  • In this video, Andrew shares a very important yet rarely covered tip about when to stop trimming deciduous bonsai in the end of the growing season. Like decandling on pines, the timing for this tip depends on your location, but with good timing we can assure that the regrowth on our deciduous bonsai has an opportunity to regrow, set buds and lignify before cold and dormancy arrive in autumn.

    Great topic for discussion on our deciduous bonsai pruning! Here on the VA coast, I push it to 2nd or 3rd week of August with great success. We have a longer seasons, and ready to bonsai-shuffle to the greenhouse for any unexpected cold snaps.😅

    Yeah, I don’t touch the potted birch after mid-July up here in Alaska. Even then, whatever grows from here out will most likely die back over winter. But it sure helps to rebalance the vigor. I’m really diggin your content, good sir.

    I appreciate you representing deciduous bonsai. I live in colorado and my entire bonsai collection has been from native nursery stock gathered over the years.

    Excellent info Andrew, really helpful !.. I wanted to also ask again about the hydraulic haul master working table you have in the Video.. you told me it was from Harbour Freight.. I had a look on their Site and they have the same table listed, BUT it Doesn’t have the Same Wheels on it as yours !…they are really Small wheels !.. did you Add these bigger wheels your self ?.. I’m really keen to get one of these, I’ve been looking for a good one for a long time. Thanks again for your help Andrew And keep up the good work. 🙏

    I made that mistake last year when I heavily pruned my European hornbeam late August and as a result had major dieback issues on the tops of the canopy where new buds didn't have time to set.. thanks for the reminder 😅

      @@rakuyobonsai I would like to see more videos with the others you have. I´m making two Betula pendula from seedling (now 6 years old) and bought a Betula utilis and chopped it down, to see if i can get new branches on it.

    Rewatching this trying to figure out if I can do another prune on my alder this year, and had a question. Does the vigor and responsiveness to cutting affect your timing? My alders grow very quickly and respond well to my cuts.
    I'm leaning towards the "too late" side of things, as I'm 2-3 weeks past the timeline that you mention (adding ~1 week for being up the road from you), but still curious about the idea of how the species or particular tree might affect timing.

    • @rakuyobonsai
      @rakuyobonsai  Před 25 dny

      Yes, an alder might be able to be pruned this late. Especially if it is vigorous
