    I must say that this is impressive Donn, the way you use your lathe to do more than just lathe work. I'm a journeyman of 35 years and I must say that some of these things are a first. I guess that necessity IS the mother of invention, eh? Nice work my friend!

    Honest question. If you have the lathe. Couldn't you have just made the cog from thicker material and machined a counter bore matching the profile you had? It would've saved you from drilling and welding all the holes to attach the 2 pieces.
    Awesome build either way. How many hours in all did you have in it?

    I'm wondering a few things. 1. How much does each sprocket weigh? Looks like a lot. and 2. I see that the sprocket parts appear to be laser cut. So why not have all those extra holes you drilled laser cut, too? I wouldn't build this just based on drilling those extra holes. WAY too much time involved. And 3. How much did this project end up costing?

    • @DonnDIY
      @DonnDIY  Před 9 lety +2

      Seth Watson Don't worry man - they're just sprockets! Next winter I'll make a new set of "airy" sprockets like on bicycles that reduce the weight quite a bit. I had'em laser cut in a hurry so I did not ponder on the design so much as I should have because this setup is a prototype. There's no need to drill these holes by hand - that was just me killing time in winter. If you have at least one hand you could draw the holes in the gears on the CAD drawings or any shapes if you want to make'em lighter and have them cut. At first I invested around 700 euros, then bought new set of (12 pcs) wheels adding up to 1K. But in my country a set of tracks cost at least 3K, so I'm a winner from the get-go.
