Steve Hale was such a solid player. Smart , high assists, great on defense.

I saw 4 years of great basketball in Carmichael Stadium from 1967 to 1971 with Charlie Scott, Dickie Grubar, Rusty Clark, Eddie Fogler and Larry Miller.

I actually watched this game on wbtv. It was the first UNC game l ever watched on TV or listed to on the radio. I've been a UNC fan ever since. Thank you thank you for posting this.

broadcaster, thanks for putting up these rare UNC games. The national outlets show the same 4 or 5 old school games over and over again. I don't believe this game has ever been shown on any of the networks(ESPN Classic) that show games from the 1980's and 1990's.
A couple things struck me about this game, first is that it's the only video I can find that shows Chris Washburn doing something positive. I've only heard bad things about C.Washburn(and he brought it on himself), but I still wanted to see how good of a college player he was. C.Washburn had the mannerisms and a similar game to Shaquille O'Neal in college.
The 2nd thing that struck me about this game is that N.C.State came into this game unranked, but had a similar amount of NBA talent on it's roster as UNC who was #1 during this time. I've got to assume that Jim Valvano was a great recruiter, but not a strong X's and O's coach, he also had a bunch of low IQ players during this time. I know J.Valvano always had his teams playing at a high level when the ACC and NCAA tourneys started. I believe this group of players made deep NCAA tourney runs for 2 or 3 years.

Not really. There have been games there since. “Final” game has since become erroneous, and Valvano should have been slapped for that stunt.

Just my opinion, but I think that Marty's much better at doing basketball on TV than he is doing the Reds on the radio. I lived in Indiana in the late 70s, right across the border from Dayton, Ohio, and you couldn't avoid the Reds radio network even if you WANTED to. On a typical Saturday or Sunday afternoon, Marty and Joe were on stations all over the dial, in Indiana, Kentucky, and, of course, Ohio. I never liked Marty doing the Reds. "And THIS one belongs to the Reds!" That COULD be because I wasn't particularly a Reds fan. I also don't think he deserved the Ford Frick Award. But I can't complain; I didn't VOTE! I've always wondered---What's with his VOICE, anyway? Does he inhale HELIUM before broadcasting a game?

Another example of under achievement. All that talent. Did they win the Big Dance? OF COURSE NOT. The reason for this is quite simple. The coach was a hack. But never worry Tarheel fan...they did it the "right way " Most talented team year in and year out. Unfortunately they were never taught how to win. Hackety Hack don't talk back. I am so glad i support a WINNER like Robert Montgomery Knight .

Hacks don't coach to 2 national championships, 9 Final fours. Also he doesn't choke his own players and get fired from his job like Coach Knight.

@pauljohnson3792 Robert Montgomery Knight: THREE titles.
      Clean Dean: TWO.
Just because Neil Reed was too soft to play for The General doesn't make him a villain. Also I respectfully ask this question: Who had the better head to head record? Who has more all time wins? Yeah. Scoreboard. NCAA hoops are about WINNING. GOOD DAY SIR!

@@redemption1933 yep. Real class act Coach knight. Wasn't he arrested in the Pan Am games ? Caused in International incident. He physically attacked more than one player. Just happened to get get videoed once. Indiana must have thought coaching and teaching young men to behave like grown men was important. That's why the drummed his ass out of town. But if you want to compare head to head programs, okay. UNC has more National Championships, higher winning percentage, more Final 4s, way more total wins. Hell, I can't even remember when Indiana was a factor. Heels have won 4 Titles since Indiana won their last....ROFLMAO.
