All I kept thinking was that Alex had been kind of an awkward slight ugly duckling growing up. That no one saw her, not even her parents, so this caused her borderline tendencies. Then she grew up, had her glow up, but because of her personality disorder, she couldn’t attach properly to any man to have a marriage and family. Close has said in many interviews that she had a lot of sympathy for Alex the character because she was mentally ill. She thoroughly researched borderline personality disorder with psychiatrists. That’s why she didn’t like the ending of the film. In keeping with her character, she would be infinitely more likely to harm/Jill herself than anyone else. Alex's sick obsession caused her to take her own life and ruin Dan's in the process. His family will suffer for a long time because of his choices.
