Sony A7s III APSC Mode and Clear Image Zoom
Vložit
- čas přidán 16. 10. 2020
- The Sony A7s III can only use APSC mode in 1080p but you can use clear image zoom in 4k up to 60 fps to film with apsc lenses like the Sirui 50mm anamorphic or 35mm anamorphic. The great thing about using clear image zoom on the A7sIII is that you can use most APSC lenses or get zoom in just a little bit farther with very little quality loss. I compare clear image zoom with cropping and zooming in in post to show you how to get the most out of your Sony A7sIII and apsc lenses.

Another banger video! Man it was cool that you got the ice falling! Sweet. Using the shutter for video record.....does it take photos with the shutter button in photo modes when you have it set for recording video?
Yes it operates as the shutter button in photo mode. It was unbelievable to be there and capture it. I have been here so many times and always just missed the large calving events like this...
Is there any way to use a custom button as a shortcut to go straight to 1.5x back and forward?
@@ajrc1987 yes
Dude that glacier calving during your video!!!! AMazing and priceless!!!
right???
You picked an awesome location. Right place, right timing.
Exactly right!!
Ice falls from Glacier.. People who are not from Alaska: That's Awesome!!! Man from Alaska trying to record a video: Shhhh!!! lol
ROFL thats about right... 😂
This was great Jake. Thank you sir.
You’re welcome! Cheers.
So jealous that you have that wonderful location so close and readily available. Great video.
Thanks Paul!!
Another great video Jake. Just a question, how did you change the shutter button to become the movie record button ..??? Richard
I will show in my settings and setup video coming soon!!
@@JakeSloan Thanks mate
Hi Jake, dumb question, does the clear image zoom feature comporomise capture quality? Thank you!
It does a bit but not a massive amount
Great video Jake 👊🏻😎
Thanks bro
Thank you! didn't know much about clear image zoom, this is pretty cool. Outside of already owning ASPC lenses, is there another benefit as to why one would buy it if you are starting out and have a full frame, besides $$$?
Glad to have helped!! You only really need full frame if you plan to do lots of really wide stuff or lots of really low light stuff
Those ice drops are amazing!
agreed
Switching systems and will start out mostly with APSC lenses for the A7Siii. Is it possible to use an APSC lens (like the 16-55 2.8) in 1080, aps-c mode and shoot 120fps?
You can!
@@JakeSloan Great. Very little info on the 1080 side. Can't afford the storage for 4k for the amount of vids we make.
The 1080 is very good on this camera and you have lots of options on how you can film with it when it comes to frame rates etc.
@@JakeSloan i agree the 1080 is really good. Still I wouldn't buy this body if i can't afford the storage
Hi Jake, what an awesome video. I am a bit of a tech dummy so I'd appreciate any advice on my specific ambitions. If I have an A7s111 paired with a 200-600mm Sony F5.6, what are my options for maximum zoom? I assume that I can use the crop sensor mode and increase the zoom by a factor of 1.5. Can I also use the clear image zoom as an additional method of getting closer to my subject? Sorry if I've missed something and any advice is super appreciated. Cheers and greetings from Australia.
Thank you, you could do that but I would not since you will rapidly loose data. you can use clear image zoom but there is no APSC mode like in some of the other sony cameras
@@JakeSloan very much appreciated Jake
Great vid! Looking forward to seeing your Aurora with this beast. Almost came up but weather combined with travel difficulties right now make it impractical. Get that good stuff. Please shoot some in RAW if you get the chance. I’m eager to see how it grades.
I will do my best but I'm not sure if I can get hold of a Ninja to record RAW but we will see
Dude goes "Do you even care about APS-C lenses on the A7Siii anymore" and I thought "Oh yeah I forgot I clicked on this video for that!" such a cool thing to capture.
LOL
Hey Jake, Awesome Video. I already have the two anamorphic Sirui lenses and will buy the A7S3 soon. Let's say you would make a project with the Sirui Anamorphic lenses and opt for the crop in post option. Appearantly the CIZ feature does not give a quality advantage and the post cropping gives more flexibility. Would u make a 2160p or 1440p youtube upload?
I would always make 2160p because it causes CZcams to process it with a higher quality compression that if you upload it in 1080 or 1440.
Talk about being in the right place at the right time....... Great video and thanks for the info.
Thanks for watching!
An outstanding video my friend. I really enjoyed watching. Keep up the fantastic videos. Thumbs up from Kingsport, TN!
Thank you very much! Cheers
I know that full frame 1080p resolving power is excellent compared to the likes of A7iii. How is the 1080p resolving power in crop mode? Thanks.
it is still excellent
Cool Jake!
Thanks Kardoso!!
Jake thanks for a video.
How do you manage to shoot sirui with Sony A 7 s iii 120fps?Any tips?
I shot in full frame at 120 and then cropped and desqueezed in post to get rid of vignetting. Cheers!!
@@JakeSloan
Thanks bro.
I use clear image zoom but with 120fps it s disabled.
So normally i shoot with that heavy full frame vignetting? What s next step when you transfer this footage to fcpx?
What i do is when i open a new project i customize it to 5107/2160 and than disquiz it to 1.33 X
Same steps but just a crop added before disquiz 1.33x,correct?
Jake...how are you mounting it? The 35mm i just ordered does not have a A mount adaptor for the Sony A7siii..and i see none available. So what did you do?
*UPDATE So if you get this lens and the Sony E mount adaptor, some things to know. to avoid frustrations and questions. (1) On the adaptor box is a picture of a Sony A camera body. In putting the adaptor on the Lens, you will see bright red dots to align. Or so you would think. Nope. Don't do it, the lens wont go on the camera. Rather, rotate the adaptor ring around on the lens until it finds its resting place, do not worry about aligning dots. I know i am sleep deprived, so this plays into the confusion, but seeing the Sony A body on the adaptor box, aligning the red dots and then the lens not fitting on the camera cause a rabbit trail of efforts. May my crooked path help make yours straight.
Ahhh yes I think I covered this in. my review of the 35mm anamorphic lens but the adaptor ring and mounting is not really clearly spelled out by Sirui. Cheers!!
2:14 WOOOOW even bigger!!! what a backdrop for a review!!! and this cinematic music which reeealy reminds me of a film I cannot recall..
Thanks!
I have an opportunity to buy that very same lens you were using in a micro 4/3 format but I'm shooting with a Sony vg10 camcorder. I see that there's adapters available for micro 4/3 to e mount but would it still work on my vg10 camcorder? I realize the vg10 is slightly outdated and it's not nearly as new as your a7s3 is but I still love to shoot with it and the main reason I purchased it was because of the interchangeable lens system. I didn't want to be tied down to just one lens. I'm not even sure my vg10 has clear image zoom on it. I have updated the software to the version 3.0 through the firmware update and I really want to use the anamorphic lens on there I found one on eBay for just over $500 but it's micro four thirds mount. I am slightly apprehensive to purchase it not knowing whether or not it would work with my Sony vg10. Thank you happy shooting and I really enjoy your videos
Hey Bryan, I would recommend renting one from lensprotogo or lensrentals and buy an adaptor to try it out first. if you don't like I then you haven't wasted a lot of money. I'm not super familiar with the NEX mount so I cannot offer much help there
nice, how do you avoid jelly effect on this exact setup a7siii and sirui in my case 50 mm 1.8 1.33x
you must set the stabilization focal length to 50mm manually
@@JakeSloan i did and got a little better, i was reading about turning off the camera stabilization
wow dude those ice chunks falling was pretty historical lol super sick u captured that. pretty new to this channel, love what u got goin on. still waiting on my a7siii to come in ;_;
Thanks! I always hope to capture that stuff but its pretty rare lol. Thanks and I hope it comes in soon!!
we just watched global warming in action
Sort of but also glacier constantly push ice off into water since they are constantly flowing downhill this glacier has retreated a lot in the last 100 years though.
Such great content, and so well delivered. I also really like your reflective comment about, ‘do we even care about APS-C lenses after that?’ Well, yes...and no... Well, we are certainly living in an eventful period in history.
LOL very true!
Thanks for the info! This applies to the fx6 too, I´ve test that today with my Tamron APSC 18-200 mm zoom, and you can even use it at 18mm with a 1.5x clear image zoom! It´s an interesting tool specially to shoot with some super 35 PL cinema glass and get better resolution.
NICE!
*Jake Sloan* Good content
Thanks!
Great stuff Jake, capturing that ice breaking off was epic! May I ask how did you desqueeze the image, was it in camera or in post? I just got the 35mm Sirui full frame anamorphic, but it looks terrible in camera, as well as it has this terrible wobble. Hoping you have a tip for that!
Have you tried shooting with an external monitor that will desqueeze? That helps the wobble is hard due to the ibis in camera. Tripod or gimbals help!
@@JakeSloan yes, the ninja v does the job, I've figured out that sony doesn't have the desqueeze option, would be so much more convenient!
Hey question can I use clear image zoom while using the atomos ninja v like say I’m using the sirui 35mm lens with the atomos while recording in raw will I be able to clear image zoom 1.5x and still record
I don't believe so, I haven't been able to test it personally though
@@JakeSloan maybe I can and then crop in post like you did in this video , hopefully in the future you can test it that would be everything with the ninja v and the sirui combo I truly believe you’ll get the best image quality the camrea can possibly produce
What drone were you using?
These drone shots were the Skydio 2
I'm assuming this works the same for zve-1?
I believe so but I haven't worked with that specific camera yet
I’m not too sure I got it right 🤔 It seems like if you go with clear image zoom, you keep the real black bars on top and bottom which naturally come with anamorphic lenses. But if you do it in post, you need to add fake black bars. Am I right?
Thanks 🙏
it depends on how you work with it in post
that is just amazing that you were rolling
It really is!!
I have an a7iii should I switch to a7c because I mainly shoot videos of myself!
Woah the iceberg bit was crazy
I would stick with the A7III for now. Next year they will likely release the A7iv and it will probably be worth the upgrade. The a7III to a7c isn't really worth the change imo . Cheers
Holy Shhhiiiiiii !!!!! you got that on camera!!!! I can tell how HUGE it is by the SOUND!!!! DAAAAAMMMMMM.!!!! AND YES, of course, than you for the lens review :-)
LOL thanks so much
What is a final resolution with a 1.5 zoom?
The camera will still give you a UHD (3840x2160) file.
Wy not using digital.zoom or smart zoom. Uncan access both from digital zoom tab instead of clear image zoom.
digital zoom makes the image degrade very fast where clear image zoom does not
Wooooo, is it too heavy or is it melting that causes the crash.?
it does that because the entire glacier is sliding down hill slowly into the water as it does the parts near the water break off
Thank you bro you answered my question in the first 10 seconds 😂💯
Happy to help
Dose the Sony a7siii have automatic zooming in the settings ?
It does but I wouldn’t recommend it
@@JakeSloan for the video settings too? Can I do a slow zoom in while filming ?
Do you loose AF face detection when Clear Zoom is enabled? Like on the A7 III
Yes you do unfortunately
@@JakeSloan do you happen to have the sigma 16 1.4 for e mount? Would be interesting to see how it performs with clear image zoom
I do not anymore. I sold it with my a6600 a few weeks back 😔
@Brian Decasa The Sigma 16mm f1.4 works beautifully in 4k full-frame on the a7s3. -when using Active Stabilization the vignette is already gone for 90%, so you can use it and still have Face AF and eye AF.. (crop in just a tiny bit in post to get rid of the remaining vignetting) or use Clear Image Zoom 1.1x together with Active Stabilization. (You do however loose AF face detection as soon as you use Clear Image Zoom). If you don't want to use active Stabilization then you have to crop in 1.2x for all the vignetting to be gone.
@@RaymondKPhotoVideography thanks so much for your insight! Have you tried eith the 30mm and 56mm sigma 1.4s?
So cool
thanks
that was epic :)
Thank you! It was epic to be there when it happened!!!
So when using clear image zoom the A7sIII is upscaling to 4K? lets say you zoom 1.3 times, the sensor has 4240p horizontal, divided by 1.3 you have 3261.... that means you actually are shooting 3.2K upsaceld to 4K?
yes just the camera does the scaling for you
Does clear image zoom work in 4k120??
It does not, only in 4k 60
I keep getting invalid lens error when using my Sony 200 to 600?
Make sure it’s not set to auto under you APSC/Crop mode settings.
very nice video
Thanks
Hi just got my camera and am using the sigma 18-35mm 1.8 and want to use Clear image zoom in 4K but it won’t let me zoom in until I pass 35mm. It’s not working. SOME ONE HELP PLEASE!
I do show how to do it in the video did you see that part?
@@JakeSloan I did! It a great video but I don’t know if it’s possible to use a zoom aps-c lens and clear image zoom. I works fine with my 50mm Canon prime adapted on. But as soon as I put my sigma 18-35 EF lens on clean image zoom will not work anymore even when I make a custom function button for it similar to you
friend I am jealous !!!! What a place is from another world than beauty. I do not understand what idiots have that can put that they do not like this video ???? keep it up you are the best⭐⭐⭐🔝🔝🔝📸😎
Thank you very much!
I know this video is old, but my work around is keeping custom setting 3 in 1080 60fps just to get apsc mode with clear image zoom stacked. It’s 1080, but it’s so useful for those moments you need to punch in as I don’t like having a lot of lenses in the field.
excellent idea!
Cool, so basically as expected. The Clear Image zoom will give you 2.7k of Res. Much nicer than the 1080P super 35 mode for sure! :) Thx for the vid!
very much so! Cheers!!
But I guess if you use clear image zoom , you can't activate subject tracking/eye auto focus . I am not sure though .
@@MSAcademy I think you can! double check though!
Does it work with an external monitor?
You mean does it zoom in or does it desqueeze?
@@JakeSloan If Clear Image Zoom works while using an external monitor and recording 4k.
Awesome! I'm amazed you recorded all that!!! Jelaous people will say is green screen! 😂
Lol Thanks a lot!!

yes it did
Ice falling apart ... that's Alaska!. LOL

Nice, thank you! 2:47, one of those old tricks, that 4K ruined. xD
LOL cheers
You can shoot 4K in APSC/S35 mode, shoot in 'M' manual setting.
really, does this work?
I tested it. it does not work. Since i press the shutter button it crops in:-(
Yeah it does not work on the a7sIII
You'd need a 24MP sensor to do that.
If you had named this video 'Glaciar collapses while vlogging' you'd have 8million views
LOL probably
1:30 major glacier FALL
yep
Meh, it loses a lot of detail if zoomed in in 4k.
Just not enough res on the sensor to use this often.
But it’s possible and that was my goal to show. People can decide if the trade offs are worth it
Sir which country do you belong..??
what do you mean?
@@JakeSloan oo sorry for mistake
Which country do you belong
USA I live in Alaska
@@JakeSloan sir atoms ninja v can record gameplay from computer
appreciaye what you did but you could have chosena. better subject to analyse sharpness!
You’re right. I could have done a boring chart on a wall and just sat in my office 😂
Nice! (But APS-C isn’t same as Clear Image Zoom)
No it isn’t but that’s what people search for and use as terminology for clear image zoom. Many people just want to know if they can use apsc lenses on the a7sIII
@@JakeSloan Gotcha, sir. Sounds like ‘Using APS-C Lenses on the A7S III’ fits better. (I watched, waiting for how to turn on APS-C feature on my A7S III. Didn’t see it, hence this comment.) All is well and appreciate your time and efforts!
Do you even care? So funny! Great shot, and no, I didn‘t care anymore :-)

Sea levels rose by several inches during this video.
Not how it works and they definitely did not since this is a lake…
@@JakeSloan You must be fun at parties.
Guesss not. More ice crashing please. Just like NatGeo.
well I try but it only comes off when it wants to
You could definitely click bate the crap out of this video lol
LOL for sure
You forgot to mention that clear image zoom doesn't support any kind of tracking autofocus.
That’s true
Epic, apsc what huh? Lol
Lol right?
Iceberg: “Excuse me, no.”
lol
melting glaciers, sad
this happens regardless of melting, glaciers constantly flow downhill and ice will fall off the toe into water like this because the toe has nothing to support it
Yes this happens every summer, of course! But I'm more referring to the glaciers as a whole, come back to this spot 5 years from now and it will be much receded @@JakeSloan
Global Warming, sea levels rising. Take care of planet earth. Let's all do our part.
we all should do our part to take care of the planet however glaciers do this (calve) regardless because they are literally rivers of ice flowing downhill so as they flow they push off the ice at the toe
Please stop measuring distances with your feet.
I will measure with whatever I have with me and since my feet are always with me I use them to measure 😜. I’ve converted the distances for you: I was 70m above the water. The glacier face is 24m high and 305m wide. Cheers
@@JakeSloan I understand Jake, just joking. Sure, use whatever makes sense.
Video is very good by the way, quality humor :).
Take an extra battery with you wrapped in socks to keep it a little warmer, perhaps it can help you with the camera issues, I read people are mentioning temperature dropping the voltage of the batteries, cheers.
@@ChargedPulsar of course always in good humor! I did usually try and provide both for all my friends on Celsius and Metric. It definitely slipped my mind on this video. I use a small battery powered hand warmer and keep that and all the batteries in one compartment in my camera bag to keep the batteries warm and it works wonderfully. Cheers!!
Come for the camera knowledge, leave with clear evidence of global warming.
glaciers do that year round and regardless. they are constantly flowing down hill and thus calving into bodies of water
Oh global warming, yes it’s REAL!
Sort of but glaciers do this when they are advancing as well.
