I know people don't like the shadowhunters movie that much, but it felt to me there was at least atmosphere of the books there. I like the "feel" of it. I wish the show would go into that (paranormal) direction, instead of aging them up and making the show look like csi: new york. If they wanted their own thing, why "adapt" the books at all.

I didnt particularly like the show but you are dead on about Alec's actor. He felt stiff and constipated every time he was on screen. His facial expression when talking to others looks like he is bored and condecending (is that how you spell it?). I was always furious when Clarie was on screen because all her choices were just so dumb...Simon, Magnus and Raphael were the highlights, although Magnus could tone it down with the historical references. They were the only ones emanating some positivity and progress. Everyone else just felt bland. Especially Jayce good god.

It doesn’t sound like you actually liked the show to me. At any point. It also sounds like you just don’t like Matt Daddario for some reason.
You do know it was Dom that said the slur and not Matt right? And Dom came into Matt’s livestream? But either way because they said something like that in a joking manner doesn’t make them bad people, the whole of them as a person matters. Matt and Dom are both sweethearts. And are human. They will make mistakes, say things you might not like or agree with. It’s not like he committed some actual unforgivable crime. But he did apologize and he’s not over all a bad guy. He made one mistake that he hasn’t made again and if people can’t let it go or move past it you’re essentially telling people that’s it’s pointless to change or grow. But I don’t think either of them would deserve the grudge you seem to have. Don’t like them or their acting, fine. But this seemed excessive and also somewhat misguided as you didn’t even get the person right.
Not to mention seeing issues in characters like Lilith, Izzy, and Max that honestly weren’t there. It sounds more like reaching or searching for an issue that didn’t exist because you didn’t like the show. The Latino aspect of the Lightwoods was something the show added, which was perfectly fine. But skin tone, hair color, and eye color can vary among family. Alec and Max could be said to have recessive genes found somewhere in their family line, if you want an explanation why they don’t necessarily look latino. Kids can have vastly different physical traits than their parents. Genetics is fun that way.
Izzy and the Yin-Fen had nothing to do with her being Latina either. Big leap. It was a plot point to further the iron sister thing and also so Izzy and Raphael could have some drama as well as cause tension among the vampires/Raphael with the main Shadowhunters. And give Aldertree a reason to be an antagonist. It couldn’t be Clary as she’s the technical protagonist and wouldn’t work story wise, Jace and Alec are men so they can’t go see the iron sisters, plus with Alec Magnus would catch on so quick. That leaves Izzy as she’s the one Shadowhunter still a main and a woman but not someone who would be found out immediately. Plus this happened because she wasn’t healing fast enough from a demon attack. That’s why it was given to her. Aldertree used her desire to see the iron sisters to trick her. It fit for her character. And honestly Izzy and Raphael’s friendship was one of my favorite things about the show. I liked having them have that connection that wasn’t romantic.
And yes Jem Carstairs was the one addicted to yin-fen in the infernal devices series, many many years before Izzy was even born.
With Lilith, they were expressing her demonic nature. Darkness, evil, nothing more complicated than that. Why worry about something being taken out of context when its not actually what’s going on? That’s worrying about a non-existent problem. If someone can’t do their due diligence and realize that it’s just a demon making their entrance from a demon realm to ours, not an offensive imitation of someone’s race, that’s not the shows fault. It’s a reach to think that would be black face, even out of context. But she’s, you know, the mother of demons and evil. In the books she’s I believe the first demon to have once been human. She’s top tier evil so making her look a bit like the other demons once in awhile isn’t that weird. As context matters and she’s a demon. And again feels like reaching for a problem.
Alec was meant to be a stiff character. Even in the books he was stiff, uptight, and often grumpy. Magnus brings out a softer side to him in both. They compliment each other. It’s not Matt’s acting, it’s Alec as a character. He was much more stiff in the books so I’m not sure what you were expecting out of his character. I’m not sure how you saw no chemistry between them either, and their relationship was probably my favorite thing about the series. If anyone didn’t have chemistry in the show it was Izzy and Simon.
And the finale being cancelled would have everything to do with it feeling rushed. They likely had plans to continue the story so ending it where they had it was going to feel rushed as they had a laid out plan they now had to abruptly change. Who knows if Clary would have lost her memories in their original plan. But because they had to change it so quickly that’s what we got. And I didn’t hate the ending honestly. It felt like they chose to come full circle with Clary back to forgetting the shadow world. And they had her starting to remember, so it’s not like it was set in stone. If they ever did get that season 4 they could have Clary return with her memories.
Is it the best book to show adaptation? No. Is it the worst I’ve seen? Also no. I think it’s still miles ahead of shows like true blood. But honestly it being so different isn’t necessarily a bad thing. It’s fine to take a book, adapt it, and make it more your own. I’m not sure they ever advertised it as being something faithful to the books but inspired by Clare’s Shadowhunters chronicles. I actually prefer many of the changes they made, like aging them up made them more relatable. Having Alec less of a stiff grump than he was in the books was great too as honestly in the books Alec grates on me most of TMI. They made him more likable. I didn’t really like him until I read the Eldest Curses.
So yeah it’s very different from the books but I think as it’s own thing, a thing inspired by Clare’s work it’s enjoyable. Is it perfect, of course not. I know many would love if their favorite books got a 1:1 adaptation but that almost never happens. The books and the show both have things that aren’t great and things that are. I know a lot of book fans don’t like the show and that’s fine. I understand it’s hard seeing a series you know so well be adapted and be totally different. But I don’t think it’s as bad as you’ve made it out to be.

Totally agree about Alec’s character. Being stiff was literally the point of his character in the books. I hated the show but mostly because of how much it deviated from the books I loved.

@@romeofonzi2300 yeah like Alec was meant to be the stiff uptight character so I’m not sure what the op was expecting out of Alec. And that’s fair, I loved the show for its deviations but I know that’s also why many book fans don’t love it. And I can understand that cuz there’s some adaptations I feel that way about.
