Rush has got to be one of the best bands ever, probably the best, and this is one of their best songs... And a great recording of it... I think its just fantastic!! :)
While it's impossible to identify Alex's best guitar solo, this "Kid Gloves" solo is one of those WTF did I just hear ? WTF did Alex just do ? moments. I've never seen or, until now, heard a live version of this song. This live version does not disappoint. Thanks for posting this gem.

I saw them play this for the first time ever at Radio City Music Hall NYC, it was the warm up short tour they do before going into the studio. They also did Distant Early Warning and Red Sector A and spread most of the album out along the 5 nights they were there. What a show that was.
Rush will always have a very warm and dear spot in my heart. They were the whole reason for me to start taking music lessons and to become a professional musician. This album was monumental. The day it came out was also the day I was able to buy tickets for my first Rush concert at the Los Angeles Forum. Seems like yesterday! Can't believe it's been 35 years
Chris Dominguez I was at that show! Fantastik Rush concert. I remember during Neils solo the laser the went in a circle super fast around his drum kit! That was 1984
Geddy had said in one of the many rockline interviews they did that they had such high hopes for this album but it kinda fell flat with people. Theres plenty of rush fans that love GUP but i think rush expected it to have more commercial success than it did.
I've always loved the Grace Under Pressure album, but felt that the drum mix on the album did Neil's playing no justice. But the live recordings of Grace material from that era smoke the studio versions...like this one! Thanx for posting. If only they had included this song on the Grace Under Pressure Tour '84 video!!!
I was in the same seat in 2nd Row Center Floor for three straight nights in Toronto for this tour. They shot the Grace Under Pressure concert video all around us and needless to say it was totally unbelievable how great these guys were live every single night. The greatest band and live band of all time.
My favorite Rush album. The Who Yes Rush Greatest bands and most certainly greatest Live bands. I’m so glad I wasn’t born in any other time. Unmatched excitement ! Hallelujah

What did you just write. Alex hasn't sounded like anyone, EVER. He is by far the most underrated guitar player today. His sound has always progressed with the music of that time. I would assume by the user name you like Rush, but to make that comment seems to me very uneducated on everything RUSH. Just sayin.

I completely agree with you. My favorite guitar sound of his is the 80's, but the thing about a progressive band like Rush is that they keep progressing. If they do one thing for too long, it gets stale or old. Rush moves with the trends, but make it original at the same time.

Has anyone here played live? This was before in-ear monitors giving them the tempos. You get hyper and musicians generally always play faster live (it's not done consciously, it just happens). Usually 15-20% faster actually
True, but in-ears don't "give them the tempos" per se. They give each musician a custom mix of what that person needs to hear in order to perform the song. There are only a handful of tunes in their entire catalog where Neil plays to a click live. And even then, Geddy & Alex don't have the click in their ears. Even on songs with tons of keyboard samples, Neil just has the experience and practice to know what tempo to play. When one of them triggers a sample that has a tempo, Neil hears it and adjusts if he needs to (he's said as much in multiple interviews). It's only those songs where there's tons of sequencing (The Weapon, Red Sector A) or a video element that requires sync (Roll The Bones skeleton rap, Time Stand Still with Aimee Mann in video) that Neil plays to a click. In the older concert films, you can tell which ones because he wears a giant pair of headphones. Not flaming, just clarifying :)
Really cool thanks for clarifying. I had no clear idea how in-ears worked. I'm a drummer myself who relies on stage monitors and it can be tricky to hear everyone and get my levels right. Yeah Neil is an impressive guy
Part of it here is that the tape playback is fast. I can tell that they're not on 440 here, so I'm sure that's partly tape. But yes, Rush did often speed up live, especially in the 70s
He's not off. The riff is in 5/8 time so the rhythm sounds uneven. 1-2-3-4-5, 1-2-3-4-5. With the emphasis (*snare) on 1-*-3-*-*, 1-*-3-4-* "A world of indifference" Then 4/4 time comes in at the line "Call it blind frustration. Also, Alex's delay was set to a fast tempo...when you play notes between the delay like he does, you're stuck with the tempo otherwise the effect doesn't work right. Either they planned it that way, or they were stuck with an unintentionally fast tempo.
That's all 100% correct except the time signature, which is 5/4, but honestly that only impacts how it's notated. It's just easier to notate it in 5/4 than it would be in 5/8. You could do it in 5/8 and play it at half the tempo and it'd be the same song but that notation would just be more complicated.
I love the speed of the song live, much faster than the official release cd. And Neil's is killing it with his punchy snare drum. In the Signals tour RUSH also superfast tempo.

For whatever reason, Kid Gloves just didn't survive long term like Distant Early Warning did. And you also have the fact that Subdivisions, from the same era, aged incredibly well and remained a fan and band favorite forever. With just 3 hour shows, lol, and what, 173 original songs to choose from?, well some can't make the final set list....... I often wished that Rush would have done a tour where they'd have simply skipped ALL the standards = no Tom Sawyer, no TSOR, no Limelight...none of that, and just do an entire show of the "less loved" yet still awesome songs. Sadly, that never did nor never will happen now.

@fendergibs PLaying Moving Pictures in full in order was a great idea and was amazing live. Hearing The Camera Eye in person on opening night and other shows was better than those you listed. Not that hearing those would have been ok. Considering they were not exactly on promo tour for the new album. BU2B sounds great as studio but it was was great live. Clockwork Angels will be another great work. I have not seen Kid Gloves live, but seen the others. Camera Eye stole the show.
@fendergibs Snakes and Arrows is a fantastic work. If Clockwork Angels follows Caravan and BU2B singles with this epic production it could be greater yet. As for using the term "flops' better check out some of the most successful tours in recent years and dont forget they are still in the top four for most consecutive gold albums. NOt only do they produce the quality studio album, they come out and do what they do live. Attendance also speaks for itself.
@fendergibs The Camera Eye was played all last year during the playing of the entire Moving Pictures album in sequence. I only made 3 shows last year. To say it hasn't been played live in 15 years is inaccurate. They played it live all over the country last year and Europe and South America. You missed out I guess. They are touring again this spring with 13 shows then Europe and back into the US. Opening night in Florida on March 30. Seen 48 shows myself since 1982. Watch Camera EYE on YT.
Hey Fendergibs - Go see the Time Machine Tour. 3 hour show including the entire Moving Pictures album, plus some wayback songs from every album in the catalog including, yes some of the newer stuff. You show open your mind and give the new stuff a few more listens, they are still making great music after 40 years.
@younggotribe yes I did at Mohegan Sun. The MP part was the best 35 min or so I have ever seen in concert, it flowed so well and the crowd was electrified. The Camera eye, a song I never thought they would play live again was probe the best song by any band that I have seen live. Since 1990 they put out some ok material, since 2000 it been unlistenable, except for a few tracks off S&A. my main point is why play filler when u have 1st rate stuff to play from 77-87. play what 90% to hear .

Why isn't there a concert video of this song? I always loved this song despite it being long forgotten by many except for hardcore Rush fans.

Kid Gloves sounds so incredibly difficult that I can’t imagine trying to play it. I’m no musician but this doesn’t sound easy with that odd meter.
