    1 rule for anyone on a bike when your on a trail with hikers. Stop being such assholes. These trails were not built for you. We are not on your personal road, we are here to share it. I'm off to the side, you can go to the opposite side. You don't need to go flying past it at max speed in the middle of the trail inches away from me, and if we move out of your way, at the very least give us a nod. We are being courteous to you for getting out of the way, BECAUSE WE SHARE THE TRAIL.

    If I slobber in my sleep, it means I slept very soundly which is a GOOD thing!!! I prefer to use three 700ml smart water bottles instead of two 1000ml bottles. This way, I can have one on my shoulder strap and one in each side pocket. When I finish the one on my shoulder strap, I just swap it out for a full one from a side pocket. I don't have the same back pack that you carried, but I think the 700ml bottle would not have been so in your face. I agree...Nalgene needs to make bottles in this size. I love taking a nalgene in cold weather so I can fill it with hot water to keep my feet warm at night.

    Windscreen looks promising. We used to use a 1 Lb. Coffee can around our Svea 123 White Gas Stoves the added heat pressurizes the stove better, the plastic lid insulates the stove from the snow, dirt, ground, tabletop. The old Svea 123 fits right inside a 1 Lb can! I think I still have one at my parent's house from about 40 years ago! I use propane stoves now, but in a pinch, the old Svea 123 works like a champ!

    I wouldn't go on the advice of anything Dan Becker - he flip flops all the time, and doesn't really have the tenured experience. He does a phenomenal job with the content, and hos studio work - the camera and the public appear to like him; he's funny, amusing, and appears to have found a niche market for himself in this world - but me personally as 35+ year outdoor enthusiast - I cant take him serious - but he's entertaining and has a great stage/ camera presence.

    I've got a jetboil minimo 😍 and I absolutely LOVE IT. It has a shorter wider pot so that I can easily eat out of it and the valve is designed so thst you can actually adjust the flame to actually cook with it as opposed to simply boiling water. I can fry eggs and bacon or simmer a stew or soup it is extremely versatile (And so far knock on wood after 3+ years my peizo still works great 🤞) to me it is the ultimate backpack/camp stove.

    The sunglass "arms" are commonly known as temples or bows. The pill bottle kit is a good one. For years, I have repurposed expired ATM/credit cards. I trimmed out an "H" shape to use as a thread wrap & ear phone storage; Make a separate snip-slot on 1 edge for the tail end keeper. I have a card w/ sports tape & repair tape, too. These won't particularly fit into the bottle, but they are flat. I also have fashioned a windscreen from dollar store roasting pans; my anchoring for it was iffy, I'll copy your solution. Thnx.

    Kind of disagree with the "don't wander off trail" part. Granted, I live in an area, where there aren't many trails at all and most of our hiking is back country without trails in the first place. But even when I'm in Norway I leave the trails quite a lot, for example to connect a day hike trail with another day hike trail for my longer multi-day hikes. I do however see your point, and if it's possible to use a trail, use it! Oh and regarding what to say to people, quite a lot of times when I come down a mountain and there was something up there I'd wish I'd known before (like some sketchy rocks or ice) and I see people go up I'll ask them if they've been here before and if not just tell them about the sketchy place and how I've managed to get up/down it. But that's something we do here a lot, so other hikers will also tell me "hey, just so you know there's still snow up there with some ice. But it's super easy with spikes, just looks sketchy " or something along the lines. Again we don't have trails here, so that info is amazing to have, especially from somebody who just was at that spot

    Thanks for the great tutorial, Miranda! I have a question about the windscreen. Could you not just include that flap at the bottom in the initial cut-out, instead of adding it on later? As to the sewing machine issue, note that some public libraries have “Maker Spaces,” where you can use a sewing machine for only the cost of a library card, which are usually free. Or borrow a sewing machine from a friend.

  • @paulrevere2379
    @paulrevere2379 Před dnem

    Never heard the myth of camping anywhere. Not sure I ever met anyone with that notion. However, there is a Very common problem that would kinda fit into the myth category: campsites indicated by apps. A usual rule which applies to All PCT hikers and a large proportion of trails in Washington State is this: No camping within proximity of the trail (100 ft I think). Knowledgeable, experienced Rangers have pointed out to me that this is even a violation of LNT principles. The basic (unwritten) rule is to camp where people on trail don't see your campsite any more than they have to see litter on trail, if possible anyway. Now there are some exceptions for developed campsites. These typically have such things as permanent signs, steel fire rings and sometimes bearproof lockers, but a "campsite" marked on an app is not legit, not kosher when right next to the trail in most cases, so plz stop using these, and no it's not ok just because "everyone else does it"

  • @paulrevere2379

    Survival skills for backpacking is a lot like knowing how to make use of a spare tire, or even having one with your car. You can be a "successful" driver for decades and never have even basic tire changing skills let alone how to address issues like a busted radiator in the middle of hot nowhere. But once in a great while a hiker/driver does end up in a situation where having key skills literally becomes an issue of life and death. Let me emphasize RARE, but this is not the same as never. Still, survival skills, like car fix-it skills does provide immense peace of mind if you put in the effort to get them. Until that time, if ever, you can still go out and hike to your hearts content, but maybe not too deep and too alone for too long in a too remote of a wilderness just to be on the safe side.

    How did you rip a nylofume liner? that's wild. I have never once had a failure and I am anything but gentle on my gear. In fact I used the same liner for two separate section hikes totaling around 700 miles and it never got even a pinhole in it. I know plenty of people that make do with trash bags which are vastly more delicate than nylofume. Even trash compactor bags are weaker. What's more your silpoly bag isn't odor proof, nylofume is as long as your closure method is secure. give nylofume another try, I maintain it's by far the best option for water proofing there is. Or I guess If you are really concerned about durability get a dyneema liner, it will be lighter than your silpoly and if properly seam sealed it will be almost odor proof.

    Some useful additions to the repair kit. For sewing really tough material (pack, shoes, et cetera) a small sewing awl is almost essential. No specialty store is needed. Just take an old small screwdriver from an eyeglass repair kit and sharpen it to a point any way you can (file, stone, whatever) A tube of chapstick style lip balm is also useful. Needles tend to rust in many outdoor environments so give it a swipe. Got a sticky zipper that isn't actually broken or tough to work in damp/freezing conditions? Give that zipper a quick coat of chapstick and watch it work better and last longer.

  • @paulrevere2379
    @paulrevere2379 Před 2 dny

    Not a super big thing just yet, but a growing concern is the tendency of some to be so fixated on smartphone tech that this happens: one hiker to a second hiker coming the other way: Hi Second hiker: Hi, how are you? One hiker: Thanks for asking, I'm ok but I'm wondering about the status of the next water coming up from where you just came. Second hiker: Don't you have the app? Ahhh! please don't be this person. That is so wrong of an answer in every possible way. If you are clueless and dependent on apps fine, just say sorry, I'm clueless and can't help you. Asking this kind of question on trail is almost as old as hiking itself, an older and still relevent part of trail culture. It's about getting near realtime confirmation of important info which does NOT remain constant. It's also about basic human interaction. Some people go out in nature to get a much needed break from all the tech overload for one thing. Another issue is the basically bad idea to rely on this kind of tech, and extra bad to encourage others to rely on it. As for the desire some have for solitude that's fine, but go pick the right time and trail for it instead of being the one thinking you are more special than everyone else on a shared trail as if to say, "how dare you take up a minute of my time." That kind of rudeness is totally not cool.
