So the winner is the LG V40, btw RIP LG phones
The sony xperia series mark ii versions also sports the 3.5 mm as well as the expandable storage.
@@ornobislam5106 Yes, but I'm not sure Sony's dac is as good as LG's.
I think he said the HELM BOLT sounded better than the LG phone.
They should have focused on the V series 100 percent. Instead lg treated the V series like a failure and stopped innovating it.
I played 24/192k on my LG G8 using Apple Music which is awesome.
Thank you. Fabulous review, I learnt a lot. Love the format, subscribed.
This is really needed video
Thankyou so many hurdles to navigate when trying to play tidal
Mqa files .I have a Samsung and you have saved me a headache plus some money
Lg should start making smartphones again
All they need to do is fixing their naming scheme 😂
I really enjoy your videos. Thanks
If you want an Android phone, you can always use some kind of rooted solution to force high quality audio through your phone.
It does require voiding warranty, however.
Just found your channel/videos. Beautiful score music. Reminds of vangelis or m83. Keep up the great content!
Very informative video! You're awesome! Thank you 😎👍🏻
Does Onkyo HF Player bypass the resampling and allow for bit-perfect playback on Android phones (when connected to a DAC) in the same way that USB Audio Player Pro does? I use Onkyo HF Player on my iPod Touch, so I'm familiar with the interface - but, I'm not against using a separate app on my Android device if it means bit-perfect playback. Thanks in advance.
very informative.. thank you very much
Update - I just tried downloading a few albums from Spotify onto my iPhone11 with the screen off and they completed just fine. There are multitudes of USB-c to Lightning adapters available and very small and compact.
You can also now transfer files directly through the Files app in IOS. And you are not crippled by the Android sample rate limitations. So it's about even now especially most hi end android phones don't have sd card slot anymore.
I believe it's not instant, but Spotify will eventually be put to sleep by iOS and prevent background downloads. If you're playing music in Spotify though, the downloads should continue as the OS will not suspend a running music app.
John, I’ve been using an iFi Hip-Dac with my iPhone XR connected using only the Apple Lighting Camera cable. Single cable solution and it works great. I bought the iBasso IT01 after watching your video and love them. Thanks!
What option do I have if I want to connect my phone into my DAC for charging? is there some sort of adapter.
helm bolt dac vs dragonfly red, which is better for android and tidal ? thanks
Thanks for your extremely detailed explanation, it is perfect! What I would suggest is to look at the absolutely interesting device (Xbox one / S / X) in scope of managing wireless hi-fi setup. You are right, all these cables annoying. I found that Xbox can receive music wirelessly (via wifi) from Iphone (Airplay 2) by using application called Airserver. So my home setup is next: iphone (deezer hifi) - Airplay 2 - Xbox One S - spdif - fostex hp-a3 - rca - marantz amplifier... Unfortunately my DAC is not showing me exact frequency and bitrate receiving from xbox after all interactions. Would be great to get your analysis on that. PS: this setup is oriented only to listen red-book quality from deezer hi-fi subscription.
You can get a USB-C to Lighting adapter which would be a lot more elegant than the solution used on the video.
Yes, BTR5 with LT-LT1 should do the trick. It’s just one cable and the DAC to the iPhone.
For more dongle hell, what happens if you also need to connect your USB c phone to power? I have seen USB splitters that have a dac, if you connect a dongle dac to the splitter will it be the dongle that does the conversion?
I would like to seek for an advice, because the dongle + audioquest dragonfly black is equivalent to the price of an entry level dap. should i go for that or the entry level dap like the hiby r3 pro and others? thank you
He forgot to mention that LG's own inbuilt music app can also bypass android's resampling, just like UAPP to play hi res content, including local files.
The problem is that is resampling all hi-res streaming tracks.
John is a great audiophile that gives the best advice!!
😊👏👏 outstanding as always. You know what whenever I have doubts as a learning Audiophile I come to your channel and 99% times I have found the solution. After seeing this I will stick to my IPhone, get a Dragonfly Black or use my BTR5 as a dongle DAC and get that contraption to connect it to my IPhone 😊👍
Looking for a high-end wired IEM for my LG V60 which has an ESS Sabre DAC and AMP?
So, I have the 2020 iPad and some nuraphones which have a separate cable that has a normal usb connection at the end. I have been looking at the iFi hip-dac and was wondering what I needed to have all this connected for hi-res audio?
Have a question do you have a video comparison Cd player and mp3 player?
Great Informative Video, you are a pleasure to watch, just subscribed
Hi. I have the dragonfly red dac connected to an ipad pro, with Apple music I’m able to see the dac color turn purple but with Tidal and Deezer even though I have Hifi selected they both stay in green color. Any suggestions? Thank you.
I’m using Dragonfly cobalt campfire audio Solaris with iOS sounds great after your recommendation cheers John.
I've been using an iFi DAC with an Android phone for about a year and a half. But I have started to resent having my phone plugged into this DAC, but on the other hand, I really love the sound of the DAC. So I am looking for a DAP with Tidal that I can use as a transport for the iFi. This video has got me thinking an iPod touch 7 is the way to go.
I am currently using an fiio btr5 connected via bluetooth to my android phone and the sound quality is honestly really good and it's more convenient than having my headphones plugged into my phone. Plus it can drive almost all headphones
Love your videos, specially when you recommend tracks for testing.
I think Tidal fixed the problem.
I am using a DragonFly Red and it lights magenta when playing offline Master Quality files directly from Tidal.
Awesome sound with my Shure SE846 IEMs.🙂
John is right, 24/48 for simplicity. Or hi res with dongle dac mess!! Im happy with my adv dongle dac 24/48. Oh yeah this is with iphone.
Might be interesting to try the Hidizs S9 or S8. They take a usb-c cable so you can use either usb-c to usb-c or lightning to usb-c. And it removes the most common breaking point on these things from the device, which should extend it's life.
I have android and I bought the apple usbc dac thinking that it would just work fine. However it only works at half volume. Usb audio player pro allowed me full access to the apple dac thankfully. And the apple usbc dac works well with iem's
LG has the best Android phone for Hi-Fi playback the headphone playback on the LG V60 is amazing

Bravo, great video
Hey John. How much did it cost you to import the Helm Bolt to Germany? I live in Spain and import duty here is ridiculously expensive. If they had a European distribution centre I think I might go for one based on your recommendation. I see the Dragonfly Black is now 75€ in Amazon. The new iPads use USB-C so no need for an extra adapter.
You Sir! Are an audio genius. We need more tricks and tips like that. Thank you for doing all the research and hard work. At least one person today learned something new.
Would anyone know a software solution for an Android phone as a streaming player and also download songs from a local storage device? So like Tidal but with no subscibtion and with a local media server at home.
Have anyone tried to play DSD256 natively to and ifi hip dac for example from an iPhone? I can only reproduce DSD up to DSD128 natively from my iPhone to my hip dac but, when trying to reproduce DSD256, every app I tried keeps converting the DSD256 to PCM
Wouldn't it then depend on the quality of headphones to resolve the improvement? Further MQA is proprietary (I thought) and then ties you to Tidal. The audio aspect in combination with a phone would cost nearly as much as a high quality fixed audio system. If portable then most hight quality headphones are open back which means a phone wouldn't be powerful enough to lift the Db above background noise. It just seems to me a super expensive way to simply listen outside.
Great video, new to the audio world. (Just entry level)
Got a Audeze Penrose, but it doesnt support LDAC, my phone does since LDAC is added since Android 8.
My Phone doesnt have a 3.5 jack either (Fold 3).
I can order a USB C to 3.5 like you mention, the helm bolt (Or probably will choose the cheaper option)
But im not really a fan of using dongles on the go, scared i destroy my port while its in my pocket or anything.
But i wouldnt mind it the other way around, a small dongle hanging on my 3.5 jack on the headphone.
Is this a thing? And what are the options?
So Phone's bluetooth > some dongle giving it to the 3.5 on the headset.
Or can i use some 180 degree USB C male to female to route the dongle to the back of the phone?
That way with a good fit it wont wiggle at the charging port
Does anyone know how I can get the new Apple lossless and high res into my home amp which has an onboard DAC? The amp has optical and digital coaxial inputs,
Reply and we can figure it out here to add to the discussion, I’ve been reading a lot about this lately.
Hi Mr. Darko!
I bought an external DAC (Hidizs S9pro) together with the Hidizs LT03, an OTG. It does not work properly: I have no hires audio. I guess, it is because I do not use the lightnig to camera adpater. Am I right? Do you really need to buy the (sort of expensive) lightnig to camera adapter, if you want to enjoy the best possible quality on iphone? (I have the old Xs by the way). Thanks for your help,Stephan
His sir. Appreciate your efforts. But can you help me to figure out a solution to be able to send hi res audio signals from the iphone into an ipad or vice versa. I would like to sample music. Im afrais that by looking into DAC and spdif devices i may be over complicating things: is the solution that im searching for already what we have in simple usb out [maybe to interface] to usb in? Its seems in this case, this would be a strait digital terminal from one device to the next. If not can you help me figure this out? Appreciate it.
Any usb c to usb a adapter will work with the (apple) lighning to usb cable?
Lotoo Paw offers a lightning to USB C short cable in black which works in place of the Apple camera connector. I use it with the Lotoo Paw S1 which is an excellent dongle DAC that does MQA.
so which one is better? helm bolt dac or ibasso usb dac?
A comment and question regarding Tidal HiRes output on Android phones, in particular, the Pixel 4a. Since this video was posted , Google issued a firmware update for the android Pixel 4a (on March 5, 2021) which no longer allows the use of USB Audio Player Pro on the Pixel 4a device. Hopefully, Google will fix this issue in the not too distant future allowing 4a owners to begin using USB Audio Player Pro once again. My question regards the use of Audio Quest’s DragonFly Black. I currently use the Dragonfly Black with a OTG Dragonfly Tail and even without using USB Audio Player Pro the light on the Dragonfly Black shows magenta, indicating it is play HiRes and MQA! Can this be true and how is this possible? Any answer to this question would be appreciated.
Do I really need a USB DAC-Amp dongle for my LG phone with Hi-Fi Quad DAC on board if I'm using HiBy Music Player software?
So is there any point in investing in a dongle DAC for your Android phone if your streaming music "on the go"? It seems to me that there isn't...
Ikko Zerda has a lightning variant, I used USB-C version and I've been loving the sound improvement on my phone.
I stream spoitfy music from a lenovo tablet through bluetooth to a pair of Genelec 8050B and i HATE the sound quality. Would this "tablet + HELM BOLT" sound better or at least as good as a "PI4 + a DAC hat"? I would also like it to be able to get advantage of spotify HIFI quality when it gets out.
On the iPhone side of things, I am using the DDHiFi dongle which is way smaller than the options you showed in the video and has great sound quality. DDHiFi makes the dongle in lightning and USB type C with 2.5 or 3.5mm connectors. They also recently came out with a 4.4mm dongle that has a secondary 2.5mm jack although, that version is a standard type dongle with a cable extension and is currently only available in USB type C.
The only thing I don't like about the DDHiFi is that it only does the same quality as the $10 Apple dongle.
@@Piercebotzon1996 What do you recommend?
Hi John! First off all - thank you for your amazing work you are doing for us! Im Big fan of your videos :)
I have one question - i dont have a lot of money for the streamer. For now im playing music audio from Apple TV 3 via AirPlay (optical to external dac) and i want to make a little upgrade. I tried Raspberry Pi with HifiBerry Digi Pro hat. That wasn’t for me - sound was very flat. Much worse than appletv.
So im thinking. Maybe i will buy some old iPhone (only for audio) and usb dongle. Then connect it to external dac via usb? And i will make some kind of audio station with all my music - tidal/roon/Spotify hifi in future. It will be better than Sonos connect, chromecast audio etc. In terms of sound quality?
Thank you :)
Unless your phone is really, really cheap, iirc a premium sample rate version of the Chromecast would do the same quality of music, and be more convenient, for possibly cheaper..
What are your views on bluetooth dacs like fiio btr series
But, how do you rate using the "Periodic Audio Rhodium" dongle {for both OS & iOS}-?
Hi ! I had been folow You since I found HD sound ...
What do You think about HD pleyers... Like HiBy R5 Gen 2 ?
USB Player Pro a mayor discovery even at streaming audio to home and chromecast audio, the finnese, the detail, the improvement of the same system I used to hear is remarcable I still dont understand why since this is for the usb android limitations to a dac adaptor. But anyway hank you very much. I am happier than If I had used, as it is supposed to be. Thrilled!!
Nice to know. I'm gonna purchase it now. Thanks!
There are new really small USBC to lightning adaptors for iPhone which hidizs makes. Only real drawback I see for iPhone now is not having support for LDAC, APTX, APTX HD. which is a real deal breaker if you have a bluetooth dac like the qudelix5k.
Great video! I have one question through. I have Sony wh1000xm4 and as far as I know they already have internal dac and would it make any difference if I were to buy dragonfly black dac to use those headphones in wired mode? I use those headphones in wired mode mostly while using MacBook or windows pc.
nope, I have those headphones too and the magic happens when is conected via bluetooth, I tried with Dragonfly red and wired connection but sound is lame IMO, but I tried with dragonfly red + audio technica M50X and the result is much better, this DAC improves sound a lot in this case
I use the adv dongle dac for my iphone happy with it!
Does Dragonfly do the same job that something a few bigger like iFi Hip-dac?
Can we have an updated video on this since we have iphones with C type ports now. Im really excited to know ways i can use my iphone to listen to hi res music
Hi. I want to know if listening over the sony XM3 with LDAC enabled sounds significantly worst than when using the Helm bolt. I have the XM4 and to me they sound fantastic when paired with LDAC, but I have never tried an actual dac, so I am interested in the Helm bolt because I love Tidal.
Yes, there's definitely an improvement in using a dongle dac instead of Bluetooth. Bear in mind however that you need to wire your headphones into the dac so you lose the convenience of wireless headphones.
so, on my Note 10+, the screen says Qobuz is sending me 24/96. but youre saying my phone only passes me 24/48 ?
is that for both wired & wireless? my Mosconi DSP is able to rcv 24/96 bluetooth.
does lightning to type-c OTG downsample or upsample the transfer from iphone?
Can somebody explain please. Spotify is leaving Russia, so I am returning to apple music again, and this time I want to try out wired lossless. I've got broken iphone 7(can not connect wired headphones, port works only for charging) and I ve got my daily driver redmi note 7. I has a headphone jack and usb-c port.
Right now I want to target basic usual lossless which is 24/48. With iPhone it is pretty straitforward - lightning dongle to headphone jack.
But what is with android? Am I good to go with built in headphone jack to get 24/48 or do I still need to use some kind of usb-c to 3,5 jack dac?
I've checked and over bluetooth my phone supports apx and alack, but I do not have bluetooth headphones that support these formats.
How to check if built in headphone jack can provide 24/48? Where I should look?
I have Xiaomi Mi A3 Android phone and it has 3.5 mm jack. Do I still need DAC dongle for better music/audio experience?
Have anybody tried the hilidac beam2?
I’d really love your thoughts. Thanks!
What happens in terms of compression, when I cast CZcams music to an Xbox series x?
Isn’t there a Lighting solution nowadays that Helm made or some other manufacturer?
For recording what is best ? Iphone or smartphone ? Is there a difference in quality ? Thx
can i use one of these dongle dacs and wired headphones, while at the same time using bluetooth headphones paired to the android/iOS?
No, usually the Bluetooth takes priority, but I think you can override that from Developer Settings. In either case only one audio route will work at a time, not both.
Can the Dragonfly dac drive my 64omh Sennheiser hd280 pro headphones, I am considering getting one to use with my old iPhone 11, I mainly use Spotify and Apple Music set to there highest quality audio formats, also what about eq setting, will the Spotify and Apple musics native built-in eq still work
There's one problem i have. How do i transfer around 300+ playlist in my itunes library to an android device. That is without working on it for months?
Hi John, Hope you are doing great. I think this video needs an update. I recently bought a Helm Bolt. The package says "plug n play". I am using Samsung Galaxy S10 and Tidal, and with Helm Bolt I get MQA, indicated by the purple light. I did install the USB Audio Player Pro and then uninstalled it soon after. Still it is working fine with MQA content on Tidal. Has the recent Android update(s) removed the resampling feature? Or is it with few specific Android phones that can do away with USB Audio Player Pro? I haven't got the answer yet. Will look for it. May be this update can be included in your video. Thanks for everything. You are awesome!

My S10+ ha a 3.5mm jack but I use the type-c dongle as it has a dac on the dongle,.
Could you kindly do a redo on this it’s a few yes later what has changed and what’s to come iphone 15
On the Iphone side, instead of buying the dongle, DAC and a pair of good wired headphone. Would the new wireless Apple Airpod Max headphone and apple music lossless format achieve the same thing?
Thanks for the interesting video. If I would use an iBasso DC02, what kind headphones would you recommend. Currently I'm using the Sony WH-1000X M3 headphones. But if I would decided to use a DAC do I need special headphones for that?
With my XM4s, the wireless mode sounds far better to me than using the wired mode, even plugged into my Modi 3. The DSP correction is far more effective in correcting the frequency response than a DAC in my experience
Have 1000X M3, but when wired they sound terrible. Try wire alternative the 1A m2 from Sony. In general if the headphones are wireless then no extra DAC should be used. If you want to squeeze the most of 1000x m3, check whereas LDAC codec is active (mostly available on Android 7 and up phones). But wireless is not for the MASTER, just use HiFi, Bluetooth doesn't have enough bandwidth to carry 1,4 Mbit of data (normal CD).
Yes, they are called ordinary headphones (the kind with a wire) 😉

Is there a device that can convert it to a smooth analogue signal ?
If you want to use an iPhone as your daily, I recommend you the ddHifi TC28i adapter. I does the same as the Apple OTG adapter except charging. But the charging isn’t necessary, if you use a dongle DAC! I’m on Apple Music with a ddHifi TC44B and the adapter. Nice and tiny package for on the go!
You nailed that info. Thank you
Hi John, and people. I've a DragonFly black. Is the USB tail really matter? I have one from Ugreen, not cheap but not "audiophile". What do you think?
I don't think the usb connection cable really matters since it's only transporting data, the whole processing takes place in the dragonfly and your phone after all
I love your videos. I am switching from an iPhone to the LG V40, what apps do I need to make my listening experience better? I some 24 bit music that I’ve downloaded and I’m going transfer to the phone.
Greg,
You should seriously consider Poweramp. It's the app I've been using for YEARS. It somehow makes everything sound better than the other competitors do, and doesn't cost much either. It also has EQ'ing options, and a Hi-Res Output option as well for 24-bit music (see Output Settings in Audio section of Settings). It also has a great interface, and lots of cool options too, including being able to save your settings (export/import) to transfer over to future phones.
play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.maxmpz.audioplayer&hl=en_US&gl=US
You also need the Unlocker app, which you can get here (install it AFTER the one above):
play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.maxmpz.audioplayer.unlock&hl=en_US&gl=US
I use poweramp too, very good app!
Hi John, Thanks for a great channel and really opening my ears(?) to the hidden audiophile in myself. Recently, Amazon Music Unlimited in the UK added HD as a free inclusive part of the package which got me to dig out my Chord Mojo and attach it to my aging OnePlus 5 and see how things sounded. After some small tinkering, I can now see (some) Ultra HD tracks (Coldplay - Clocks, from A Rush of Blood to the Head) for example reporting as 24 bit and 192 kHz in the Android based app and the Mojo shows a lovely blue 192 kHz from its coloured glass on/off control bead/ball. In this video, around 10:26 there is mention of vanilla android resampling at 48 kHz - and this ties in with what I see with youtube streamed content. I assume though that the Amazon music HD app must be performing some USB bypass magic along the lines of what USB Audio Player Pro does. I'd be interested to know if Amazon Music HD is available in Berlin now and if you'd tried it with something like your LG V40 if you still have it? Keep up the great content. Many thanks
I really dislike all this labels people in western countries are alway boxing people in, but i ve alway been into high quality audiot because since my young years many acquaintances were producing trance and techno music so i learn a bit about sampling mixing normalizing tracks so i could really notice the quality of the music on napster or my zune back in those days. this is my set up, which I will stay for many years to come my MIS 13 inch laptop lg external cd drive to convert my cds a pirated version of traktor that is giving me loads of problems with my korg nano controler, just replaced my native instruments audio 2 with arturia minifuse 1, my dynaudio bmamkii monitors, soulseek to download flac music, ultrasone dj1 pro, rha 750 lg v30 to drive those high impedence rha 750 and ultrasone phones so do i need more than this NO..... What I m trying to say is that do you need an 8k mcintosh amplifier no you dont do you need a 1000 amplifier no you dont, my set up is budget and works amazing..
On the LG phones it is imperative that you use the Hi Fi status lg app so the phone can recognize the impedance on the IEM or head phone and activate the hi fi quad dac along with a player that has the hability to get the best audio out of my flacs and to equalize because those rha 750 which are amazing but they need to be equalize because they are very very bright IEMs amd used onkyo HF player and black player...

I’ve heard that Bluetooth absolutely butchers sound quality. I would stick with wired if you want hifi audio.
If you want high sound quality, stay away from Bluetooth. Bluetooth is great for convenience but it is not for hi res files or for sound quality.
Hope someone can help. I´m using some PreSonus speakers conected do my old macpro. Using a dac like dragonfly or Helm Bolt connect to the macpro, then connected to the speakers will improve the sound quality? or the improvement will only be felt on headphones?
Thanks guys.
Don't know about the helm bolt but the dragonfly can be used as a preamp into powered monitors. I've used it into mackie Mr6 mk3s and jbl lsr 305s. It is designed to work as headphones amp or preamp. Dragonfly dacs sound very good . Hope this helps
You will have a significant improvement in sound quality by using a DAC like the Dragonfly versus a 3.5mm headphone cable to the RCA inputs on the PreSonus speakers.
This video should watch everyone before making Any kind of audiophile related Decision, You did a great job 👌
If high quality sound and convenience is what is important to you, use your iphone with the adapter
and a dragonfly cobalt...simple, maintenance free, no app issues...handled and done.
Just got an iBasso DC03 to use with Samsung Note 9 but it only works after restarting phone with it plugged in. If I unplug it then it won't work again. Same with my tablet and Windows PC.
Do you also need a better headphones or IEMs to bring out the full capability of this DAC?
All DACs will make bad gear sound a little better, and good gear sound a lot better (if the DAC in question is better than the older one).
