  • It is time to get the ignition side of things done on the CX500 build with a nice kit from Rae San in Australia. This is the hall effect kit for the GL650 engine which has pre-programmed ignition curves built into it to allow the removal of your old spring actuated advance mechanism. There are many kits available from Rae San so this kit may not be the exact unit you have but the installation will be similar regardless. My goal was to make this a very clear video with detailed views of the flywheel markings and how/why you set the pickup plate the way you do. Be sure to follow along as this bike nears completion!
    Note: I did update this video as I gave incorrect information on setting the timing so I revised it to be accurate. Thank you to those who let me know!

    The more I watch you upgrade electrical stuff on old bikes, the more I picture Howard Stark as the old Honda mechanics saying "I'm limited by the technology if my time" lol. This looks cool, I probably won't tackle this anytime soon but I just may in the future.

      I hear ya. Just note that simply because I'm using it doesn't mean you need it. This is a performance oriented bike where I have made cylinder head changes, fabricated intake manifolds, port matched those, have upgraded carbs, and made a full stainless exhaust so I wanted to upgrade the ignition to take full advantage. It is not needed for an everyday bike

    I was able to get the metal cover off with the coolant bottle dangling in there, and once that metal cover was removed you are able to get the coolant bottle out. Little tight but doable. Jut got my Rae San kit yesterday so hoping to get it installed in the next few days. Re-watching this again to be more familiar with the install. 👍

      No problem mate I'm really happy with the Rae San ignition on my CX650 she revs out really nice The big advantage with the Rae San system is that it gets rid of all the old ignition parts on the CX's the only disadvantage which applies to all modern bikes is that you need a good battery if it goes flat you cant jump start it

    Im having to open up my cx500 (with a TAI cdi ) and stumbled upon the RAE-SAN system because all electrics have died. It does completely replace the TAI-cdi units if i'm correct? I am however i am still struggleling with the coils, because TAI based systems have specific coils which have 2 instead of 1 wire coming out of them (am i making sense ?). The coil(s) on your AXE build only involves 1 wire to each side. The difference with a cdi-setup is the B/W wire. Or is that just some sort of ground (i read there is a diode in there somewhere that makes things different?) .
    Anyway.... seems like a good upgrade to any cx/gl , and with your clear instructions easy enough to install

  • @hugoriva3742

    Nice and very clear explanation! I´m from Argentina and just installed the full kit in my CX 1978. The system works fine but I have a failure around 2.5/3000 RPMs. Over those RPM, the engine accelerates correctly... Have you had any issue with the kit? It looks like an electronic issue but we couldn´t solve it. Maybe an eletric interference... Regards and congrats for your channel!

      @BrickHouseBuilds  Před 2 lety

      Hey Johnny, nothing is bolt on in regards to fitment. My coil, reg/rec, everything is mounted in a specific place using custom brackets. You will likely have to fabricate or modify your mounting brackets to get your coils to fit.

    Currently building my CX500 thanks to your awesome video's. I come back often and watch them over and over. I am lost on one thing however. Coil Packs. I can't seem to find a video where you mention it. Which coil packs and spark plug wires are you using? OEM Stock? Im about to start the wiring phase but im stuck on coil packs. Not sure what to do.

    • @BrickHouseBuilds
      @BrickHouseBuilds  Před 10 měsíci +1

      Well I do appreciate you watching the videos and am happy they are helpful. Once thing I must say though is DO NOT use parts just because I use them. This bike is unique and often required aftermarket stuff due to not having any factory components available for the engine retrofit. Remember its a GL650 engine in a CX500 frame so different ignition and charging system. I get so many emails from people buying the wrong parts because of my videos when they simply aren't needed and I hate to feel like I caused them wasted time and money.
      Back to your question though I do show the coil and reg/rec when I mount them under the tank in an earlier episode. I used an Ultima single fire unit. If you have a stock CDI system you need to use your CDI coils. If you have a TI system you do have more options but I would save cash and just use your originals. If it ain't broke don't fix it sort of deal. I honestly have no idea what plug wires I used as made multiple changes there.

    • @kirkhenry4969

      @@BrickHouseBuilds Thanks for getting back to my question. I was perhaps not clear. I watch all your video's. (I am enjoying your series on your new garage).
      I bounce from video to video trying to learn. I understand that this bike is not the same as my CX500.
      Missing info in my last message. I have installe Ricks Motorsport stator, new Reg/Rec, Rae San Hall Effect for my CX500 so my charging system is all up to date. Knowing that.... Should I still use the stock coils?

    • @BrickHouseBuilds
      @BrickHouseBuilds  Před 3 lety

      The diagrams are available on his website but everything is self contained so to speak. You have wiring from the pickup to the box and then output from the box to your coils. No you don't need to replace them. There is a single switched 12v wire to power the system.

      Well in my reg/rec and coil video I link the ones I used as well as this here. It depends on what you want to do. The factory 650 ignition is pretty good but I of course wanted to try a few different things here. You don't need the exact coil I used or the reg/rec if you have a traditional battery

    I’m currently doing a Rae San conversion on 1980 model cx500.
    I bought new coils on eBay that are 3.1 ohms resistance but checking up different online manuals. One source says coil resistance should be less than 1.5 ohms, while another says resistance 2 to 4 ohms?
