  • Honda CX500 Cafe Racer: In this video I continue to rebuild the unique V twin engine in this Honda CX500 Cafe racer project. With the back cover on, it's time to reassemble the ignition system. This Honda CX500 Cafe Racer s based on the 1982 Australian released "Shadow" and unlike other models, was fitted with a transistorized ignition instead of the fault prone CDI system. I will show how to fit all components, how to set the static timing, and how to diagnose an incorrectly fitted system, which is critical to correct operation of the Honda CX500 engine, and I will document process in detail, including torque values, using the factory service manual (FSM). Please continue to watch as I rebuild this 1982 Honda CX500 engine, documenting the whole process in great detail, and discuss what I plan to do to convert the Honda CX500 form a stock bike to a cafe racer, with a GSXR front end fork conversion and full engine rebuild, spoke wheels, as well as other modifications. This will be a very detailed video series that will show how the Honda CX500 is dismantled then reassembled, and all mechanical aspects of dismantling and rebuilding the Honda CX500 engine will be detailed and documented. I aim to do things like key relocation under seat, relocation of the battery, removal of the air box and rebuilding of the carburetors to include velocity stacks, removal of the H box and replace with straight through exhaust pipes, fitting Motogadget components like the M-Unit Blue, Motogadget Mini, instruments, and a whole range of other mods. The end result should be a unique Honda CX500 Cafe Racer.

Found this video to be REALLY good. I am rebuilding a trike for somone at work at present. When he first got it it was a mess! Could not start it. Bought a new ignition switch, and it fired up! Although the trike was a mess, the engine sounded really healthy, and quiet.
However, since stripping it down, struggling to get it started. I think somewhere I have got my wires crossed, or, ignition timing maybe 180 degrees out. When I took engine out, I noticed quite a bad oil leak from the ATU cover. So changed gasket. But I also removed the plate with the two pick ups on it. Cannot remember if I removed the cam for the ignition pulse. So I am hoping I have got it 180 degrees out. I will also get my ohm meter set at 2k and check resistance, and continuity for earth.
    Big thanks for video.

Good vid, mine had the CDI and I replaced that with an Ignitech due to a faulty stator not powering the CDI. I thought your stator wires looked different, due to it being a TI I guess.

Hi. I did the same thing on my cx but i noticed that you can move the pointer cam without unscrewing the main bolt. Thoe this thing is normal? thank you
