    Thank you, I shall be able to listen & absorb tempo a lot easier from your explanation. I got the 3rd example wrong 😮

      With 2/4 and 4/4 it can be very difficult to tell by ear since we the only thing that really puts them apart is the emphasis of the beats. Otherwise they are identical in sound.

    Speaking of a march....Darth Vader Imperial March is a good example of 2/4.

    What about reggae where 2nd and 4th beat are emphasized, 1st beat has no emphasis at all and 3rd beat is the strongest?

    • @PracticalPianoTips
      @PracticalPianoTips  Před 2 lety

      Yes there are exceptions.

      This is called synchopation; the accents come on the up-beat/off-beat. Very very almost certainly African. You won't find any African music that does not do this. The emphasis on the 3rd beat is drums being played in half-time; once again, 100% it is African influenced.
      All African music accents the upbeat and is in half-time.

    But What the deffrence between 2/2 and 4/4 ?

    • @PracticalPianoTips
      @PracticalPianoTips  Před 3 lety +2

      You’re welcome 😊 the difference between 2/2 and 4/4 is that 2/2 is basically twice as fast as 4/4. 2/2 is also called cut time. We generally count 2/2 in 2 beats per measure (even though it really often looks exactly the same as 4/4) because it is played twice as fast as 4/4. So in 2/2 time the half note gets 1 beat, the whole note gets 2 beats, the quarter note gets only 1/2 a beat, and the dotted half note gets 1 and a 1/2 beats.
      I have a few more time signature videos. I would especially suggest these two. You can check my Time signatures playlist.

    I can't be the only one that doesn't feel difference between 2/4 3/4 4/4 or 5/4 in a music...
    Honestly, it's the same for me...

    Am I the only one that cannot hear anything difference

    • @PracticalPianoTips
      @PracticalPianoTips  Před 2 lety +3

      You are not the only one of course. It’s very difficult to hear the difference between 2/4 time and 4/4 time, and sometimes close to impossible. The only difference when listening is in the emphasis of the beat. Sometimes, as the performer we may choose to emphasize less beats in order to make a better, more melodic phrase. The most important thing is for you to know how to count out the beats, feel the music, and interpret it in each time signature.

      @@PracticalPianoTips I’m trying to learn and understand and I am still totally lost…. The 1st beat of a bar being the emphasis beat makes complete sense …. But then you can add accents and all other things just leads to mind explosion 💥

    • @PracticalPianoTips
      @PracticalPianoTips  Před 2 lety +2

      Yes it is quite complicated. You will get better with practice and application of these principles. With time signatures, the main thing you need to know is how to count and the beat emphasize. But sometimes the composer will add other accents as you said, and emphasize a different beat. Also, there is room for interpretation and phrasing. I’m thinking to make a video on time signatures, phrasing and interpretation.
