I once asked my dad if he had ever killed someone, he looked me dead in the eye with this weird look, almost like a sadness in his gaze, then he cleared his throat and said "too many" and then after that neither me nor him ever mentioned it or talked about it, it was a very powerful moment we shared when I was just becoming a young adult; powerful but at the same time highly confusing considering the fact that my dad is a retired college professor who was never a part of any armed forces.

I have a 71 year old friend who is a Vietnam vet. He joined the army at 17. Immediately after Boot Camp, his first assignment was fort Kentucky the republic of south Vietnam.
He was sent out to this valley, where they created a perimeter near a known trail that the North Vietnamese were using to move arms.
In the hills above the valley are US Army cannons. Also in the hills the US Army had spotters. The spotters would radio the parameter with the coordinates. The perimeter would radio the cannons with the coordinates, and then give the OK to open fire.
When the cannons started to fire, everybody ducked in a foxhole, and sometimes the shells would land about 30 feet away.
He said he had to remove branches off of him that fell out trees. He was covered in about an inch of dirt. Then when they popped up out of the foxhole, they had a fire in the direction where the bombs were landing.
