  • This nicely shaped shimpaku juniper bonsai needed a dynamic change as it needed to better show off its best features. Lots of Jin and Shari (deadwood) were hidden with too much foliage. The tress also wasn't telling a story of why it has struggled in life with all the deadwood on it. There was too much foliage which need to be reduce. Did you pick what it would become?

I’ve always loved the look of bristlecone pines and this gives me inspiration on how to imitate one.

It's important to have a vision when working on your tree (the only mistake is killing it). Just as a personal preference though, I try to avoid wrap-around branches and always keep an apex no matter how reduced it may be, especially on evergreens/conifers. Still I like how this tree turned out, and your vid opened me up to some new possibilities.

Hi David, do you have a tutorial on how the shari on the trunk was created. I am really interested in these types of trunks on a juniper. Thanks

I can't tell you how many times my original front is no longer the front.
