Monarchs Swarm Anacua!.mov

Monarchs migrating through San Antonio, Texas on Sunday, Oct. 16, 2011. Nectaring on Anacua blooms. Smells so sweet! Good luck on your journey to Mexico! This was shot after 4 pm on an Anacua tree (Ehretia anacua) on the 16th. A conservative estimate is about 300 monarchs on the tree. A large number were still feeding as late as 6:30 pm. A few continued nectaring until 7 (almost dark). We thought they'd roost, but only about 5 spent the night. The following evening (Oct. 17) was very similar in that some were feeding as late as 7 and none roosted on the Anacua. A few spent the night on a nearby Red Oak. Not sure where all the others went....possibly some neighborhood Pecan trees!
