To clarify, it's not $700, and it doesn't actually stop you from playing unsupported/unknown compatibility games. A lot of unknown compatibility games actually work out of the box, Valve just hasn't gotten around to testing them yet; for unsupported games, sites like ProtonDB usually can point you where you need to look to get them running if you're up for a little bit of tinkering.
Oof. They really couldn't get that stuff right?
Yeah i was like wtf u mean $700? The base model is $400
he stated he has the most expensive version so that's what they're reviewing live
@@godisjihyo3615 It's still pretty important to clarify that it's not actually $700 across the board, especially when the screen and internal storage are the only differences between models.
@@MadmanEpic no it’s not. People can do research. Stop. It’s $700 for the version that actually matters
Timestamp 8:25 is factually incorrect. Please don't spread FUD like this.
"...the Steam Deck actually most times won't let you run it because it's not on their Steam Deck compatibility list."
The Deck does not actively prevent games from running, regardless of the compatibility rating. It is true that games themselves might not be compatible (yet) but that is not the Decks fault nor explicitly dictated by the compatibility rating.
Eh, this channel doesn’t believe in research so a lot of their “reporting” is wrong.
1,500 games to try. Probably never thought to try games that weren't officially marked compatible. And maybe they just played Vampire Survivors the whole damn time. But yeah, thanks for the important clarification.
Also just because game is listed as unsupported doesn't mean it won't run perfectly fine with absolutely no tinkering or any settings changes. For example Project Wingman (btw. HIGHLY recommended - it's a love letter to Ace Combat series fans :) )
This was the first video I’ve checked out of these guys. Between that and the vampire game spam, I have no interest in checking out another.
yup steam deck is just a linux computer... so with enough tinkering you can get a crap ton of games running i was playing wow and GW2 on it even though they arent "verified"
Steam Deck is 100% worth it.
1:20 His look at the dude for not being prepared at all.
"The Steam Deck actually most time won't let you run it because it's not on their compatibility list."
That’s just factually false. Here we go again, another big CZcams channel getting simple basics completely wrong.
Because they don’t do their research
Surprising coming from a big channel like this and people who have been in the industry so long. Weird
The level of accuracy has some The Verge PC building vibes.

calling it 1080p when its 720p lol
why would yall say $700 the $400 model is just as capable, just needs extended storage which'll run ya 60 bucks if ur ok with just running games off SD card.. is it worth $700 hell naw, but i'll buy the $400 one when mine is available
For the views, duh!
@@Galius7 that’s such a dumb clickbait title though, why lie about the amount of money.
$650 + tax for the 512 model will put most people into the $700 range. Sure there are the cheaper models but the biggest orders have been the 512.
@@TNTITAN Since when do you put tax as part of the price? Also it doesn't matter what the biggest orders are, that is argumentum ad populum. Has no relevance to what you should get or is worth it
@@Thornskade I have always considered tax part of the price. If your saying it typically doesn’t get reported fine. Your acting it some sort of big lie that one would pay $700 for the device when people have paid $700 for the device.
Shortest battery life game I played is 2 hours. I can also get up to 6 hours on some games. Saying 1 hour + is pretty funny.
I definitely get a lot of games under two hours on mine. Usually the intensive games I get around 80 to 90 minutes. Maybe there is variation in battery life from console to console but this is definitely the case with mine.
@@matthewsinger3628 With certain settings someone was able to squeeze 3 hours out of elden ring on medium settings.
Yeah maybe there could be variation but it can’t be that different. Tweaking settings should yield similar battery life gains for everyone.
@@yardeeknowwhoitis8144 true, my point was if you are running intensive games and trying for 60fps its pretty easy to drop under 2hrs battery life. Sure, there is stuff you can do to extend it, which is nice, but you definitely sacrifice performance on higher end games.
@@matthewsinger3628 you should probably just go for 40 tbh, it feels surprisingly smooth
@@partywumpus5267 yeah, I've tried locking it at 40 and its not bad. I def prefer 60 though and since I almost exclusively play around my house the short battery life isn't a big deal to get the best performace.
holy cow I wish they would've had at least one person that is informed in the tech space and PC hardware.
It is not going to be obsolete within the year because game tech doesn't advance that quickly, and like a PC you can adjust the settings to work with it. It's lower res because of the small screen, so settings don't need to be that high. Also, now that this is going to be in more people's hands, devs well plan accordingly to have their game reach that audience.
And to suggest that this will be obsolete in hardware when compared to the Switch when it can emulate switch better than switch..... what?
I have a pretty awesome gaming PC, but it's the deck that's finally getting me to game again. It's pretty great!
PSP was too wayyyyyyy ahead of its time
I have a insane sim rig I play iracing on. I've had a steam deck (64gb) since April 23rd . Day 1 order obviously.
I play the steam deck more frequently lately. It's great and just so you know the 64gb with a fat micro SD works perfect and it plays cyberpunk way better than last gen consoles . I won't lie the pc with settings maxed out definitely is better but I'd need a truck and a generator to bring it anywhere.

My $400 Steam Deck has been amazing
I absolutely love my Steam Deck! BTW, Steam Deck won't prevent you from trying to run games that aren't marked as verified or playable. It's not locked down like consoles, you can install any Windows or Linux game you want, even if it's not from Steam. A lot of people will even install emulators to play old console games. Sure some games might not work 100% well, but it's still worth a shot especially if you already own them. Steam Deck starts at $399, it allows playing PC games on the go, it comes with an awesome custom Linux OS, It gets between 8 to 2 hours of battery life depending on the game and settings.
Is this lucky winner prize real???

8:25 misinformation. The compatibility is only for what works well. It WILL NOT stop games from launching if it isn’t compatible. Don’t be afraid of unverified games. If it doesn’t launch, it’s crashing. It’s not the SteamDeck disallowing it. A ton of un-Verified games work just fine. Some just haven’t been tested officially and others have some small issues that still let the game work, but puts it outside of the “Verified Rating.” Such as needing a third party launcher; meaning it’s completely compatible, but NOT native to The Steam launcher. Of course a good chunck won’t play or the experience makes it not worth it. There are also a ton of options to tweak (saved per game) to make it work better. You can even play some so called unplayable games with Proton that makes this Linux machine compatible with Windows only games. You have to do your homework to get the best experience. But even for those who don’t want to do all that extra work, this has great value.
The Vampire Survivors interruptions were hilarious at first I thought it was a mistake in editing but omg once I realized it was I was laughing every time.
I love mine so far. I haven't had much time with it though since I've been busy. My only gripe is the battery life with AAA games but some adjusting can make those play longer.
I mean I can get 2.7/3 - 3.5 hours with stuff like God of war so I'm happy
Get a good quality power brick.
I have a high end gaming pc so this likely won't be home to a lot of those AAA games especially with the limited hard drive space (I know you can expand it but still)
This is gonna be an emulation/indie/old AAA game machine for me so I'm hoping the battery life will be much better for that :) and even if I do break out the AAA games- if I wanna run them on max settings ultra everything then I have my PC but that's not why I play Switch games and that's not why I'm going to play my Steam Deck either
@@pepperonin1914 I've had over 4 hours for a few older games without having to tinker with the settings. Got around 6 hours after tinkering. It'll last pretty well in certain circumstances.
Can't get much more than 2 hours for Outer Wilds though, so that's disappointing.
As someone that’s a new dad, I never have time to be on my PC for a long game session. Got my Steam Deck last week and have been able to enjoy games a lot more between things and just pick up where I left off. It’s amazing!
You got it I’m 24 my son is 3 going on 4 he loves playing video games but for a time it was hard for me to play with having a baby running around and working crazy hours now he’s older I can relax a bit more put him on my lap and play some games lol
But it's not 700$. Base model is 349$. And it's completely unhindered by the SD card storage.
They didn’t bother with research
It's $400
- It's $700 - this is false.
- It stops you from playing unsupported/unknown compatibility games - this is false.
- It's going to be obsolete in a year - very unlikely.
- GoW runs at 1080p 60hz on Deck - false. etc etc
How do these people even have a gaming channel if they have no idea what they are talking about?!
They seem to be more concerned with being quirky and funny, with bad comedy than actual info & facts.
Please do better.
Got mine in the Spring and absolutely love it. It feels so good to play on it, and it powers through any gen 7 game and most gen 8 games on max settings at 60fps. I'm destroying my backlog on this thing.
Quick thing though, GoW does not run at 1080p 60 on Deck. It can't. You can't even get 60fps at 720p. The PC port isn't optimized enough and the Deck isn't powerful enough. It does run at a great 30fps with really good motion blur though.
You can get locked 50 fps though, just not full 60 unless you lower resolution which is fine anyways but not for everyone
I run everything at 40Hz - looks good enough to me and is perceivably significant improvement over 30. I'm currently going through my backlog as well - Batman: Arkham Asylum runs at 4W TDP and 200Hz GPU clock at stable 40fps at max settings (minus the PhysX for obvious reasons but it's a scam anyway) - getting like 5h gameplay away from the socket. Honestly though at that tiny screen I don't care that much about game settings, I try to get it as low on power draw as possible while maintaining that 40fps sweet spot and Deck runs longer and cooler.
@@Micromation 40hz is a nice compromise but as long as I can get 1.5 - 2 hours off the socket I'm not compromising 60fps. Just finished Arkham Origins in July and ran the entire game front to back on max settings, 60fps and had an amazing time.
Didn't have to pay $700 for mine...
Me either, I paid 1900$

I had the original steam box, bought on clearance. Runs so much better when you remove its own overlays and switched to just windows directly. It recently died sadly though. Loving my steam deck now!
What’s that game at the very beginning of the video?
I already knew this video was going to be rough when the guy who actually owns the steam deck didn’t know for sure how many GBs was in the version he owned…
Question.. Does it always need to be connected to the internet to play? Or can I play it anywhere at anytime like the switch
Depends on the game, drm requires check ins but should allow offline after first launch with internet (though most like jedi fallen order include a drm free exe but it looks like progress isn't saved from the regular game so you have to start over)
or just if game requires an active connection
Then games like doom eternal require internet at launch but after that nothing is needed to do offline
Then there are games that work offline without anything needed to be done
No, it doesn't. It also has a dedicated offline mode, just like the Steam Client actually
Weird assumption to make by the way, would be kinda weird to make a portable system that always needs to be online now wouldn't it
$700? You told me all I needed to know in the title. I paid $400. Bought a 512gb BC711 2230 for $52 and an etched glass screen protector for $15. That's $467 + tax.
You bought the base model. You poor?
@@muckymucks Yep.

@@muckymucks Nah, just smart
I got the $650 version, but It’s actually better to buy the cheaper version as valve made it extremely user friendly for upgradability.
You can turn off Touchpad when playing Games and the same goes for Gyro controls
In my own opinion; I get more use out of the Steam Deck than the Nintendo Switch that I bought during the pandemic - now that says something. I would have to agree with the inconsistent battery life depending on which games you got playing at max settings - but be glad that you CAN tweak the settings rather than have it system-locked to maximize the battery life across the board and have everything look like crap. I treat my SD more as a portable pick-up on-the-go gaming system without needing an internet connection when I'm out and about. Without connectivity, bluetooth, etc, it lasts roughly as long as you want with a power bank on-the-go gamers nowadays carry thanks to the Switch.
Waiting for mine this year .
Is Destiny 2 compatible??
Apex works in steam deck now?
Absolutely love my Steam Deck. Been playing through my backlog for a while now. Kingdom Come Deliverance, Trails in the Sky, and both Monster Hunter Rise and World. After that, then there's Mass Effect Collection.
The sd card swapping is reminiscent to the original PSP. Also, Dragon Age Origins which doesn't have explicit controller support plays awesomely with some of the custom layouts that use the trackpads. For a true test, I also played an RTS, Dawn of War and it worked well too.
If you already have a Steam library and can afford it, I got the 256GB model and already had a bunch of SD cards, so it's been great. If you don't mind the wait, the Steam Deck is worth it.
That said, everyone says Horizon Zero Dawn works great, and I really can't agree. it's the ONLY verified game that I couldn't enjoy, whereas "unknown" games like Monster Hunter Rise have been perfect.
@@StatisticalGamer Enjoy! I recommend the tempered glass screen protectors from either dbrand or Benazcap (Amazon). I also got a replacement case that has slots for SD cards and a dock.
I've only touched my Switch for Xenoblade ever since
I got Atomic Bomberman running on the Deck.
So I'm curious now. Is vampire survivors really that good?
Wow 161 hours. That's as bad as me when I discovered dragons and titans. May it rest in peace.
Been taking it to work, but what i'm looking forward to is running desktop mode and playing a few emulators
You don't have to run emulators in Desktop mode. Add them as a non Steam game, add a bit of Proton and you're away.
Man that was a painful amount of incorrect information.
The deck didn't stop you from playing non verified games.
None of the models are $700.
And hearing a bunch of console "gamers" talk about how a PC is going to be outdated in a year or two. People are still using PCs they built a decade ago. You may have to change settings, but for the most part you can still play games with older hardware.
I don't get where the idea that you keep having to upgrade to play PC games comes from. Consoles don't get any updates for eight years and that is somehow fine? Before the Steam Deck I used to bring a Dell Optiplex 790 to LANs because I got that from our company's hardware sale for €50 (they replace PCs like every three years) and since I mainly use it as a game server it's easier to bring with me than my actual PC setup which has tons of cables connected. It's completely unmodified yet can play even many brand new intensive titles fine if at very low graphics settings.
Whats up with the "Buttery Smooth" 😆 🤣
My biggest issue with my steam deck is the weight. Longer sessions make my wrist really sore. A stand to hold it up and take the weight my wrist would be nice. I've been playing borderlands 3 and ffxiv a lot on the steam deck
I liked your review of the Steamdeck and I might want to get one but you did not say if it could play the game Crysis
Easily.
I'm curious to see if Steam will sell upgrade modules as a way to keep the deck current. I've seen some teardown videos and they did some cool things with the board for the unit. It would be really cool if you could just "swap the board" for upgrades.
Same here that would be huge for right to repair
It's possible. They could set it up like Framework did for their laptops
This was basically just an ad for Vampire Survivors
I just got my email yesterday and ordered my mid tier model, I'm psyched 😎
What game do you think you'll play first
@@doom3380 well I've had mine for several days now and I've been playing a ton of Rogue Legacy 2. Excellent game. Also been playing some Vampire Survivors.
As some who’s still on the fence about getting one of these I was hoping someone would give a straight answer to the questions I’ve been asking since announcement. Which are, how does the Steam Deck work on home monitors such as hdmi compatible televisions and can it have mutiple controller support?!
The implication for my first question I keep getting is that it works fine, why need to bring it up? But does does the Steam Desk treat the television as a second monitor or is everything moved from the steam deck screen to the tv screen? And if so is there any delay in the display being rendered to the screen? And finally, does the Steam Deck support up to two controllers?
The whole reason I’m even asking is I play fighing games off my Steam account like Tekken and Gulty Gear with friends on my desktop pc at home but I want a usable and affordable alternative that lets me bring my Steam Library on the go. Like if I go to their place and play the games or just bring it over to my living room to play on my television instead. I love my desktop pc set up, the only issue being is it’s a 40lbs desktop that’s not exactly on-the-go. I’m not exactly hulling to my living room to play couch co-op either.
I want to know if the Steam Deck is really mean’t to be an exclusively hand held console or if it can be as excessible as the Nintendo Switch in docked mode?!
Because if it’s the latter, then that’s worth a buy for me! At that point I don’t even care about weight or battery life since I’ll be playing it on separate monitors most of the time.
Weird that Valve had tried to make Steam console in the past that I never heard of untill now and don’t know what happend to it. Can’t decide if the Steam Deck is the next step up in that or did they abandon the idea of a true home console and thought to break in to the handheld market instead? Just hoping for some clarity in all this.
The steam deck does support multiple controllers, through Bluetooth and USB-c.
Desktop support doesn't work properly (for now) in the Game Mode UI, but works fine in Desktop Mode (and you can either extend or duplicate)
You can hook up as many controllers as you want. Only problem is that some games automatically treat the built-in controls as controller 1. But that can be changed in the settings.
If you get a dock/hub with HDMI and USB ports it is for all intents and purposes a funny shaped laptop. Including the choice of extending your desktop to multiple monitors or duplicating it, or turning off the built in screen altogether. The main point of confusion is that the deck has two modes, "Game mode" which is like a handheld game console and "desktop mode" which is like a PC. For multiple monitors and external controllers you'll probably want to be in desktop mode.

The Steam Deck is a PC, and works like any ordinary PC. You can install Windows on it if you want
Despite this, I will still answer those questions from the pre-installed SteamOS perspective:
In Desktop mode, which is a Linux OS KDE desktop by default, it works pretty much like Windows. When you connect more monitors, you can switch your output with a hotkey or in the options. You can extend your desktop, mirror your desktop, enable/disable external monitors and the internal monitor etc.
In Game Mode, connecting an external monitor will switch the output to the external monitor. Only one display is supported it seems. The internal display will turn off, so it's kind of like docking a Switch. Valve is still working on fixing some bugs with Game Mode and external displays but it keeps getting better. Personally I have not experienced any bugs with external displays in Game Mode, but I've read about them.
The Steam Deck supports as many controllers as you can connect. There are games on Steam that support 8+ controllers, and those work on the Steam Deck as well. The internal conroller is always active and some games will treat it as player 1 without an option to change this, but you can change the controller order in the Steam Overlay to present external controllers as player 1 to games.
Steam deck is 🔥

Misleading price and information. You can easily grab the 400$ model and throw a 2TB microsd in it. Sure you CAN go to 649$(not 700$ btw) but you dont HAVE to. I got the 549$ edition and put a 1TB micro in it. The different models are priced the way they are for mostly storage. There arent any performance differences, at least in terms of gpu/cpu/ram.

Why are you misrepresenting the product? The base model is $399.
Why are you claiming it isn’t competing against the Switch and giving the impression that the battery only lasts a couple hours?! The battery support is BETTER than the Switch because you can completely customize power consumption. The Switch owes much success to being an indie game powerhouse. Guess what? The Steam Deck absolutely dominates in this library of titles.
Idk, it just seems a bit disingenuous.
They don’t like doing research
Maybe the battery life could be better, I don't know much about that. But it annoys me so much how many people think the battery is worse than the Switch when it's actually better, literally and spec-wise that is, if you actually lower the graphics settings of your games to something the Switch would have. But heck if you're playing Elden Ring or Red Dead Redemption on the Steam Deck, games the Switch couldn't even run at all, then yeah, expect the battery life to be lower, what can I say

How many consoles lets you play their entire backlog without a question? Wanna play that ancient dos game? If it works in dosbox, who’s stopping you? You want to play the latest and greatest? Sure, you might need to tweak the settings to get better performance, but that’s always been the case on pc.

14:39 SPINACH GET SPINACH WO!!! 😆
I really love my steam deck but I still play my switch more tbh
There are things you can do with the Switch that you can’t do with the Steam Deck currently. Games are much, much smaller on Switch, downloading them, won’t go through your hotspot data for an update let alone for a full game. You can burn through all of your data in a day, but you’ll accomplish more than you could on a Steam Deck in that regard. The Steam Deck would be irresistible if I didn’t have to consider the cost of downloading on the go. We don’t all have the fiber optic infrastructure, man-caves, lined with LED lights, classic games libraries and funko pops, and many, many people do _all of their internet_ from mobile these days. It’s been just that reliable and the Switch accommodates them, expertly.
Just something to consider! Great Stuff, as always!
i just upgraded off a steam machine lmfao had it for so long
Additionally people seem to overlook the sheer freedom the SteamInput with provided controller hardware really offers - remember all those times people had to riot on Reddit for game developer to implement gyro aiming for your favourite Switch game... And then you had to riot again because their implementation was dogshit? Well with Steam Deck you can enable gyro aiming in ANY game whether it supports it or not. Hell, you can run games without native controller support (can play for example Guild Wars 2 on the Deck just by reconfiguring gamepad controls to keyboard and mouse input and creating control layers with additional buttons basically multiplying possible inputs by 4x... and then on top of that you can still use trackpad to being mouse up if needed). This is unparalleled freedom and power in hands of the user.

It's worth every penny. I got mine a few weeks ago and love it. It's not going to kill the switch. Nintendo could write a check and buy valve if they wanted. But it's not a switch killer. Apples and oranges
If metroid prime trilogy comes to the switch then the deck is definitely not a switch killer

It won't be obselete in a year. That's crazy talk, no industry is shifting that far ahead in a years time. New focuses are on raytracing and 4K textures. It'll be fine for years to come and ask yourself does it really need to play everything with all the emulators and 50 thousand games catalog.
Final fantasy 7 remake works great, even if clouds hair looks wierd, but plays great
HAHAHAH the Vampire Survivors is killing me
Shot mine down just because I wasn't planning on a whole new PC build in the Spring. Next year or v2 maybe at this point but I NEEDED that new PC first. Also Vampire Survivors has to be the best $3 I've spent on a game (not on sale either) in a good long while...maybe ever!

The base model may be cheaper but what are you going to play that's smaller than that? Basically only indie games.
If you have the 64gb you aren’t playing anything. But once you get a 512gb micro Sd card you can fit over 10 AAA games on it. That’s what I did for my base model 64gb steam deck.
It has expandable storage.....
@@RatedMforMatt-ure Sure but there have already been reports of long loading times and choppiness since the game is loading from a slower storage medium.
@@freemanlegend8169 you can swap out the NVME for a much faster one, you don’t need to use the SD memory.
This is when you buy a SD card like it's 2012, but.
It’s not worth $700, it’s worth more in my opinion - my favorite handheld console. Ever.
I would only buy this if I was already in the steam market. Being that I already bought so many games for other systems I’m not willing to buy those games again for another system
I do think it's a silly idea. Consoles will never be beat in terms of simplicity and consistency. Most PC players make a huge deal out of having the most powerful machine they can, so I can't see them favoring ease of use/portability over performance.
@@StatisticalGamer yea I think that’s why most people don’t move like PC players will always be PC players and vice versa. But I am interested and if I can get my gamepass games on there or PlayStation membership games downloaded to it I would definitely buy easy
Steam deck doesn't stop you from playing unverified games
I feel the need to launch VSA, Vampire Survivor Anonymous for Flawless J.
It replaced my portable. I don't suffer from battery fear and I travel all the time. But I do bring down settings. I haven't played a single game where I couldn't get over 2 hours.
DMC 5, GTA 5 are the most demanding so far.
It's simple. just preplan how long you will be out and set your game to last a little longer then that!
glad to know xplay is still a thing! haha so dope! mindblown rn.
Since I have the XSX and PS5 I will wait for the 2nd generation of the steam deck
Having those consoles has nothing to do with the steam deck. Why did you even mention them at all? I have a PS5 and a PC with an i7 11700k, 32gb of 4200mhz memory, 6tb of m.2 storage and an EVGA 3080 Hybrid liquid GPU. Yet I still have a steam deck as well. See how it makes no sense to mention any of that?
@@RatedMforMatt-ure sure portability is great but there’s also streaming for both consoles now. Both consoles have PC gaming capabilities which is why I mentioned it. Sheesh 🙄
@@DGKMcfly01 Valve works in weird ways and there is actually a decent chance that they won’t make a second generation. So get the deck while you can. It performs really well as of right now.
One thing that I don't like about the Steam Deck is that if the joy sticks or buttons get worn down, you need to potentially replace the whole system. If this happens with the Switch, you can just replace the joy-cons and not the whole system.
Uhh I'm guessing you missed all the stuff about it, but that's just not true. They designed the device knowing users would want to fix and upgrade things themselves, give you detailed instructions how to repair everything, partnered with ifixit so you can get official parts and quick guides, etc.
All their pro consumer and moves to make sure I will have a working system for years to come is actually the reason I bought the Steam Deck over the GPD Win. We really need more companies that encourage and provide the right to repair. It kills me when I have to void the warranty on my PlayStation just because I want to clean the internal dust and maintain it's lower fan noise and longevity.
I’m aware that it’s possible to repair and get the parts. My point is that it only takes about a second to detach a joy-con and another second to put a new one on. It doesn’t require any special instructions. You can also walk into most department stores the same day to get a new joy-con without having to wait for the parts you need.
The desperation for clicks is showing with that title...
I keep hearing people say "well, yeah, but I'm not sure about its longevity..." even while they've had obsolete-when-released-five-years-ago Nintendo Switch sitting there on their desk. C'mon, people, really? I booted up DOOM Eternal last night on my Deck on High settings at a pretty nearly locked 60 FPS. The Switch plays that game in potato mode at 30. And you're worried about the DECK'S longevity, here? I think it'll be fine.
As owner of 512GB I would say go with 64GB instead. You can upgrade internal storage whenever you want, you can get etched glass screen from iFixit and technically you will pay LESS than I did. Now is it worth it? That depends - do you like jRPGs and indies? Sure, you can play big games on it but why would you, unless you don't own PC at all. The beauty of the Deck is that you can finally tackle that massive backlog you've amassed on Steam over the years. Just as Switch it's greatest strength is access to huge library of exceptional indie games but unlike the Switch it can play almost any "big" game that came out until now. Verified system is a good starting point but it's not the final judgement whether game is or isn't playable. There are tons of "unsupported" games that either work fine out of the box (Project Wingman for example) while others require downloading community version of Proton and manually setting it up in compatibility (like Batman: Arkham Asylum). In my book Deck does EVERYTHING better than a Switch - it has majority of benefits, with simplicity of use yet underneath is a full blown powerhouse you can do whatever you want with it. There are few links here and there to be ironed out (actuall "sleep" mode with ability to download in the background should arrive with new Linux kernel they're currently working on implementing). And on top of that out of all devices of this type, Deck features unparalleled possibilities - Steam Input, custom commands, community layouts and plethora of way to configure trackpads and use gyro even in games that by default do not support it is gargantuous achievement. It literally allows you to not be dependent on whims of publisher/developer/console manufacturer. I had high expectations for the Deck and it has been surpassed by an order of magnitude. It made compromises to be ultra cheap and made some unnecessary sacrifices for the sake of aesthetics but ultimately, as is, it's a perfect gaming platform. Also, technically it has unparalleled ratio of performance per dollar right now, it is not possible to assemble similarly powerful desktop PC for such a low price point - the cons is that you can't really upgrade CPU or GPU or add RAM down the line but hey.
From what I've read, this is a great write-up, but please don't take this the wrong way...you need to use paragraphs. Anyone who looks at this will stop and move on because such a large block of text is difficult to read, making the effort you put into writing it a waste. I've been a writer and editor and it makes a world of difference.
Meh. I don't wanna open the deck to upgrade and save money. It's cool that you have the option to upgrade it but I don't wanna open it up so soon. I just wanna enjoy it so 512gb is for me
@@doom3380 it's not necessarily about saving money, but it was an example of 64GB being overall the best bang for buck option even if you've decided to turn it into top tier model by sourcing official parts and replacing them yourself. (and this way you would have spare screen too in case of an unfortunate accident). The other reason to grab 64gb is that Valve only supplies 512gb at best and there are compatible drives out there with 1TB and 2TB capacity from WD. Not sure what region you're at so I will use dollars at universal currency but 1TB NVMe drive in 2230 format (Valve advises against using 2242 which is slightly larger due to placement of internal components that get quite hot) which is same as original SSD for merely $130 with postage and taxes. So technically you can have 1TB Steam Deck for less money than official 512GB, especially if you don't care for the etched screen. Plus eventually you will want to exchange thumbsticks for aftermarket hall effect ones from GuliKit - not immediately but official ones will inevitably wear out and fail, the magnetic ones you out in after will outlive you.
Got yours, a year later, already? Gabe finally got back to me on my interest in obtaining his 512 do-dad. Waiting this long, hope pong still works on it.
The most expensive of the three models is $649, not $700. Anyways, I got my high end models month ago and I love the thing. The only weak point is the battery in it is weak unless you mess with the performance settings.
with tax mine was $692.68. so unless you get it tax free it is functionally 700. clown.
I wish they'd quit talking about the steam deck during this Vampire Survivors showcase.
There are waaaaaaay better steam deck review videos here on youtube than this.
This will be my homeless man Christmas gift this year considering ordering this living in my car but looks fun
The Vampire Survivors bit is funny but sheesh there's so much obviously inaccurate info in this, and I don't even have my steam deck yet
I bought the $400 version and just changed the SSD to a nvme.
Huh? sorry its not a ssd For the original.. you changed a SSD to a SSD?
i thought this was 400 dollars??
The base model is $400, which comes with 64GB of eMMc storage. The premium model is $649 (close to $700 after tax) and has a 512GB SSD
I think it absolutely competes with the Switch. The battery life complaint is totally avoidable. Just turn down the graphics in whatever game you're playing to the lowest, set it at 30 FPS, and bam. You got comparable battery life to a switch. With a way larger game library, bigger screen, and better ergonomics.
The switch itself doesn't even have very impressive battery life in the first place. When playing a game like breath of the wild, it also lasts like 2 hours.
Yes it is
Definitely worth it
!cake
I only spent $399. But worth $700
