  • Hey Guys,
    Today I tear down a Holden 308 I've had sitting around for 10+ years. It blew up when I was driving it and I wanted to see if it was salvageable and whether it'd put a piston through the bore.

    It’s remarkable that it still ran until you got to work!

    All the old Holden v8's are strong engines I remember back in the day in the 90's slightly newer HEC5000i's before the end of production before the LS I have seen Taxis on LPG do over 1000,000kms unopened engines quite impressive back in those days if they are looked after they will go forever. I miss working on them less common these days and everyone has Turbo mania atm blueprint one of these and depending how much money you want to throw at it you can create a very worthy N/A monster cheers

      Hey Wayne, completely agree mate. They are a great engine. I’ve even got a secret love of 253’s. When built right they can rev all day, give respectable power and sound awesome doing it haha. Thanks for watching mate 👍

    That's amazing one you paid 1000 bucks for a car with a 308 and it still got you to work broken. I had the worst knocking sound I've ever heard in my Vp 304. I drove it for 3 more days until finally having time to find out it was a dirty pick up. I was impressed the toughness of the mighty Iron lion that day. but your story takes the cake.

      Ha, yeah mate. Thought for sure it’d chuck the rod out the block before I got to work haha.

    Niiiiice one
    Dodged a bullet - would be a pain to keep it for 10 years only to find the block is a throw away job…..
    I reckon she was previously overheated - the ring gaps close up to zero keep expanding then buckle which cracks the ring landing and under load the crack made it’s way down the skirt and a chunk came off……
    You may be able to tell based on how crispy the rubber seals were…..

      Sorry mate, just saw your comment. Yeah would have been a shame. Will see how bad she is at rebuild time 👍👍

    Common problem on 308's with high km's on them, happened to me, the taping noise on my engine was the valve pushing the piston top down as the top separated from the rod and pin

      Ha, geez. Makes sense. did you save it or too much damage?
      I was surprised this didn’t explode but unless I’ve missed some cracks she should live to power another old girl. Thanks for watching 👍

    Hi fantastic video just one question i have a Hz holden brought it 6 months back it has a 308 motor out of a VB commodore or later it idles ok but under load, going through gears it surges any ideas what to look for, someone said replace plugs with NGK and get good spark plug leads, and check coil to see if its getting 12 volts, any other suggestions thank you

      @TheShedSesh  Před 3 lety +1

      Hey mate. That’s a bit of a weird one. I’ve never had an issue with plugs. Sounds like it could be carby or less so maybe an inlet manifold leak.
      Definitely make sure you’re getting the 12v at the coil. If you have an electronic ignition and not points it’s better to wire in a relay to the coil. Use the yellow resistor wire as the trigger. But wouldn’t have thought that would make it surge. More so bog down with weak spark.
