It’s started in Mexico as (la mordida) as a way playful way to celebrate a birthday a lot of us don’t mind it but there are a few of us who do which in that case we don’t do.
That's okay if its only between friends and not a special cake like this.

I can relate and would be upset too. I was 15 years old. And had cake, flour, egg, and beer everywhere on me. This was my so called friends. And some were my oldest sister friends that had the beer. Everyone was laughing and none processed to help me take it off. I started to cry. It took a week for the everything to come of my hair and inside my ears. Till this day I don’t do to my children.
