I tell you exactly what's happened with this release, it's very obvious if you know the blu ray mix by heart like I do. also I have no eyesight so I'm very sensitive to the sound mix here and I've been watching the film for over 30y in various formats so I've kept up with all the mixes.
The blu ray mix had LFE but as you say, only down to a point. below 50HZ or so, it really flattens out. That's fairly standard for an 80s flick where the sound hasn't really been touched very much. For this release, someone has clearly got a bass rumble and slapped it, really badly I might add, on to certain things. For example, this person cannot stand a door opening without a thud. Any sharp fast impact has to now have a big thud associated. Listen to the piece of metal clanging as they open Ripleys liferaft, huge thud, not so on the previous mix. Listen to the mother slamming open the door on the family tractor in the special edition cut of the film in Atmos, huuuuuuuge thud! stupidly big over powering thud, not present on blu ray. I could go on.
The truly disappointing thing to me at least, is that for the most part, the atmos is nothing special at all. Nothing has really been translated into the heights properly at all. People seem to think it has and I don't understand where they're getting this info, but I think they are hearing what they can see, not hearing what their ears are telling them. Turn off the lower speakers and not much has gone up there and where it has gone up there, it's not clean.
This is a really sloppy track. The only improvement I can hear is that the vocals are a lot cleaner than they have been for a long time. Oh and the dynamic range isn't quite as scary loud/soft as it is on the blu ray.

Wow. This is the first one of these ive seen. I'll have to look at some of the others in the series. Ive not gor the 4k yet. But for bass. Nothing yet has been able to top the THX Ac-3 Laserdisc for its sheer bombardment of punch and LFE.
Would love ro see that mix through your analysis software for comparison
