This guy....Mr. Gary Willis has been my absolute, definitive idol of the bass playing world since I was a child. My god! Him and Jaco...I'm in heaven.
His playing is so smooth, like a cheese cake :)
Combination of fretless bass and upright bass... Superb!
Gary Willis, always a treat.
As someone who listens to mostly heavy metal music, I must say that jazz as a genre is an important one to study and play for any musician looking to improve their technical capabilities as a musician. There's so much precision and comprehension of musical theory that applies to jazz that makes it such a technical genre, hopefully one I will learn soon.
Amen! I am into a ton of Dream Theater, Megadeth, Messhuggah, Animals as Leaders, Freak Kitchen but the other genre that I listen to heavily is jazz for the very reasons you pointed above. Tribal Tech is one my favorite bands therein.
I've been an "alternative" rock guy most of my life, and jazz bass "Creeps" into the sound of bands like Radiohead. One of my favorite bass players is Jah Wobble, of Public Image Limited. His solo work is what really led me to stuff like this.
how about classical ?
omg this is incredible, not to mention the guy has some of the best right hand technique out there
Agreed. I have been studying his technique for the last 5 and I learn something new every time I watch. I think he's maximized efficiency for both RH and LH and why he can play so fast when he wants to but still be accurate. I caught him at bass bash after namm show a few years ago and he was BURNING - dropped jaws including mine because I don't see him play that fast anymore.
Simply unbeatable.
One of my bass heroes!
Numero uno!!
Lovely stuff!
Some smooth bass playing. I like it :D
Stellar!
The master ...
Splendid!
Alone Together!
Dang. GW is the man!
Alone Together. Great Jazz standard. The upright part is a blast to play too.
Amazing.
So much to learn from GW :-)
Just great.
Gary rules! E.O.D. :)
yes...so good
This guy...and Freakin Cliff Burton and Buckethead my favorite LowEnd Thumpas BAR NONE rock and metal gods right...love Bruce Willis.
It’s GARY Willis 😉
Hermoso sonido
So good
Every time I seen Tribal Tech this guy stole the show. Remarkable Musician!
Cool!
holy crap! ! I!
The bridge setting of the B-string is different from the other four. Does he have a lower action on that string?
Can anyone tell in simple curiosity; what are the three "knobs" to the G-string side of his ramp for?? What might they do??
Midi controller
Gary willis is so profshnal
7 people can devote their lives to eat dirt
what are the three pins on the underside of the ramp for?
ommepul They control his Roland GK3B pickup, he hacked his apart and fit it into his bass so that it's out of the way.
Do you know if Gary Willis is running his bass passive or active here?
Hi. I think his Ibanez is passive...that single pickup is not working in tandem with an onboard preamp... I definitely could be wrong though.
@@billylikitsakosmusic6367 his bass is 100% active with no passive switch. It's a bart 2 band preamp if I remember correctly.
dear music lovers,
I bought an Ibanez GWB-1 from 2002 and I think they have always had roundwound strings with some normal damage on the fingerboard B & E side from the roundwound strings.
what thickness of strings is best for this neck? suggestions for flatwound or taperwound which sounds just as good as roundwound strings?
sorry for my English
Kind regards
Fred
Gary uses D'Addario EXL 165-5 strings. 135 to 45 thickness. Don't worry about wear on the fingerboard if you want that roundwound sound. Maybe in 10 years or so you need to have the fingerboard sanded, but that's it.
Must listen to Reality Check right now!
can anyone tell me what the chord progression for this is? i don't have an ear for that stuff .. yet. i'd love to try to play along to the same song.
tony becerra It is the Jazz Standard Alone Together
W.O.W.
25 Metallica fans still don't get it !
Uhm, do you know who Cliff Burton is? He was Metallicas bassist for the first 3 albums until he died at 24, a big influence of his was jazz, that being said buy thd age of 21 he could play circles around this man, no disrespect intended. If you would like to get familiar with some of his bass mastery I would recommend you give a listen to "Orion", especially an isolated bass track of it. "Anesthesia (Pulling teeth)" or the live version of "For Whom the Bells Toll". Have an open mind and always distinguish tonality and technique brother.
luvbeans405 It's evident that you wouldn't know music if it came up and bit you in the ass.
Tonally, technically but above all musically speaking, Gary Willis shits all over Cliff Burton.
luvbeans405 Man, way to let everyone know you know shit about music.
"Cliff Burton at age 21 could play circles around Gary Willis"
Really, have you even heard about Tribal Tech? Gary Willis is not just a good bass player, he is the guy bass masters look up to right now. I have Cliff on high consideration for putting the bass in the front on metal, creating some good lines and stuff like that, but that's all. When you talk about Gary Willis level, there is only like ten bass players in history that got where he is musically talking, like Michael Manring or Anthony Jackson. Cliff is a kid comparing to people like that and that is not something to be embarassed of as, almost everyone in history is too.
+luvbeans405 cmon dude... I was playing the garbage Cliff was playing after only playing for 2 years, been playing for 10 yrs and can't come close to touching what Gary Willis is doing with the instrument. Not to mention the man is an amazing composer too.
João MenegaleBarbi super lol Gary Its a control and pasion
What you taking about Willis?
i got this search result from typing in wizard and this is not what i expected. does he do any magic?
It's simply a backing track. "Upright bass track" is a bit of an overstatement - upright players might feel offended :) Other than that - GW is a class by himself.
Maciek Szczyciński upright players a tough guys, I'm sure they can take it ;)
BassTheWorld.com He is playing over ''Alone Together''.. a jazz standard. its not a random upright bass track.
In the more recent videos I've seen, Gary's seem to have lost a lot of weight. Is this the result of workouts and better diet by Gary? I know that he's an avid mountain bike enthusiast from some of the things that I've read.
what is the name of this tune?
Alone together
Dexter Gordon of the Bass
i miss playing fretless...
kodiak wild There are some really good cheap ones out there. I had a Squier that was actually fantastic.
Interesting solo over minor 7b5 and altered dominant chords without emphasizing the color tones. Musical approach.
Conneseure
a bassist backed by an upright bass :)
I might be crazy, but I think that's not Gary's personal bass. The set-up at the bridge is different to what I've generally seen in live videos, and I figure that his control-equipped ramp could be carried with him while travelling.
It's his bass, I guess he owns a bunch of those
BassTheWorld.com Yea fair enough. As he said in the first product demo video for it, "I might have to keep this one...."
+Alex Khouri I think it would have to be his personal bass as the ramp has to be wired through the bass plus the midi pickup is trimmed down
+Alistair Rhodes Yea, for that reason alone I reckon it is his.
+Mensch Meier Yes, I know that, but I'm talking about whether or not he actually OWNS it (as oppose to picking it up from a guitar store on the way to clinic/gig, which many signature instrument artists do).
I love gary songwriting. but I prefer jimmy johnsons playing. both amazing in their own write.
Johnson and Fierabracci are two of the most underrated bassists of all time.
Benny golson references?
Didn't know stan lee played bass
Plays bass. Wears Vic Firth shirt.
I see no problem here
Thats all the drums he needs for this piece... Nuthin but the Bass!
What's that black sausage between the pickup and the bridge (more towards the bridge), some sort of string muting device?
It's a midi pickup.
Alone together?
Hmm, this is really strange. Although I'm a huge Gary Willis fan, this really didn't feel like him. Don't get me wrong, it had a nice flow and everything, it just felt like someone else was playing, not in a good way. Nonetheless, it was nice to see Gary Willis in this channel.
+altrogeruvah I'm really curious. Why you felt that way?
+altrogeruvah I agree. Nothing here seems to resolve in a pleasant way. It does get better later, maybe that was the point.
Tsk, with a ramp like that i can (almost) do that too.
DuxJerome Yeah its all in the gear ,,,,,,,,,NOT
I cant take that metronome clicking ,screws up a otherwise nice performance.
ULTRA CHIANT !
Et cette casquette, tu dors avec ?
Alone Together!
