    Removing the intake silencer is a proven 4 HP gain. MM&FF magazine tested all on these cheap/free easy mods "back in the day". When these cars first came out, we were doing everything we could find to eek out every bit of extra power out of them. Removing the silencer was part of the famous/proven "10 Minute Tune-up". Every little gain adds up.

    Don't need to bother with the extra idler pulley. For future belt purchases just remember to ask for the stock belt for a non-A/C 5.0. Its the correct length.

    If you disable the Smog pump in the ECM with a chip or a Qurterhorse it will eliminate the 1200-1500RPM start up. It's nice starting it up and it going right to a calm idle.

    On a budget build instead of getting block off plates you can just cut the plumbing off the pipe coming off the back of the head take the original pieces, flip them over to the flat side not the “hole” side and with a little high temp silicone re attach to the head and you are blocked. Great Video 👍

    Once you determine the correct length, record the belt length. I personally have a notebook with my mods, and, if I've used parts from other cars ( Turbo coupe, continental hydro boost, etc). With my under drive pulley/alternator upgrades smaller pulley, it is definitely a different belt.

    I've recently read about the SMOG systems in these cars (specifically the EGR and SMOG pump) and both systems are "bypassed" and not used during wide open throttle. So as a performance gain, I don't see it making much of a difference. In the same article's I read, if the SMOG pump is removed, the catalytic converters are more prone to clogging because they are not getting properly heated from the SMOG pump system. So, in conclusion, If a guy wanted (or needed) to keep the car emission legal for street use, I would recommend keeping these systems intact and functioning. But...full discloser... I don't have any experience with removing or disabling these systems on these cars... so I don't know.

    Before you go ditching those factory headers, determine if they're a problem. They should be good to 300HP and if you got them out like mine are, you can open the mouth 20% or more porting out all that welding slag the factory left. Shorty headers may not be worth the cost, depending on your build.

Finally got another sports car after so many years, a 94 SN95 GT convertible. Nice virgin car with low miles and all original. I was looking for another Foxbody, 90 LX just like mine but this one popped up and it was at a good price so I couldn't let it go. Unfortunately its an auto. Slowly doing some mods to it. Only thing is I’m struggling to find any real benefits of doing this (particularly if still running cats); yes a cleaner and more streamlined engine bay is nice… but there’s minimal weight reduction and the parasitic loss is negligible…. Unless I’m missing something (wouldn’t be the first time 🤣)

      LOL - yes you do bring up great points for sure. For me, its one more thing to have to worry about failing - due to age - that I never want to replace. But realistically, one needs to remove a lot of the plumbing to change the headers so I figured I would "kill two birds with one stone" and just remove it all together.

      There might be different parts availability but the pumps used in F150s of this era are getting harder to find with junkyards being your best options most of the time. For something like this I don’t want to keep digging into things every time it fails and then I head off to the junkyard to find another pump that is 30+ years old with 200,000 plus miles.

    Could get that piece of mind by tucking a 2nd belt in the trunk I'm sure you considered that an opted out but hey I get it, my 95 5.0 vert was my mom's who passed away in 2015 from cancer and her husband talked it to go to him while she jaundice confusedand dieing I was heart broke seems so sentimental, but he moved last year and abandoned it in the drive with flat tire and dead battery seeing it I was furious when I found it with some rear quarter damage and lichen growing on the paint n top but it 100% rust free and in good condition other than the other stuff and is 100% original except mufflers and stereo I have done so 98/99% oem I guess it had been winter garaged up untill 2016. Im a gear head that's always had older cars so modding them is no biggie but I like the idea of it being unmolested but it's not that fast and it's pretty quiet even with fauxmaster 10 series muffs.i want to do an off-road x or H pipe and a couple mods, but I want to be able to return it to stock for whatever reason one being emission laws being reinforced on older cars. But a smog pump delete is a mod but I want to leave the tubing in place if I go better shorty headers I guess I could just leave them back there, .my pump seems to be working fine do you think it would free up any amount of noticable power? I'm assuming may see 5+/- hp on am actual Dyno but not the butt dyno. But I could use any extra power with tall gears and the arm stretching 215hp lol, being stock for the moment its not fast but has enough power to be fun especially with a 5 speed and it has great daily drivability and fuel economy its actually get noticably better fuel economy than my 2010 grand caravan.

    Thanks again for a really good instructional video. I've never seen the air silencer before, and I've had foxes since the 90s! I still have the smog stuff on my mild street car. In fact, I installed a hi-flow catted h-pipe and had 2 "racing" cats added when I put my supercharger on to ensure I would pass emissions. Runs cleaner than stock (according to the pass sheet) and flows better too! But I did than years ago when the H was $250. So it is possible to have performance and help the environment. Don't get me wrong though - that's just my 2 cents.

      Hey bud thanks for the kind words! I’ve never heard of any of that or dealt with any of it personally. Technically the equipment was installed for a reason however like I state in the video, I would be interested in seeing someone (that is qualified) to perform a comprehensive review of how all this equipment works in practice and if it does the things it was intended to do on paper/in theory. Keep in mind that no matter what, cats (like almost all automotive parts) have a service timeline and will plug over time. They are not an item that will work like new forever. To be completely honest, if you still have stock cats on one of these cars - and it has any sort of typical miles on the odometer - I would say your cats are “past due” and should be changed. Hope that helps

    Removing that oipe must be torture, honestly, get cheap replacement heads without that stupid air pipe. People are amazed what that actually does for the sake of emissions, it pushes air into the heads which not a power adder.

  • @mrbighands
    @mrbighands Před 3 měsíci +1

    great work , was there a lot of carbon in the Smog pipe that connects to the back of the heads? i want to take mine off cuz i think its plugged up, I'm getting codes about both thermactors . I read that if its plugged up you will get codes also i changed my EGR valve and it was completely plugged up and seized. she seems to be getting better gas mileage with the new EGR installed.

    The people trying to flip the fake unmolested cars will pay good money for all that old smog stuff lol. Passed the old dyno emissions inspection for years without the pump on and old mac Catted h pipe, thank god there too old for emissions these days here lol. Oil the smog pump before you store it, they tend to seize over time if your keeping it. Thermactor plugs and a shorter belt are the way I all ways did it, way cheaper lol.

    I have an 84 LX with the same thermactor set as yours. The original smog pump lasted 35 years. the Dorman replacements were built like crap and the bearings fail within 2 years. Getting hard to find the correct smog pump anymore. I notice with my 84 that when I have a code 44, thermactor not function, the car runs like shit. When I replaced the TAB valve it went back to a smooth idle. So I've preferred to keep my secondary air system functioning. But like I said the parts are getting harder to find. My car has been idling rough the past few weeks, ran a scan and got code 44. The closest thing to mine I could find on eBay was a TAB for an 87 which is identical to the TAB for an 84 apart from the part number. I'm sure it will work fine. All it does is open or close depending on vacuum. Just curious, the ECM on OBD1 cars aren't really programable. Did you have to install a diode or something to fool the ECM? When that smog pump system is removed the ECM will notice and not just produce an annoying code, it can make the car run like shit until you resolve it. My car ran like shit last time my TAB failed and I'm sure this time will be the same thing.

    Hey! Two things! What about the charcoal canister and everything that connects to it? And also, I was under the impression that the EGR system circulates gas fumes back into the engine in order to conserve fuel consumption. Won't you notice less gas mileage removing the EGR system? I've ran mine both ways. I really feel like the EGR system saves you a little on gas consumption. I know most people prefer horse power over gas consumption. What are your thoughts?

    Fellow Canuck here! I am almost done removing engine from my '87 GT and was so happy to remove that smog nonsense! My question is though, how does not having all that smog equipment affect my chances when I have to have the car inspected for road worthiness? My GT has been stored for many years and will have to pass inspection before putting it back on the road. Wondering if you have any info on that?

    • @dwestinghouse
      @dwestinghouse Před 2 lety +2

      Get your inspection done first with all OE equipment. Then you can't fail. In Ontario all OE emissions equipment must be in place. You can always remove it after if you choose to. I had to put CATs on my car to get my inspection done.

    • @KASLCustoms
      @KASLCustoms  Před 2 lety +1

      This is a good point. I too wouldn’t take any chances with inspections however if you felt like chancing it, I definitely wouldn’t remove the Cats prior to inspection. They will definitely be looking for those. The smog pump on the other hand may squeak through…😬🤷‍♂️
