Glen Close did a brilliant job here. You could sense in her mannerisms, the way she laughed and talked these little signs of her personality disorder. It's so nuanced. She's such an amazing actress.
Hello there!

This movie should be shown at all pre-marital counseling sessions. The risks just aren’t worth the hassle.
Bubububut da bunnnneee
I also think so. His daughter and wife could die because he decided to cheat. And that's not even something unusual. Jealousy murders happen every day
You're right. Just too big of a risk to get married.
It doesn't stop people unfortunately. But the risks are worse now than they were then.
They are with the hassle. If you are discreet
My lord....Glenn Close was just PERFECT in this role!!
Absolute!! And she also played Cruella DeVil in 101 Dalmatians from 1996 and then in 102 Dalmatians from 2000. And in 1999, she played the voice of the female gorilla "Kala" in Tarzan.

@laurentseghers6579 it's a movie. She plays the starring role. You have GOT to see it. As far as I'm concerned, Glenn Close is At. Her. Best.
@@golden8972 Yes that’s absolutely right. And I've known Glenn Close since I was 4 years old, because I saw her for the very first time in 101 Dalmatians.
The chemistry here is just unbelievable
She looks like a man

Its not chemistry it's lust because a man having had sex with his wife that is all he will be sorry soon as he relieve his self
Not sure about the chemistry. Dan didn't stand a chance. Alex held all the cards.
My guess is that Dan felt at home, bored, tired, dead, routine, always the same, dead.
Years ago i read a magazine article featuring Glen Close. She said after this movie came out she could not get a job or a date, everyone in Hollywood was afraid of her.
I can't speak for the job situation, but her not being able to get a date would have been due to her being in her forties, rather than the character she played in this movie.

You know you have a great actress when you can tell Alex is really off without her even talking. Her eyes were mesmerizing and telling.
The wife was a lot hotter and more feminine. If it were today I would assume Alex is really a man. It was a total bonehead move to get with that psycho. Reminds me of Bezos ditching his wife for the crazy post-wall Latina and costing himself $80 billion.
yes! there's a wildness in her eyes that seems dangerous... but could easily be interpreted as healthy excitement when that's what one wants to see.... hindsight 20/20... :) she's so good....

People can't act like this anymore this wasn't my generation but actors from the 80s and 90s sure are better actors then today imo
Also the sex scenes were very passionate in these 90,s movies ie sliver and basic instincts ( just can’t match it in todays movies )😍😅
You're absolutely correct. Actors today always look like they're acting. They have no depth . It's the difference between growing up reading novels, classic literature, Shakespeare, etc and growing up taking selfies.
True. Today they are cringy just like singers are today.
100% less tik-tok more Stanislavski.
It takes a certain caliber of a person to do what they do in front of a camera whether it be to cry, smile, laugh, get naked, get angry, etc.
I still think we have some top actors today such as:
Timothee Chalamet
Adam Driver
Anya Taylor-Joy
Florence Pugh
Will Poulter
John Boyega
Robert Pattinson
Andrew Garfield
Jake Gyllenhaal
Zendaya
Rebecca Ferguson
One of my favorites. Excellent film. Back when actors were actually the best at their craft.
I know right
Watched this again recently after many years & must admit Michael Douglas acting in this movie was bloody brilliant.
yes he's perfectly likeable/hateable/relateable.... perfectly ENTITLED, too in a way that just makes you wanna smack em throughout the whole movie... even saying he's "happily married" haha... the logic here is fascinating... it's like "i'm such a happily married and successful guy, that I deserve an affair and no one should really think too much about it.. " .... there's something very interesting about that...
@@florencehenderson3707that's deep. He slept with a woman who wanted sex. Why should he be killed for it?
@@DarkMoonindigo I never said he should be killed for it. I don't remember who threatened who first. If she threatened him, I see what you might be getting at, otherwise, not sure what you mean by that.
@@florencehenderson3707 him being happily married commands respect. He successfully has a relationship. Thus him having sex outside that relationship means just that. Having sex. She on the other hand cannot command the same respect because she is not happily in any relationship commited or otherwise.
@@DarkMoonindigo that's quite the concept you've got there. But if he's getting his happiness and success through lying and deceiving people close to him, then I would say his happiness is skin deep, if that. It's little more than a clever ruse and easily upturned by crazy pants.
I loved the way she made him hold the lit match for an extended period of time…it almost burned him and he didn’t flinch!
just as she almost burned him, he flinched then though
Michael Douglas, giving this performance in the same year he won his Oscar for Wall Street, shows how -- even while being recognizably *him* -- he can turn his charm in very different ways.
Michael followed in his fathers footsteps. Kirk was one of the finest actors ever . Micheal was often on the set when his father was working and he followed n his father’s footsteps. He is awesome just as his father was.
FUN FACT: The Alex role played by Glenn Close, was originally offered to Michelle Phifer......but she turns it down; after reading the script. But i feel Glenn Close did a amazing job, she should have received an Oscar for that role.
@Antoine Casey That is a fun fact. I had no idea. Another big role turned down by Pfeiffer, along with the Jodie Foster role in "The Silence of the Lambs."
Fun fact: tRump lost the election
As much as I like Michelle Pfeiffer, I don't think she would have been right for this role. Glenn Close nailed it because she's braver as an actress than Michelle.
Glenn Close has a fiery spirit that’s why she could pull off a role like this. Michelle phifer not same caliber
Glen herself said that this role called for someone younger & way more attractive then she was but her acting is so superb & phenomenal that I did not even consider either one of those two things EVER while watching her performance…❤️❤️❤️👏🏾
That’s what makes it super realistic because that’s how it would go down in real life
Yeah, I only knew her from other movies and I thought "She plays a seductress in this one? But she's not even pretty!" - but she's pulling it off perfectly. It doesn't even MATTER that the character's real wife is prettier than her. She's so seductive and charming.
Imho it is even much better when someone average looking with great charisma / talent plays this role. It is more believable and relatable and she was brilliant. I absolutely cannot see any other actress pulling this off.
I think she looks gorgeous here in this clip!
I agree. I felt like she was perfect for this role. I don’t think this role called for someone younger and prettier. All I kept thinking was that Alex had been kind of an awkward slight ugly duckling growing up. That no one saw her, not even her parents, so this caused her borderline tendencies. Then she grew up, had her glow up, but because of her personality disorder, she couldn’t attach properly to any man to have a marriage and family. Now she’s cruising towards middle age and the stakes were getting higher.
What strikes me is that he makes himself vulnerable by telling her personal details right from the beginning. He hardly knows her and he begins to tell her his whole biography.

Men have zero standards for themselves and happy to admit non stop how untrustworthy, selfish and degenerate they are and don't care for consequences of their actions unless it strikes them in most brutal way
For 5 minutes.
As crazy as Alex is, the way Glenn portrayed her makes me have just a little bit of sympathy for her. Alex is a very sick, sad woman who seriously needs mental help. Glenn gave Alex a humanity that made her kinda pitiful and tragic as well as scary. And that really makes the movie better. Such a fantastic performance.
Close has said in many interviews that she had a lot of sympathy for Alex the character because she was mentally ill. She thoroughly researched borderline personality disorder with psychiatrists. That’s why she didn’t like the ending of the film. In keeping with her character, she would be infinitely more likely to harm/Jill herself than anyone else. She fought for the originally scripted ending-hard-as it didn’t go over well with test audiences or the producers. I think this is honestly the best female performance to never win an Oscar.
@@paulvoorhies8821 I do like the new ending for the suspense and excitement but I have to agree with Glenn about the original version. The new ending made Alex almost like a slasher villain and that kinda cheapened it. Typical crazy lady with a knife attacking people. The original ending is devastating. Alex's sick obsession caused her to take her own life and ruin Dan's in the process. His family will suffer for a long time because of his choices. He was innocent as far as being framed for Alex's death. But the rest? He chose to cheat and the consequences were devastating.
@@LiirThropp2687 I like the “new” ending too, as did audiences, obviously. FA was number 1 at the box office for 8 weeks-which is pretty incredible-and was the highest grossing film of the year at 320,000 ,000. I myself saw it in the theaters 3 times. To this day, I’m convinced that Close’s performance was so outstanding that it actually scared some (mostly male) Academy voters, who opted for Cher that year instead. Talk about a robbery!
@@paulvoorhies8821 Strangely, I haven't seen this movie at the time. Maybe, because I was busy with much more important things at the time - was pregnant and giving birth to my second child.

No, Michael's character knew what he was getting into. He just chose to ignore all the danger signs because he thought he could have his cake and eat it too. He wanted to believe Glen's character because he was lying to himself, so he "believed" the lies she told him.

Glenn Close nailed that role. She had just the right amount of confidence and Michael Douglas had just the right amount of trepidation. I never thought of Glenn Close as especially attractive, but she was very sexy in this movie. Then she got to be frightening. I'd say a solid B. 8/10.
Man...if this is sexy for you then...well. Megan Fox in Transformers is sexy, Christina Hendriks is sexy, Penelope Cruz is sexy.
Yes, i agree about Glenn Close’s looks . She was never a true ‘Hollywood beauty’. But she suited this role and was pretty enough, and sexy enough, to be totally believable. One of the truly great actors.
I never thought she was sexy. That 80's perm--ugh. I find her looks vs Anne Archer made it harder to believe he could cheat. I think he cheated on his wife before Glenn.
This movie was so huge in the 80s. I remember when it came out.
It looks like Alex’s hair has been styled to resemble snakes, possibly in reference to Medusa from Greek mythology. The men who gazed into Medusa’s eyes were turned to stone- quite literally fatal attraction.
Stacked perms were the rage in the 80s.
And her earrings looked like snakes

She's portrayed as the evil one, when he was the married man who couldn't keep it in his pants for two days, betrayed his wife, thought he could just use Alex, and expected her to slink away afterward.
right! it's a beautifully complicated story... remember he tells her he's "happily married" ? Really makes you wonder what that means to him... sounds a bit like "my attractive wife is kept under relative control while I keep myself from routine and boredom..." meanwhile, the women in his fantasy world where he is "happy" get destroyed.....convenient, eh? makes glenn's character relateable to women, no doubt....

When I think about it, it seems impossible.. but I think there is something in numbers with them.. like I think they are pushed into quantity over quality and I think it happens on a chemical level.. and that's why they're able to distance themselves.. Or! Maybe an affair like this, as intense as it was, was more about ego gratification for him than anything else.. and for years scientists have tried to understand the male ego !!
