  • The Ford Mustang Mach-E GT Performance Edition ($90,680 in Canada as specced, $59,900 USD starting) is able to put a strong 480 horsepower and 634 lb-ft of torque to all four wheels. It has a claimed 0-60 time of 3.5 seconds and a 435 km range on a full charge. This is the beefiest and baddest of all Mach-E Mustangs - but it has the price tag to match. Thomas and James dive in to see what this AWD electric Mustang has to offer. We hope you enjoy the episode. Subscribe!!

I think that driving range should be measured like fuel economy, but instead of city/highway/combined mpg, do warm/cold/combined range in distance. Have the warm test be in sub optimal conditions and the cold test be 32F or below to be fair to everyone in every climate

    • @swaroopajit
      @swaroopajit Před 2 lety +22

The amount of money it would take to make a temperature controlled test facility like that probably puts it out of the minds of manufacturers. And also keep in mind the speed at which the car is driven does affect the range, so the testing would now be a set of warm highway, cold highway, warm city, and cold city.

This is what happens when you have a narrow focus on something like 0-60 and decide that it's the only metric that matters. I am so glad you addressed the "5 second rule" as the majority of reviewers gloss right over and it's a really big deal to a performance enthusiast (aka the Mustangs target demographic).

Does Ford make a profit on the Mach-E?
If the COVID-19 pandemic wasn't hard enough on automakers, they're now being pummeled with skyrocketing prices for materials. The prices of raw materials have increased so dramatically that the Ford Mustang Mach-E is no longer profitable.Jun 16, 2022. This is not sustainable for Ford as they are currently $138 billion U.S. dollars in debt 2022. Ford Motor cash on hand for the quarter ending June 30, 2022 was $36.700B, a 10.57% decline year-over-year. Ford Motor cash on hand for 2021 was $49.593B, a 0.74% decline from 2020.

I have a GT PE, and you're right, it's not worth the upcharge vs a Premium or something like the EV6/Ionic in pure $$$ ROI. But, is any "performance" trim period (not limited to just EVs)? It feels kind of bizarre to hear you guys say those words out loud, and then talk up the GT500 which is even more expensive than a GT PE and only slightly faster to 60 in perfect conditions... Which is faster in the snow? Which is more confident in the rain? Which would you rather drive 1000 miles if you can't wear ear plugs and have to pay for fuel? Is a GT500 really $35k (USD) better than a GT anywhere other than a track?
The 5s thing sucks, it shouldn't be there. Does it matter 95% of the time? No. The car is dangerously quick at any speed south of 80mph. It's honestly scary how quickly you can go from 30->70 mph.
Comments around DCFC infrastructure might be valid in CA, I don't know. It's not like that in the US, in settled areas. Yeah, the infrastructure sucks, it absolutely needs to get better. It sucks even more when you get off major travel corridors, but that is a locale specific problem. For most people, in most cases, it is fine. If you drive long distance a lot, especially to the hinterlands, it totally makes sense that an EV isn't the right solution for you. But is a 13MPG GT500 a better solution? The point of this car, like every other performance trim, is to push the envelop, and put a smile on your face. It is more of a pure performance compromise in great weather compared to something like the GT500, but as a four door performance wagon I'm not sure that's the right target either. If you have the space and budget to have a bunch of cars, the GT PE probably doesn't make sense if the goal is to have specialist workhorses, but that's not how the majority of consumers prioritize their disposable income. Obviously, I'm biased here, but I also enjoy having space for 4 adults comfortably, space in the back for my kit, and being able to walk anything that doesn't have a Tesla badge from the light in any weather :).
Keep up the great work. There are very few channels where I will click on every video with the confidence that no matter what, I will learn something, and be entertained. Kudos.

@@JCizzleSoCal Thx - yeah my first Tesla.. It’s such a better performer than the Mach E GT by literally every measure. Now, perhaps unfair to a degree as one is a sedan and one is a SUV. - but even in terms of tech, charging, handling - I did drop my 3 1.2 on Novitec springs, but things like comfort, sound system, the Tesla is ahead IMO.

Magnaride sucks for repair costs and long term reliability so there's that.
The thunk you are feeling on the stop and go is also a calibration and preload issue with the single speed and electric motor coupling if I were to guess between the multiple motors.

The best way to feel the weight of a car is to drive it on loose snow. When I drove a Q7 for the first time on snow with no driver aids on, I really felt that "Hey, even if I press the brakes right now as I'm going 35 km/h sideways, I will still slide 15 meters sideways with no control ".
Had I not done that I would've probably continued driving heavy cars like SUVs on slippery surfaces like a Golf.

I rented a Mach-E GT on Turo. Was not very impressed overall. I agree that the GT version doesn’t feel like it’s worth the extra money. I actually like the 2022 Model Y better although both have a firmer/sportier ride. I think I’d probably get the Ioniq 5 over both.

Speaking about charging points, I have a 2022 Mach E Premium with the standard battery and not sure if it is RWD or AWD since I didn’t ask nor did I care about that part since I don’t off-road or go to the mountains. Anyways, to get to the point, my biggest issue is people vandalizing charging points such as cutting the cable which I saw happen at a Northern Kaiser Permanente Hospital at three charging points.

That five second limit is a bummer for only really fast highway speeds, but I hope Ford removes it via OTA once they get less scared of the battery hit/health.

Hmmm. I like a lot of their videos. I don't always agree and this is one I can't agree with. Thomas is trying to make his case but offering very little logic, and James seems to be struggling to affirm him but really just not wanting to disagree. I've had my GTPE since November and it's the best car I've ever had or driven. And that's a lot of cars. I also have a 2016 Mustang GT supercharged making 900 rwhp, which is very scary fun. This is super composed fun. I throw this one around curves at full throttle and never feel like all 4 wheels are going to come loose. The rear wheels kick out giving just a little oversteer and the front motors just keep pulling it around the curve. It's amazing. It's heavy but it feels so nimble to me. The magneride is fantastic. The only two gripes I can see anyone having are 1) 5 second limit truly sucks, and 2) no electronic tilting telescoping steering. Maybe the absence of cooled seats but most women hate them because I think it feels like aunt Flow is visiting. I tested a premium AWD for a while and it did not come compare to the GT at all, in handling or speed. I almost wanted to cancel my GT order after getting out of my Mustang and into the premium. I'm so glad I didn't. The Mach-E GT is just a blast and so practical. That said, it is not my road trip car. I have a 40 amp charger in my garage amd always leave on a full charge. I never use more than 50% of the battery.
