The photo of the lily pads is exceptional - a shot most people would miss unless they're willing to slow down and spend time looking at their environment.
I'd say the lily pad image is for sure a work of art. It's really beautiful!!
I always appreciate how you do 'photo gear' videos. You make them about how the gear fits into your creative process and the images you can make with it instead of just making it about the gear itself. Well done.

I’ve been following your channel for quite a long time. For some reason, I stopped watching for almost three years, don’t know why? I love your channel and how you take us with you and explain along the way, your thoughts behind the shots and what you did to achieve them.
Having just recently returned and catching up, I have to say your storytelling and video editing skills have massively improved, from an already high standard. I don’t know how you maintain, nor dare I say elevate your enthusiasm for your craft? From the outside looking in, you seem happy and love your life. You seem to have found your footing into the photography world, meeting other creative people to share and learn with.
Just wanted to say, Well Done. I love your work, having bought many of your previous calendars, and will definitely send away for the 2024 one as well.

I agree. I like when he explains the composition & such. Really like the 2 leaf photo. Came out better than I thought it would when he started talking about it. Don’t know why when I have a few that are some of my favorites.
Wow… so jealous when I see the locations you go to in your videos. I love how they are part travel and part photography. I think the biggest thing you have skirted but haven’t emphasized is patience. Waiting for that light, the shadows or looking at the location till you work out the picture. Once again, great video!
Fair warning: I haven't even watched the video yet but RESPECT your work so much that I already KNOW the camera has passed w/ flying colors. I'm looking at the same in 1-2 years, finally making the mirrorless leap after a lifetime/52years of Nikon SLRs.
The Nikon Z8 is a dream camera for landscape photography.
With a 45.7 effective megapixel stacked, full-frame CMOS sensor and
No mechanical shutter, there's no shutter-slap to affect the image plane.
Add one of the better or best Nikkor lenses and a highly trained photographer, like Thomas most certainly is, and you have a recipe for spectacular images!
Enjoy the videos. Wondering why you stop adding the f-stop and iso to you photos that you captured? As a hobby photographer, I found that little bit of information useful.
as someone has been shoting for sometimes, camera setting info is the most toxic info you can give to someone in modern-day camera
Different camera have different limitations, different camera size format has different depth of field, Sometimes in the field You may try to cut time and you may not be using the most ideal setting too, Sometimes to also include focus stacking and exposure bracketing ,giving all this settings Without the full set of mentality details is basically pointing people to more confusing direction
Technical specs are not important.
You'll learn this after a few thousand shots.

Thomas, that's so exciting about the new cameras and lens! I'm actually in the same boat. After shooting with my D810 for the past 7 years, I just went mirrorless-on order is a Z8 with almost the same lenses as you. I got the 14-30, 24-120, and 100-400. And yes, is cost me a fortune, but it will be all mine! Now, I'm looking for some extras like the L-bracket and perhaps some filters for the 82mm on the wide 14-30 lens. I've got a bunch of old filters for the mid- and tele-zoom. I can only hope I love the Z8 system as much as I've loved my D810! And stunning images in this video, to be sure!!!
I lived near Montrose for 3 years and absolutely loved Scotland. Those were the days of film only and I enjoyed going out on weekends to different places with my Pentax Spotmatic II and filming especially the old castles along the west coast.
Hey Thomas, congrats on finally receiving your new gear. While it was nice being able to borrow equipment, you understand there is nothing like having your own. The images that you captured are gorgeous. The first shot was just so pretty, the lily pad shot does indeed look like a fine art shot and the last shot definitely works, your hike was not vain. As always, I enjoyed the vlog.

Great Video Thomas, 8:56 stunning image, wonderful colour (s) composition and framing is excellent, 10:57 almost abstract and surreal, the almost 100% black water makes you focus on the soft colours of the subject, 14:41 cracking image the side lighting is brilliant, it highlights the detail in the trees and the soft curves in the hills, Thanks for sharing

Loving the content. Showing the work behind getting those great shots, it’s not just point and shoot. Equipment makes a difference but it’s knowledge of getting the best out if the gear that does it. Would love to see a video of a side by side comparison of using more affordable and premium gear. The z8 body is around $6000 here in Aus.
I also love the photo of the lily pads, very nice indeed! Seeing the colour results of the filter, it is a reminder I should use them again. Thanks for this video & congrats on the new gear!

Congratulations on the new gear, use it in good health. Although I'm fairly certain that you could make very compelling images with nothing but a Kodak "Brownie". I've been watching your videos for a while and, regardless of the equipment, it's your eye that always impresses me the most. The ability you have to spot the potential in a scene is amazing.

I've also got the Z8 with those 3 lenses. The camera and image quality produced with all 3 of the lenses is fantastic. They're so versatile.
Hi Tom. Love this and loved the lily pads in particular. Reminds me of another shot of yours taken in certain frozen tarn in the Lake District in 2018, which is framed up on my wall.

Another great vid. I have to say, though, that as you were shooting that last lone pine, there was an amazing group of trees behind you. 14.26 in the video. Found myself talking to the monitor telling you to turn around. Hahaha.
Nice to see you back in Scotland - it's a challenging time of year but can be worth the effort.
Was in a similar boat to yourself - received my new Z8 the day before leaving for Costa Rica - spent the entire flight trying to get to grips with the Thopm Hogan guide. A bit of a leap since its was my 1st foray into mirrorless - all my previous cameras have been Nikon SLRs.
It is quite a beast - finding it takes a lot of getting used to - and I am finding I am using it in ways I didn't anticipate. So instead of using A and S modes (preset up in different shooting banks) for landscape and wildlife I found myself using M and letting the ISO float.
Initial results are pretty good though I had some horrible condensation issues - often taking an hour or so in the morning before the camera was usable.
Congratulations on your acquisition of the Z8. I love mine, and that 100-400 lens is amazing.

Ha! I was in that exact spot five years ago and took essentially the identical image, with the addition of a bit of mist. It's a beautiful print hanging in my living room. What great memories! Would love to travel back to the UK again some day.

What a debut for the z8 Thomas, the images were beautiful especially the Lilly pad and Scots pine images.
I love the photo by the lake (at 9:00), it's soft and sharp, and a great balance of cold and warm tones, it's a truly a beauty. Maybe not the minimalist scene you fancy most, but I like a lot the complexity within the simple composition. A photo which is worth spending time looking at over and over. The lilies are gorgeous too.
The pace of the video was very nice, a quiet walk into autumn (it hasn't really started here in south of France)

Great video Tom, the Zed8 appears. I think that is a superior kit you have set up.. I'm shooting with the D850 and love it. I think Z 8 might be next but my 850 is going nowhere. That first square shot was beautiful. I have seen the black mist filter before , looks great. Enjoy the new kit and thanks again for the great video.

Great video! One thing that helps me always investigate is having a Peak Design Capture clip.
It’s always out for me to quickly turn it on and have a look or two.
I take significantly more photos when it’s already out of the bag.
Thomas, I have ben following your channel for years and have learned a lot form you about light and composition. In addition to the outstanding images you create, I am always amazed at the amount of time and effort you put into your videos. I assume you shoot these by yourself, so the time you take to place a camera so we see you walk into or out of a scene, must take forever. I would love to see soe BTS videos on how you shoot the video content that you use in your productions. I have been really considering the Z8, and your video just made me want it more :)

The water lily shot was beautiful, but that final shot was absolutely amazing! Everyone always seems to shoot the wet & moody Scotland. It was nice to see a sunny, glorious shot for once. Kudos!
That said, “tick infested” doesn’t fill me with the warm & fuzzies. I wonder, how many ticks do you wind up bringing back to the van/home with you after an outing? 😳

Thanks for the amazing video. Would love to hear more about Z8 in your future videos and how it betters, or not, your photography. These gears are expensive and for hobbyists like me, we really like to spend time knowing if a new gear like Z8 is going to elevate our photography or should we stick with our old gear and change our approach/techniques to produce better images.

Thomas, that lily pad image is (subjectively) in your Top 10 images of all time, in my opinion! I know it's simple. I know it's "only" lily pads, but...WOW. Phenomenal nature image! It's all in the composition. Really well done!

I love the Lilly Pads shot. I have tried to do something similar at a local botanical garden, but I can never get the composition right.
I remember about 10 years ago when I visited the Isle of Skye, it took us about 13 hours to get there by car, but that was including a few stops on the way. Non stop, it probably would've taken about 10 hours. That's from North Nottinghamshire though, so it's a bit further. Takes about 8 hours to get to the Cairngorms from where I live.
Those filters don't half make a difference don't they? WOW!

10:36 Thom, homie, dude... You don't need to add the qualifiers. Your photos are art, that one very much included (it's gorgeous!), and no one is going to fuss about it. Or no one should. Call your work what it is: Art. You are an artist. Just not a pretentious one, which is why we love you. Or one of the reasons. It's on the list. It's a good list.

I am so familiar with “flippin fortunes” for switching platforms. In my case DSLR to Mirrorless (All Canon). But happy I did and never looked back. Really like the Lily-pad shot !! Can’t wait to see what you capture with your new gear! 👍🏻
