      Basically, what I'm saying is that the evil people who make capitalism bad will absolutely decimate communism. It's a matter of exposing and fighting evil that matters. That, not politics or economics, is why conflict will always exist.
