  • Motorcycle Adventurer July Behl dropped by the Bike Shed to tell us about his latest travels on his trusty BMW nineT Scrambler.
    We spotted the stickers and had to have a chat. Off the cuff and impromptu we just thrust a camera in July's face and captured this brief snapshot of his trip. Hopefully we can blow the froth off a few beers next time he's in and hear tall tales from the saddle.

    Love that people are doing trips like this on all sorts of bikes.

    The guy here is obviously very sorted and clearly a better rider than I'll ever be.!
    His mods to the bike, crashbars, sump-guards etc, all eminently sensible..
    But.. Love his craic and the e-bay sticker collection.. that was really cool.

      Hi James, I write for a magazine called Rust Sports and they've covered my journey till Central America. The South American bit will be covered in the upcoming issues. I'm hoping to write a book and hopefully that'll give you an insight into my trip. In the meantime, you can keep a lookout on my Facebook and Instagram pages. Thanks ever so much for your interest. Cheers!

    I just picked up the 2017 and am planning a trip from the Canadian border down the 101 along the coast to the mexico border. Everybody says I should have gotten a GS but I love the way this bike feels. I'm replacing the rear shock immediately and I have the rack you have that broke so I may be building my own to be stronger before I go. There will be some offroad parts of the trip for sure.

    • @julyreshebehl5502
      @julyreshebehl5502 Před 6 lety +1

      It's a very competent bike and with upgraded suspension, even more capable. Yes, that rack's a waste of money (IMHO) and was a right pain in the backside on the trip. I'd go for an alternative, as the clamps that attach under the seat broke multiple times as well. Good luck on your trip and keep us posted. Cheers!

      I have to give you huge props for taking a bike like this on a trip like that. I'm going with a single seat and building a new rack to hold a good amount of weight. I'm a minimalist so I'll be traveling with the bare minimum of luggage. I'm on the R Nine T Forums as TwoShoes but I just scored a nice camera so I'll be taking some video and photos along the way.

    • @julyreshebehl5502
      @julyreshebehl5502 Před 6 lety

      Sounds good Chris. I'd suggest testing the rack off road with the weight you're going to carry, as it'll save you from any potential roadside welding adventures.

      I routinely ride 101 from my home in SF to my buddies place in Seattle. Amazing ride, but watch out for cops (especially CHP and the Oregon cops in general) in all the small towns scattered along the way; I literally got a ticket this weekend in Eureka. The speed limit can change abruptly from 70 to 35, and that's when you'll likely meet a LEO eager to give you a souvenir. Once in/around SF you'd be better off taking HWY 1 the remainder of the way since 101 turns into a genuine highway. There's a section of 1 south of Monterey that's washed out, but you can get around it if you're willing to ride some dirt. Once back on 1 you'll be rewarded with some of the best riding in North America, especially if you love twisty roads. Cheers.

    I think the R nine T GS would make a great cross continental traveller, if longer travel suspension was fitted. At 115 bhp it’s also got great torque. Yes, you’d also need to take extra fuel.

    I am so impressed July. Most reviews say it is not a long distance bike. Did you replace the seat ( most recommend replacing the standard seat for a more padded version) Thanks for the post. Really an eye opener.

    excellent off road or overland bike. the BMW touring clubs in Australia during the 70s used r75/5 to go into the Australian interior and they performed magnificently. These will do the same. They are still taking these old and new Beemers to places like Cape York, the Canning stock route etc. The None T will be a great off road bike with certain limitations

    Mine's a K1300S. You don't want to venture far from a dirt road, at most. It's a tarmac bike but it's got 110,000 kms on it. I ride to MotoGP in Phillip island most years and for me that's 2,000 kms one way but it's been further.
