Why isn't Vatican a part of Italy?

  • A mighty enclave in the depths of the Italian landscape, Vatican City is 110 acre or 0.44 square kilometer territory with a population of less than 1,000. 110 of those inhabitants constitute the Swiss Guards who make up the state’s army, protecting the precious centerpiece of the Vatican - the Pope himself.
    The Vatican Hill was once an uninhabited and rather disliked holding of the Roman Empire. Under constant threat of floods from the Tiber and the nearby hostile Etruscans, the area was then known as Vaticanus and now houses St. Peter’s Square

    In 1929 Vatican City's independent sovereignty was recognized by the Fascist Italian government in the Lateran Treaty. Sovereignty is exercised by the pope upon his election as the head of the Roman Catholic Church. He has absolute executive, legislative, and judicial powers within the city.

    The short answer to this video's title is "Because Pius IX was a jerk". And I have a few things to add.
    For starters, everyone in Italy knew Rome was going to be the capital, simply because only Rome can be the capital of Italy (it's an Italian thing). Thus during the First Italian War for Independence everyone, including the Pope's generals, assumed he was on board with forming a confederation... Then rejected unification, hence the Roman Republic that chased him out.
    Later the Kingdom of Sardinia, the state that would eventually unify the country, tried to form a confederation with the Kingdom of Two Sicilies and the Papal States with the Pope as president, but Pius IX rejected it on account he'd have to accept the two other kings as peers. Thus it was decided to take over as much of the Papal States as possible and wait out Pius IX to negotiate stuff with his successor. In the meantime, Napoleon III, who needed the support of the French Catholics, made a treaty with Italy guaranteeing Rome's independence and sent a garrison because Italy warned him that Garibaldi wouldn't care - and Garibaldi did in fact repeatedly assemble militias to try and invade Rome, and while Italy usually intercepted him the French had to fight him once. In the meantime, Pius IX would throw provocations at Italy at any chance.
    Then riots started in various Italian cities, as it seemed the government had given up on Rome, putting the new kingdom on the edge of collapse. The government knew they had to act, and soon.
    The chance came in 1870, when the proclamation of the Third French Republic nullified the treaty in the eyes of the Italian government... At the same time Pius IX was holding the First Vatican Council, in which he had the Pope proclaimed infallible when talking ex cathedra on religious matters and was trying to do the same in ALL matters, even against the bishops opposition. And thus Italy invaded and liberated Rome on September 20, with the streets leading to the main church of almost any Italian city and town being dedicated to the date to be extra petty (in Rome instead the street starts at Porta Pia, the gate in the walls where the Italians broke through).
    It was also decided to give the Pope a large allowance and freedom to do everything he wanted as long as he stayed out of politics, but Pius instead declared himself prisoner of Italy, complicating everything for Italy and his own successors. It's at this point that Bismarck suggested Wihlelm I to offer him asylum in Germany, as he fully expected the German Catholics to go Protestant once they were exposed to Pius IX.
    Eventually the situation was solved in 1929 with the Lateran Treaties signed under Mussolini's rule of Italy and Pope Pius XI, establishing Vatican City and regulating things between them and Italy. And the treaty is so important that even after the fall of Fascism nobody dared to touch it, and it was even enshrined in the new Constitution of the Italian Republic.

    • @bergjung
      @bergjung Před 3 měsíci +1

      Not sure if anyone in the modern age has ever thought of London or Washington as a Spiritual “epicentre”.
      And while it may clear to those of us with an interest in history and geopolitics why Vatican is a country, you can’t be angry that an average person is confused by its state. The Catholic Church is explicitly so not just one cultural group and is not trying to form a nation state for all its followers. All other major religions and Christian branches epicentres manage to exist within their respective nations without feeling like they’re under the nations control first instead of to whatever deity they follow. As such I think it’s a perfectly reasonable thing for someone to be confused by and have questions.
