    So you can only use 4tb of an 8tb system? I never would have thought that!

    Hi, Thanks for a great video.
    I have a question regarding the swapping of the drive. Surprisingly there isn't many that answers this.
    So in a RAID-1 config with 2x4TB drives, let's say I run out of space (4TB) or something happens to one of the drives, Is it possible to replace it with more capacity drive (may be 8TB of each)?
    If yes, how does it syncs the data which is already there in one of the good 4TB drive to the new 8TB drive?
    Appriciate your help. My purchase decision is stuck on this question.

      We asked SanDisk and the response was: In hardware-based RAID systems (like our products) in RAID 1 mode, you cannot replace just one drive with a higher capacity to increase the overall useable capacity. The system would still only be able to read that higher capacity drive up to the capacity of the second (lower) drive. You would need to replace both drives with the same (higher) capacity drive if you wanted to get more, and unfortunately that means there wouldn’t be an easy way to transfer the data from the existing drives without putting them in a dock or a new drive enclosure. As such, we don’t recommend replacing the drives, but instead buying a new/separate RAID drive when you have filled the capacity of the first one.
      In hardware-based RAID 0, it is possible to replace just one drive to get more capacity. However, doing so would require the system to rebuild the RAID 0, which would wipe your data completely from both drives. There is no way to replace just one drive internally and transfer its contents to the new drive.
      With software-based RAID solutions, I believe replacing one drive would allow for additional capacity. We do not make any of those solutions and I do not have any info about how this works. But I don’t recommend software-based RAID solutions due to frequent glitches and data corruption issues inherent with any software-type solution.

    Can you swap these out with newer drives then go back to the other drives to see the data on old drives? Sp I dont have to buy new enclosed n drives?

      @SamysCameraOfficial  Před 2 lety

      Hard Drives are typically plug and play, just make sure you have the latest drivers installed on your computer. In the case of a Raid, depending on how you've chosen to format and partition the drives will determine if you need both original drives to be installed back into the Raid inclosure for this to work. Good Luck!

    Guys is it possible to connect two macbook lap tops at the same time with one G-RAID 2 and be able to edit footage from one lap top and copy files from other lap top at the same time through Thunderbolt 3 type C plugs, cause I see that it has 2-3 of these plugs?

    • @SamysCameraOfficial
      @SamysCameraOfficial  Před 2 lety +1

      It really depends on the footage your editing, but in any RAID configuration other than RAID 0, you should be able to edit up to 4k resolution. Please remember that your computer has to be fast enough to do so as well!

  • @walc5704

    G-Raid is not the "ultimate backup solution". I used the G-Raid with a Raid 1 setup. The two drives were good and were mirror image of each other. However, the enclosure failed and I could not access any data stored in those good hard drives as G-Raid use a proprietary way to store data. Ended up I had to find third party solution to recover data. Both the G-Raid Raid 0 and Raid 1 setup rely on a functional enclosure and if that is not the case, you are out of luck. So don't ever believe "G-Raid 2 is the ultimate backup solution". You will regret.

      @@SamysCameraOfficial Good to know that your unit has been going strong. The real question is: what if it stops going strong one day? I have no intention to debate but really the idea of having a backup solution, or an "ultimate backup solution" is to prepare for the worst scenario should that happen. To say that this product itself can provide that solution is misleading. Also the scenario I outlined is fundamental and I don't any customer service can help you much in terms of data recovery. This is not to say that you should not use this product, just that it is not a backup solution unless you incorporate other measures to achieve that.

    Hi Samy, a quick question. I'm using the same exact model, and trying to replace one of the disk since it's full. Once I replace one of the disk, do I manually format the mirroring disk?

    • @samysphotoschool7758
      @samysphotoschool7758 Před rokem

      Our SanDisk reps say: With a G-RAID in RAID 1 mode, if you pull a drive and replace it with a new one, it will automatically start duplicating the data from the remaining mirrored drive. With the G-RAID App, you can stop this process as soon as it starts, and then you can tell it to wipe both drives and start new.
      To clarify the question:
      1) Make sure they are in RAID 1 mode, and not RAID 0. If they are in RAID 0, they will lose all their data if they remove a drive and put a new one in its place
      2) They are asking this question because they are removing one drive to set it aside and archive, correct?
      3) Make sure replacement drive is the same capacity. If they get a higher capacity drive, the RAID 1 will not recognize any additional capacity on it.
