Don’t lock the steering on a flat tow. Never had to do it before, so lesson learned! All I could think was these giant tires locking to one side and throwing me off the road. Safety third people!
lol
Every time i flat tow i put a bungee cord on the bottom of the wheel and down to the seat. Works great!
Was this truck in Tennessee? What town did you find it in? Awesome truck!
😂🤣😂
cant wait to see the rest of it
That truck it's so cool man, love to see an entire series of the restoration of that
so would I
Frame-off restomod with Cummins power? Yes, please!
yes please
@@SomeBigFatGuy Only you lose the timeless old soul of this truck when you engine swap them. Obviously they're plenty fun just the way they are, and i can testify to that, I have a bone stock '56 Chevy truck myself. 6 cylinder and a 4 on the floor and i have several classics, even modern engine swapped ones, and none are as fun as that truck.
@Randall Johnson True, and it's about time someone left one of these trucks stock.
That idle note tho 👌
McBeef
most definitely
Make this a series! Fuel system, ignition/wiring, budget interior, brakes and lines, bed of the truck would all make great 15-20min single episodes
Really love how you told the story of how the truck caught your attention and how you couldn’t stop thinking about it and then went to see it. I could feel your emotions of excitement. It was nice to hear the story for a change, rather than have the video start off “here’s a cool truck lets fix it”
Considering the circumstances that truck really didn't fight you at all to get running. Popped right off so he needs to be freshened up and put back to work. Great farm truck right there.
"It want's to go, can feel it."
*starts, immediately takes off*
It runs so good it doesn’t even need a driver. It just wants to run
All it need to drive is its own robots hands and feet and let it be able to use it and then it will be off LOL!
Truck was saying "c'mon kid, we got s*it to do", and the hand grenade bit was gold. 🤣
I thought that’s what it was, good idea Dylan but hold off for a bit. Lol
For the love of God, do a build series on this truck! I would love to see this thing all cleaned up and being put to work building your new shop!
I agree but no Crazy stuff ..No add ons ..Just make her look like she did in 1957 ..nothing else please. So many people do restorations and totally destroy the look of the vehicle..
@@edwardverlander7681 completely agree with you
@@edwardverlander7681 I would be tempted to put a modified full dually pickup box on it. But, honestly, the guys suggesting a rollback are smarter than me.
What would you guys think about transplanting the heavy duty Cummings from a newer Dodge?
@@unknownsoul13 That truck would be cool with a cummins, but he would prob need a new rear end too if he did that. Those things are so low geared that a cummins would be out of revs before reaching much speed.
35:38 the truck is like "Alright I'm gonna head out"
"I can definetly tell it wants to go" "starts Truck again" "Truck says: Aight Imma head out" lol
As a guy that is restoring several Dodge military trucks, the look on your face driving that beast for the first time was wonderful. Welcome to the brotherhood of big Dodge trucks!! That ol' straight 6 in there won't let you down, I've rebuilt 3 with my dad so far.
I hope he leaves the old powerplant in. Too many Cummins swaps out there on these.
It followed you home, you keep it.
Good one !! 😆
Oh c'mon Dad! Look how cute he is! Can we keep him pleaaaase??
When I saw the diesel pouring out of the gas tank I thought wow that looks pretty good but then I remembered oh yeah that’s not red farm diesel.
its not diesel
I thought the same thing!
Pulling that D500 with that Ram conjured up an image of a mother dragging an unruly kid home by his ear! Classic looking D500!! Bring her back!
nah, that was the kid pulling the mother
When engines and vehicles were built tough.
Just watched Diesel Creek start up his late 50’s early 60’s road grader and the thing also just starts and runs. It seems cars not so much, but heavy equipment was built to last, the fact it started when just trying to check spark said it all lmao.
Screw built ford tough, this thing is alive after SSOOOOOOOOOOO long
Just proves the theory that all cars & trucks just want to run. You've got to do a restore on it.
Almost any not stuck flathead six will run
Reminds me of Forrest Gump "That's my Boat"
Dylan "That's my Truck"
OMGOSH! I just commented the same thing! hahaha!
That's all I could think of when I saw that!
@@louroberts5567 too funny
What time??
You're a cool dude Dylan McCool. A genuine, no BS person just having fun and bringing us alone. A tip of the hat to you sir!
I LOVE Big Bad John! Ever since I watched Spielberg's "Duel," I love old trucks. You gotta do a full-on restoration of this! The truck definitely deserves it. I mean, just look at its enthusiasm! 35:36 It really wants to work again! lol
When you finally get to experience the engineering masterpiece of the 48-59 dodge truck
A hydraulic flatbed would fit nicely on that rig, for picking up cars. Would be a nice set piece and the seller would surely get a kick out of it. Also, jet wash it please!
I was lmao when it took off on its own, I then started thinking, what a heart warming video, a young fella and his truck that didn't take much to make it run
I like that little chuckle "he he, left it in gear". And of course it fires right up and just walks off when you make that one little mistake.
Dude this is epic, I agree with everyone in saying that Big John is a keeper
Ol doc hudson saves the day again. That 57 dodge is so dang cool.
Brother I see a big indication you are born again. I am also and so pleased with the Lords blessings.
Reliability like that needs to be rewarded, Big John definitely needs a good wash and polish, even go all out with a fresh paint job, go full resto on him.
It would look absolutely beautiful!
Great video Dylan. Glad the "takeoff" turned out to be laughable because that could have ended very badly. Thanks for taking us along for the ride.
That was brilliant and hilarious. The truck was like "Fooled you!"😂😂😂
You two were meant to be together!
I love how you step on the bumper and the suspension doesn't even budge
When it started rolling in gear: "WHO? WHAT? I'M AWAKE, LET'S GET TO WORK!"
"IM OUTTA HERE. LATER"
That comment man perfect
Lmao
"Will it run?"
Hell Yeah!! And no Dylan required 😂😂😂
When you turned the key and it fired right up, my heart freaking stopped. Simply amazing. Can not believe it fired right up.
It seems 50’s-60’s equipment just loves to run, check out Diesel Creeks grader also just starts up ready to work. They built equipment so well it just starts without much work.
If there was ever a CZcams post on old truck's then this is the one I would recommend anyone and everyone to watch. You didn't have to say much as the look on your face said it all. In my opinion one of your best post's to-date. Well done young man bloody well done. Gary 🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧
"It wants to go, I can feel it"
Then he started it and it went
just like it wanted
"He stood six foot six and weighed two forty-five
Kinda broad at the shoulder and narrow at the hip,
and everybody knew you didn't give no lip
To Big John"
Heck of a name for a heck of a truck
"Nobody seemed to know where John callled home,
he just drifted into town and just stayed all alone.
He didn't say much, kinda quiet and shy,
and if you spoke at all you just said 'Hi,' to Big John."
Yessir, the name fits.
I got to meet Jimmy Dean when i was a kid at the stock show. I was just talking to him we had long chat. My mom knew who he was didn't tell me till after we left.
This is definitely gonna be my new favorite series on youtube, im in love with this truck
“i can tell the truck wants to go”
then dylan starts it and it takes off the truck said “yeah i want to go just with out you”
Greetings from Cleveland, the home of PB Blaster... Those first generation Dodge Ram trucks were built to work and work hard!!!! Just get the brakes fixed and get some good rubber on her and you've got a exceptional towing / hauling rig.....
nice after the charger we are seeing the repairs of a lots of classics still rooting for a new full restoration series tho
not suggesting anything but imagine a fully restored dodge truck to carry the dodge challenger to events (altho its perfectly capable of driving itself but just imagine how cool it would look)
I think once something like that calls his name he’ll focus on it for now we can see these random finds but eventually I’m sure something will pop up yelling “Building ME!”
That would be AWESOME!! Showroom looking ‘57 to carry his cars to shows.
@@vayabroder729 right that was my idea too it would be a different level of flex for him
Big John needs a patriotic over haul. Red Plaid Flannel seat covers. White Body, blue accents, rims, front bumper.
What’s up with the editing in this?! The music?! It’s all fantastic!!! The channel is coming into its own and I love all of this.
when flat towing you do not lock the steering wheel. It would have followed you like a regular trailer with a free steering.
Make it a rollback to fetch future vehicles. Would make great channel content.
I totally agree so he could tow all the vehicles he buys and can even haul them to car show's
Or a ramp truck
@@lehmanbarfield3514 Yeah, old school! Wouldn't it look neat with that 70 Road Runner up on back.
I love when you can show some of the surrounding scenery. This part of the country sure is beautiful!
I think I’ve said this before so impressive that you got this old dodge running again! Love seeing videos like this! Keep up the great work!
6:28 anyone else notice that beetle
It looked lonely. I thought toss it on the bed if the truck and take it with you.
Sure did! He could fit that Beetle on the bedtruck! :D
Um, I saw A Mustang 2 Hatchback at the end of the video. Wanna know more on that car (Got A 78 Ghia In My Garage So..)
Indeed I did notice. Got another tow bar?
@@arnoldnellis6120 Looks like a King Cobra.
I LOVE this truck! Please make it a series! 😁
Planning on it! I love it.
Subscribed. You had me hooked from start to finish. Can't wait for the next part 👍
"Rubbing my Hands together"...Can not Wait for more video's on Big John!!! Great Video Dylan!!! See you in the next installment.
My first day of flying a plane the old pilot told me "these things will fly with or without you." The way that truck took off without you was like "get out of my way!!'
Damn good thing granny gear is so slow, you would've had a hell of a chase on your hands if it was any quicker.
Awesome video!! I think I was as surprised as you when it started and actually drove on it’s own power! Can’t wait to see what you do with it.
I`ve been watching your videos for quite a while now, Darts, Challengers, Chargers, all great, but THIS is definately the best yet. LOVE IT
Great video man glad to be apart of the channel as it grows
The ol flathead 6 runs really well doesn’t smoke that’s a rare find. Somebody has taken good care of that engine.

Thank tge good lord for you being young and having cat like reflexes ! Awesome video as usual Dylan , keep em coming .
This is now my new favorite Dylan McCool video. Reminds me a lot of my late father's old 49 GMC truck he used as a daily driver for awhile when I was a kid. Even my mom drove it on occasion.
Truck was like: "lemme show you how it's done"
Pretty darn Cool Dylan.👍
Love how you show the past and Explain it like a Story Teller Just makes the video so much more enjoyable and entertaining great work As always @Dylan McCool
I just about fell out of my seat laughing when the old girl rolled away from you! Hope you replace the D on the grill badge.
When your 6ft tall and still shorter than the truck lol
Next time you tow like that dont lock the steering. The wheels turn automatically
This!
ok
cool
What an awesome find and revival!! That would be a great addition to any collection!! I’ve done the old start and jump in a few times, definitely gets the blood pumping!!
Thanks for rescuing this old girl, Dylan. That’s one amazing truck and I’ve never seen one like it!
Best introduction and commitary yet
You didn’t have to brace the wheel. It would’ve trailed just fine.
You arent supposed to, the wheel is supposed to turn freely, it would turn itself as it goes through the turns
@@1986Honda4trax yes, but because you are pulling it from a fixed toe hitch, it will always follow the towing vehicle. Trust me, it will trail. It’s not like you’re pulling it from the rear. THEN you need to strap the wheel.
@@1986Honda4trax I’m sorry, I read your comment wrong. You actually agreed not to strap the wheel. Lol sorry.
Nice video, subscribed. The smile you had while driving it (after the 'left it in gear part') says it all. you seem pretty genuine, and pretty excited about this old rig. good for you!
GREAT video, loved it DYLAN...Looking forward for the next one!!!!!!!AWESOME TRUCK!!!!!
Them on Flathead seem to run for a long long time haven’t seen one in a while though
"If you look around, there's a lot of traffic."

Bids the driver to cry me a river while sitting in Seattle traffic
@@jeremyelford7926 i was just going to mention Seattle traffic. Blech!
And Chicago.
@@jeremyelford7926 I was thinking the exact same thing then saw your comment lol.

Hey Dylan, congratulations on looking after an old truck. Happy to see a young guy with some mechanical sympathy. I am from Australia and am doing the same process with my 1974 Dodge D5N 600. It was built here by Chrysler Australia.
Have subscribed and looking forward to seeing more of your video's..
Great job Dylan!!! It runs so good!! Your smile when driving was worth it for sure! Amazing when that thing took off by itself LOL!!
I think this is the easiest old vehicle to get running I’ve ever watched on CZcams.
I haven’t seen you this excited in a while lol look at your face. So cool
Love this truck! Looking forward to watching you rehab the beast!! Please continue... can't wait for part 2!!
Well done Dylan! This is one of my favorite videos you’ve done, that truck is definitely awesome! And Jimmy Dean is the perfect name.
Monster of all Tennessee cold starts!...Nice job!....Cool Truck!
She’s a keeper!! Love it❤️
I also love that truck! Nice find, great work to get it running. Thanks for the video. Can't wait for the next steps.
Sweet Rig, great market for these babies when done up. Nice to see a smile Dylan, you've done well given Big John life again.
I would have kept that sediment bowl on there as a way to check for fuel flow.
I agree, the clear plastic filter he threw in just doesn't look as cool to me...
That engine sounds perfect you wouldn't know it's been sitting for years.
5 minutes in and just loving this already. The truck, your story, the footage. Awesome man ☺ 👍🏻
Thanks for doing this truck. I posted my dodge back when you began your facebook group. I love mine and need to watch your videos to learn as much about mine and how to work on it as I can
The best part of the video was when the truck says " enuf of this im outta here"!!
Thumbed-Up Then Hit Play!
B I G J O H N
Love it!
Good looking truck. Great story telling. You can't kill those old smooth running striaght sixes. A real sweetheart.
Great work Dylan. Can not wait to see what you do with it!
Love that flatbed!
Man this ones going to be good. I'd like to see you restore this one to original.
I agree. Then, use it as per normal, letting it age- and in 3 or 4 years, you'll have a 3 or 4 year old truck with everyday scrapes and bumps. It'll be like going back in time.
I just found your channel... I watched this video and liked it. Your narrating and the fact you are obviously well read is a nice combo. I subscribed. Thanks
You have inspired me to goto a local farm auction an look for old farm trucks around an get them Running. It brings me back to my childhood frowning up on MY aunt's an uncle's Dairy farm. Thanks so much.
OMG. I saw Dylan’s toes go bye bye. That was a close call.
Okay, I laughed hard when he walked back into shot and said "I left it in gear." That was hilarious.
Absolutely marvellous, thank you for that. I followed the whole Challenger build, looking forward to following on this build too!
I was watching Diesel Creeks video on his Grader and just wow. late 50’s early 60’s equipment just works, it doesn’t care, it was built to work and by gosh it works to this day. It’s amazing, watching old car restores be painful with the carbs and then you get these rigs that start when you just trying to check spark lmao. Love it!
