People are talking about how this sounds like a hidden track in Signals, but it sounds more like a mix of Grace Under Pressure and Power Windows to me.
We were getting a little bored with inactivity. During the mixing of "Exit... Stage Left" there was really not much for us to do except say "it sounds good" or "it doesn't sound good". I had been working down in the little studio, cleaning and renovating an old set of Hayman drums that were kicking around, and had started working on a "Jack Secret" song with Jack and Skip from the crew. Geddy and Alex soon joined in on keyboards and rhythm guitar, and we later recorded the song ("Tough Break") up in the studio. ... - Neil Peart This song is the bonus track by "the fab pros" on the bootleg Power Run.
This is cool. It's like discovering a hidden track from the Signals CD. The instruments, and their style of playing sound like a glimpse of that period for them. It almost reminds me of a Max Webster collaboration. Thanks for sharing!
As far as I can remember, the line-up for this song is: Jack Secret-vocals and bass Alex Lifeson & ??--guitars Geddy Lee--keyboards and backing vocals Neil Peart--drums
From Signals tourbook: "I had been working down in the little studio, cleaning and renovating an old set of Hayman drums that were kicking around, and had started working on a "Jack Secret" song with Jack and Skip from the crew. Geddy and Alex soon joined in on keyboards and rhythm guitar, and we later recorded the song ("Tough Break") up in the studio. "
cool video. Fun tune, especially the last 1/3rd when the tempo picks up and you can really sense Rush's DNA all over it, even if it was the roadie's song.
Don't kill the messenger, but being a RUSH fan, as I have for a few DECADES now, this just doesn't have the same kick of old. It's not bad, but it's not up to the level of greatness these guys are capable of... I still vote thumbs up but this song won't make my "rotation " or top song(s) list , I am afraid to say.
I don’t know if this is considered “ pop main stream” of 82’ . BUT if Neil had have done a “ pop” song , it would have been like this , so simple , but his style still rings through . R.I.P professor . ❤
Well 'Subdivisions' was birthed at the same time as this song (it's from that autumn 1981 period where they toured Europe playing Moving Pictures as well as road-testing 'Subdivisions'). It sounds like Alex is playing the black Strat' & Geddy with his Mini-Moog & Oberheim OBX or 8-voice!
Jack Secret is a nickname for Tony Geranios (i believe he was Rush's keyboard tech circa Power Windows) Skip Gildersleeve was with Rush's crew for many years. He held many positions over the years. I don't think this song has anything to do with Rush. They did play with Max Webster on the Universal Juveniles lp in 1980, but I'm not sure about this one. I could be wrong.
Mr. Geranios, er...Jack Secret has been nice enough to upload this and other tracks to his Myspace. Just promise not to laugh too hard at the fact he it's a Myspace.
If this is Rush, then it's Ged on Drums, Alex on Bass and Neil on guitar. I reckon this is more likely to be Rush's roadies having a crack at something....
As I understand it; Jack sang, Skip played bass while Ged and Alex played Keyboards and guitar. The drums you hear are played by Neil who was renovating a set that was lying around the studio.
though very power synth(80's rush or anything else) it's not Rush without Geddy's tea kettle voice.(mellowed in '80's it was) sounds like Parson's Project, and they are as good as APP!
Hey Ratchetfan2007, please include this in the description. I will explain more to these folks who are flaming about this tune. "I had been working down in the little studio, cleaning and renovating an old set of Hayman drums that were kicking around, and had started working on a "Jack Secret" song with Jack and Skip from the crew. Hey man this is pretty good. All these folks knocking this should appreciate this as a fan.It is just a jam session.Nothing serious.I think it would have made a good side project.
I wonder if anyone realizes that Rush did most of the instrumental stuff when they say "This sounds like crap!!", The only difference is that Geddy isn't the singer (nor perhaps the bassist?), but you can tell it's Geddy doing the background vocals at 2:00. So don't disrespect the music! The lyrics are indeed cheesy and the singer doesn't fit into what is basically an unreleased Rush track, but I believe that overall this is still a good song..
@Delgift This is all I know about this song Aprox 1980, it was just before Signals came out and was the first song they began to work on from the album, it would later become Subdivisions. As for the Singer don't know but Geddy wasn't there when this song was being worked on initially.
@tumcast 2/4/09 he added to information is what he means. This is Rush but it features Jack Secret as lyrics and synth. The song does not have Geddy Lee and was a short recording that was never published by the band. Parts of this later became subdivisions.
Now this is definitely a RASH song. They made a metaphorical BATTLESCAR on By-Tor as keyboard guru Tony G gave a GRAND FUNK RAILROAD/PAUL RODGERS performance. And man up - Peart would never write this kind of lyric.
@MqZane I never said it was the same, simply that it became... note simmilarities around 2:27 (to clarify, definatly not identical, but simmilarity is there) and a few of the cords used in this song are very simmilar to the ones in Subdivisions. Sorry that there are few to no reliable sources and I don't have a "Signals tour programme"
It's not really a "Rush Song" It's a Jack Secret song, Geddy and Alex helped out with keys and rhythm guitars. Neil played drums for all of Jack's/Tony's tracks.
I get that’s it’s not technically a Rush song, but does have Geddy, Alex AND Neil all playing. So to me it’s basically a Rush song. It sounds more like Rush than anything on Geddy’s or Alex’s solo albums if you ask me……..
I hate to correct the person who uploaded this video, but if you pause the video and look at Neil's bass drum, its from the Roll the Bones tour or rehearsal
It's really hard to sit and hear this guy sing, instead of Geddy. Still, the music is clearly rush. Listen from 2:55 through 3:21and tell me it's not Rush. Of course it is. Just like the Battlescar song they did with Max Webster's group. A true Rush nut like me still wants this in their collection.
Everyone should keep Jack Secret (a secret). This song sounds like crap! It starts out sounding like the police, and not a good sounding police, and ends up sounding like a cheesy bar band at 1:45 in the morning.
this sounds like right in the middle of signals and moving pictures they should of used the song but with geddy and not cheassy 80's lyrics and neils lyrics
Davie Henry nah, it’s rush, but it’s just one of the roadies on vocals and another on bass. Geddy’s on keyboards, Alex on Rhythm guitar, and Neil on an old kit that was laying around the studio. Just a little post-production jam they did
People are talking about how this sounds like a hidden track in Signals, but it sounds more like a mix of Grace Under Pressure and Power Windows to me.
What is cool about Tough Break is that even when the boys are merely dickin around the studio they STILL blow away everybody else! :-) I love this!

You can hear shades of the upcoming Signals and GuP here.
This singer proves that Geddy Lee is the best singer for Rush!
Really. Could you imagine? I've never thought of that before, but it is totally friggen true.

Definitely a Signals feel. Also reminds me of Vital Signs feel (which also has a Signals feel)
The Max Webster colab was done a year before this i believe
Love that Geddy synth at 2:26
I did the song all around. Idk why so many folks are knocking the singing. He’s got my approval! Actually, he almost sounds like Pat Travers.
You can hear the influence of the Po-Po...tha Police ! THat would be a mega tour of the ages. The two best power trios of all time
This is actually a great song lol.....the instrumental from 2:00 to 3:20 sounds really good and fits into this tune very well.
Kinda has a pink Floyd vibe(except the drums)
I met Jack Secret a few days ago. He's a really nice guy really :)

Alex Lifeson & ??--guitars
Geddy Lee--keyboards and backing vocals

This actually isn't bad! LOL! Unmistakable Rush guitar sound as well.

Alex Lifeson on tuba.
Tony Geranios on vocals? Not a bad singing voice.
