  • On the night of the 5000m final, Australian middle distance runner Craig Mottram walked the short 2-kilometre distance from his home in Richmond to the Melbourne Cricket Ground where 100,000 were packed into one of the world’s greatest stadiums, to execute one of the best races of his life.
Competing against a highly decorated field, including the reigning World Champion, Kenyan runner Benjamin Limo, Mottram had been working on a game plan to come away with the gold medal, a game plan that was almost executed perfectly before being upset by an unheralded 19-year-old Kenyan runner named Augustine Choge. But the race remains a classic Commonwealth Games moment.
