    I unboxed funky ultralight backpacking gear from a mystery box, and then took it backpacking! This is the third unboxing of ultralight and cottage brand gear I have done with Garage Grown Gear, and this time Lloyd (the CEO) and his team packed a mystery box of full of wild, wacky and unique ultralight backpacking accessories and luxury items for me to try! Of course I had to take all this weird gear backpacking right away, and on my trip I discovered that some of this gear honestly proved to not be that weird at all. Actually most of it was quite practical, and a few items I truly loved and are definitely staying in my pack permanently! Watch the video to see the adventure, and which gear I loved the most - plus the one thing I did not like at all. 👀

    I'd like to see a "finding backpacking gear in unexpected places" video. Harbor freight, Hardware stores, grocery stores, a fabric shop and so on. It would be a great way to talk budget / last minute gear as well as go into how a lot of the tiny garage grown gear companies got started.

      I tried the Vaucluse ventilation piece on a backpacking trip to Cumberland island that was quite hot. I had the same experience. I had to be super careful taking it off and putting it on. I did like having the pack off my back a bit but when it comes undone it would stab me in the back.

    15:56 there’s a new toxic lookalike in the west. An experienced elder morel forager died in missoula. The deaths in Bozeman were due to undercooking & irresponsible people, BUT the missoula incident was a lookalike. I’m out until we have guidance on the difference. Other parts of the US have less easy to ID morels. Super duper happy she is taking it home, pls always have someone confirm your haul!!! I m anxious but since this video posted I’m assuming it was a good morel lol

    Mushroom picking tip: cut off the base of the stem with dirt before you bag it up, so you don't get dirt all over your morels! It's probably best practice to just cut/pinch the stem at ground level to pick it, leaving the base in place, but long-term studies haven't really shown one method to be better than the other at this point (that I'm aware of). Nice find, they're my favorite.

    • @kellyrhoads5629
      @kellyrhoads5629 Pƙed 15 dny +1

      Agree. Once that dirt or sand gets in the mushroom cap it’s very difficult to clean it out and you will be eating the grit. Great to find that mushroom!

    • @Baysha1000
      @Baysha1000 Pƙed 15 dny +2

      Per our mycologists, it's best practice to pick the whole mushroom including the base because in many mushrooms (such as Amanitas) the main features for distinguishing between an edible and poisonous species are on the base (it probably doesn't matter in morels though). Source: we Czechs are probably the most passionate mushroom foragers in the world, it's pretty much a national sport - and we forage an insane variety of species including several Amanitas (very tasty!) so articles by mycologists are pretty much a constant presence in the media during summer and fall.
      Agree with cleaning off the dirt right away, that's gonna be impossible to get off after it's been carried around for two days.

      Do a google search for National Forests in your state. See if any have a Wilderness. Google that wilderness for backpacking. The National Forest web site has a plethora of general information how these topics.
      For instance I live in Washington state. I took a road atlas and I chose Ohio. Never been to that state. They have Wayne National Forest. So I googled Wayne National Forest and one of the items that had a hyper link to was hiking. Clicked on that and I found Wildcat Hollow trail 17.5 miles for backpacking. Less than 5 minutes I already have a destination to look into. Call the Athens District ranger station will help gather more information about the trail. This also gives me something to google which 10 seconds later I had a list of sites that had information including Alltrails.
      3 things to keep in mind. Difficulty, mileage, and weather. If you're new to backpacking keep your difficulty low and mileage low (4-6 miles) until you're ready to try more challenging terrain and mileage. Don't jump from 4 to 15 miles. Try 4 then maybe 8 then 12 miles and so on. Weather is something that can't be controlled so you need to learn how to deal with inclement weather. Basically timing is one way of dealing with it. If you can time the weather so it is coming in when you are back at the trailhead is one way of dealing with it but still get out (may not be out as long as you like but you got out). At the same time not have to deal with it.

    I'm not sure Darwin was thinking, "Hey guys, let's make a really cute pot," but I guess that's what he got 😂 I like that pot because of the wooden handle on the lid. I have a Toakes 750ml, and I'm always forgetting to pull that teeny little tab on the lid before I boil my water, so the wooden one would be helpful. I like the bail too, I do occasionally cook over a fire.

    When you see one morel, you often find more
I have found one lonely singleton though. When you harvest, cut or pinch off at the stem. That leaves enough to come back, if not this season, the next. Also, when you soak it at home, dump the water where they are likely to grow. I dumped the water from some and two years later, there are a bunch where they had never been before. Great video, always love seeing others out in nature when I can’t get out there myself.

      The "leaving enough for the mushroom to regrow" is just a myth. The mushroom is just a fruiting part, it's going to die off anyway. The mycelium is the actual body of the fungus and it's spread over many square meters (or in some cases, even acres). It's gonna grow tens or hundreds more mushrooms, all in different places.
      It's like saying that when you're picking an apple off the tree you need to leave the stem so that it will fruit again. The important part for growing more apples is the tree, not the apple fruit. Same with mushrooms except you can't see the "tree" because it's underground.

    As another very sweaty human being, I swear by packs with ventilation. I'm sure you know that they make packs with built in ventilation, which is usually mesh and far more breathable than the plastic one. But I will say devices like that are great because they open. Up so many more possibilities for packs.

    Fantastic video! The UL sandals are amazing for the weight, don't use them for water crossings, just for camp or for mid day stops to air out your feet. The zero pump however doesn't have enough air pressure to fully inflate an air mattress if you like it firm, so you have to add a few breaths in. The tiny2x air pump solves that, and also has a long lasting lantern.

    The RovyVon light is definitely a winner. There is a little learning curve with the button combinations to turn it on and cycle through the modes, but it's a solid piece of gear in my kit.
    I tried to like the Mayfly sandals, but the lack of real traction was a deal breaker for me.
    I have one of those Brautigam spoons (not the spork) on my GGG wishlist. I've already got a decent spoon, but if family members are interested in getting me a gift, they can get me one of those.
    I've tried those toothpaste tabs and they are not for me. I love the concept, but my teeth didn't feel clean after using them. I also use a folding travel toothbrush that I like better than those weird ones from GGG.

    It should be noted that the weight on the Flextail Zero pump does NOT include either the battery or valve adapter. They've completely plastered the marketing material with the 1.2oz (35g) weight despite only be able to achieve that as little more that a paperweight in your pack lol. I believe it's about the same weight as their tiny pump x (model with out the lantern) by the time it's got a battery in it. Albeit with a more convenient form factor, but a much higher price tag.

I found a whole bunch of the lookalikes during a hike once. It was very cool to dissect one and do the microscope and spore printing.
    I plan to make a pair of Mayflies to use as campsite shoes. But I'm going to add traction tape to the bottom so I don't break my ass. 😅 That Evolutionkettle just went on my future purchases list! It'd be easy to hanv over a fire if I needed. I'm just not sure about the wooden lid handle. Seems counterintuitive to the bail feature. đŸ€”
