  • Si sits down with Andy McLaren to discuss the midfielder's extraordinary career ranging from hitting the heights of winning the Scottish Cup with Dundee United in 1994 to the lows of failing a drugs test after his move to Reading. Andy also talks through his recovery from his off the field issues to build up his career again at Kilmarnock to the point of achieving his first Scotland cap. You won't be disappointed with this one, there's not many a story like it!

Remember when Dundee United won the cup. Andy turned up at a Wolfe tones concert in Glasgow the same night with the cup. Absolutely brilliant.

Absolutely brilliant. Well in Si and Andy.
I used to go to Doms for a few years, I was in his wee brother John's year. Andy was easily the best player I've ever played with or against.
I mind one Saturday morning getting sent to go and chap his door to get him out of bed after a game had kicked off. I think we were getting beat 1-0 by the time we got back. So Andy turned up, gets subbed on and scores something like 8 goals and sets up about another 4, and that's probably an underestimate.
I was so chuffed when he got capped for Scotland. Unreal player.

I remember watching this team from the George Fox stand. Andy generated an excitement and expectation but he never quite fulfilled that. He always looked knackered running back after a run down the wing and I suppose that was down to too much partying? That is a shame because he was very talented. Still, good to hear him talk about this UTD team as I followed them quite closely and they were the new breed that changed the club in a new direction.

Andy had me in stitches with his stories especially the last one with Siggy Jonsson with Jim McLean having to bail him out of jail during the night 😂and I’m glad Andy was given a 2nd & 3rd chance by both Reading & then Kilmarnock after his troubles with the drink & drugs

Dundee United at that time had a great youth policy for players, well known & respected .. but, the contracts they had those boys to sign was a fuckin disgrace. JimMcLean was a great manger, but a Andy McLaren says himself his man management couldnae compare tae Fergies
