      I loved Sonic Adventure sure it was not prefect but i have never played a game that is! Since you had a Dreamcast did you ever play Game Arts Grandia II for the Dreamcast? (the PS2 port was not great and the PC version on Steam is good(mostly it does crash every now and then so save often :) It was my very first JRPG so holds a special place in my heart, I have play a lot more since then. I play it at least once a year still. If not I hope you do get around to playing it someday I promise you wont regret it.

  • @DrMadd
    @DrMadd Před 8 lety +721

    To me Sonic Adventure is like 90s action movies. You know it's not that good, focusing on spectacle over plot/gameplay and really outdated but you still have a fun time watching/playing it because of how silly it was and how much heart went into it.

    • @shdowhunt60
      @shdowhunt60 Před 7 lety +65

      I mean, that's the thing with me also. I get that Sonic Adventure is a flawed product, I do, but I don't care, because it has so much heart put into each meticulous detail that it just shines through for me.
      Just look at the world building in general. There's just so much detail, Sonic Team spent a painstaking amount of effort to make Station Square and the other hubs look and feel like a believable world.
      The way the Mystic Ruins and Station square connect via a train station, the cars that bustle through the street, the fact that you have to actually walk INTO levels, there's no bullshit magical portals. Hell, just look at the Egg Carrier itself. The Egg Carrier! Just so much detail into that one place alone! You can go into Eggman's study, FFS! You can see all the games he has setup for himself! The entire Egg Carrier is just devoted to developing Eggman as a character, and it's just fantastic.
      It's stuff like that why I love Sonic Adventure all these years, going back to when I was just 6 years old. It's such a passion project, and we just don't see stuff like that from Sonic Team before. The more modern Sonic games, while they're more technically polished and functional, are also more cynically constructed. It lacks that big-eyed and clumsy eagerness to please that early Sonic had going into 3D in the late 90's.
      I really do hope for the day that comes back to Sonic, because I just find that more endearing than what we've had for the past 7 years now.

    People also tend to forget that this is a 1998 game.
    Sonic Adventure is technically the very first 128 bits big hit remleased in december 1998, it was THE promoting platform for the 6th generation.
    By adding many types of gameplays: running/flying/shooting/searching./exploring/fishing/ its mission wasn't only to promote the Sega Dreamcast but also to introduce the high potential of the 128 bits era.

    "What does Sonic Adventure mean to you? Is it an embarrassing relic that helped drive the nails into SEGA's coffin? Or is it the closest SEGA ever came to doing 3D Sonic right, a landmark game that showed the company meant business?"
    The truth is Sonic Adventure is not wholly either of those things, but rather somewhere in the middle. It certainly portends the direction that the series would go, but given how it was received at the time and the fact we're still having this debate sixteen years later, it certainly has merits.
    The people who bad mouth Adventure and hold it up as an example of 3D platformers worst excesses are wearing some hardcore nostalgia goggles and don't understand the context of the era it came out in, and don't give the game the benefit of the doubt beyond the surface most cosmetic aspects and basic gameplay elements.
    The people on the other side of the debate though are hitting the nostalgia blinders just as hard though, as the game does have some significant issues that hold it back.
    Most everyone these days reduces opinions to easily formed black and white, great or sucks extremes that leave nothing in between. And the truth is Adventure is a more complicated game than that. There are great things about it just as there are critical flaws that drag it down. Adventure to me is a beautiful contradiction, and it deserves more effort than just writing it off garbage or a unassailable classic.

      I have to say, I agree. I feel like the only purpose of live action shots (not including the hardware shots) are if they serve some function that can't be achieved otherwise, like some sort of visual gag. It kind of worked with Josh's Sonic t-shirt, but otherwise felt unnecessary and actually sort of takes you out of the video. I made this mistake myself when I used to make gaming videos: showing yourself needs to serve a purpose that adds significantly to your video otherwise it'll drag it down.
      When the AVGN does shots of himself, it's usually to show his frustration and do a gag. When JonTron shows himself on screen, it's again for funny reaction shots. With TGC, it doesn't feel like it belongs. This isn't a funny reaction sort of channel, but one of well, critique...and also probably nostalgia.

    I actually liked the way the music changed in the second phase of the Perfect Chaos fight. "Open Your Heart" makes you feel powerful and pumped up, the way Super Sonic should feel. But when you bring Chaos' health to zero, instead of the battle being over like it would have been in any other battle, Chaos just comes back with full health again. When that ominous music kicked in the first time I played it, I was nervous. Part of me started to wonder if Chaos could be beaten, or if he'd just continually regenerate until I eventually ran out of rings. It wouldn't have been the first game I played where the player was intended to fail, but of course that wasn't the case here. The music, though, helped create this tension, building up Perfect Chaos to be a terrible foe.

Sure the game was glitchy in some parts, and the camera kinda wonky at times, but look at this game! It's FUN! I enjoyed Colors, Generations, and the day stages of Unleashed, but the focus on INTERESTING platforming is almost totally gone. Why is Mario still relevant? Because he does new and interesting platforming WHILE still having freedom to explore in a non-linear fashion. Balanced gameplay. Not all SPEED SPEED SPEED. Just look at Sky Deck for cryin out loud! Perfect example of fun platforming, wide-open, excellent and interesting level design, speed in the right places. Everything doesn't have to be about boosting and generic platforming. Also, look at the freedom Sonic has to run around. Why would they take away the spindash? Ugh I could complain all day.

After all, I always knew Sonic was Sega's crown jewel, and probably the main thing I was missing out on by passing them up in favor of Nintendo. I never noticed a lot of glitches when I played, maybe they fixed them, or maybe I'm just so used to early 3D games that I subconsciously avoid triggering glitches because I know what sort of situations are likely to create them.

    What does Sonic Adventure mean to me? To put it in a sentence, the best Sonic ever has been in a video game. Yea, it's got flaws, bugs and so on. What do people expect? It's from freakin 1998! 3D video game technology was very primitive at the time. I swear I face palm at people acting like this game should be something as polished and graphically beautifully as today's games. It's just not going to happen. It'd be nice, sure, but unless SEGA releases a remastered edition(which I highly doubt will ever happen) people need to stop whining about Sonic Adventure's flaws, eat the meat and spit out the bones.
    The point I'm making though despite those flaws, it did so much right than wrong that I'm more than willing to overlook them. The music for example is fantastic. I have yet to see a Sonic game top this one. The closest one is Sonic 06, which is saying something. The story, other than Big's, is rock solid. The fact Eggman was not the main villain for once really a nice change of pace, something we desperately need to see again in a Sonic game and not just tease us about it. *cough cough Infinite cough* Anyway, moving on, I have to say, I like how the game at the start shows you Chaos destroying the city, so it gives you incentive to try to prevent it. Alas, it was inevitable, but at least it did a better job at showing the characters trying to stop a disaster like this from happening than a certain later Sonic game that won't be mentioned due to how much I hate it.
    Moving on again, seeing how all the characters' story were intertwined was pretty clever too I have to say. It showed you that it wasn't just Sonic dealing with this threat, but so were his friends, and that they must work together to stop it. Yea, it wasn't perfect, but it's yet ANOTHER example of how this game did this idea better than another later Sonic game that makes all of his friends pretty much useless in comparison. -.-
    Lastly, the character portrayals are as good as it can get for a Sonic game. Sonic is the cool, cocky hero who likes adventure and having fun, but gets serious when trouble comes and is willing to take care of it by any means necessary. Tails is still Sonic's little brother in a sense, but is now maturing, realizing he has to grow up and be his own and that he can't rely on Sonic always to help him. Amy Rose still has a big crush on Sonic, but near the end of her adventure, she's maturing enough to think about maybe it's not worth it anymore. That's great character development as far as I'm concerned. Knuckles is the no nonsense guardian, still showing he can be gullible at times like in Sonic 3, but also has fears like anyone else. Seeing him question why he guards the Master Emerald and what its true purpose was fantastic character development for him. Last, but not least, Gamma. To me, his character development is heavily underrated. It was actually really interesting seeing a character from the other side of things and how he views life being a robot and all, even willing to defect from Eggman after seeing he could be free and do his own thing. Yea, him destroying his robotic brethren was kinda dumb, but again, the sacrifice he's willing to make so those animals can be free is so sweet and touching.
    And no, I'm not going to touch on Big's story and portrayal because there's no defending that one. It remains a mess to this day. Bottom line is, Sonic Adventure gets way too hate and flack for a game. Yes, the flaws and bugs are not good and I'm not going to try to defend them, but if people can't see the gems in the rough of this game, then I pity them because they're missing out on one of Sonic's best stories and adventures, not to mention some of the best characterization from the series too. Like I said, when it comes to Sonic Adventure, you gotta eat the meat and spit out the bones.

    • @rynobehnke8289
      @rynobehnke8289 Před 5 lety +1

      @@filipmartinez1162 Well most collision issues and game breakers from the Original Japanese version were fixed and Adventure Dx added by redoing a lot of the games collision a ton or new bugs like the emerald coast one everyone knows comes from the DX redone collision and is a bug not present in the Dreamcast version.
      Also can skipping certain cutscenes or doing a few things to fast soft-lock the game with the Cutscene problems being obviously added in DX because in the Dreamcast version are cutscenes un-skip-able
      The only problems DX fixed are ones that were caused by the Dreamcast version being locked to 30 FPS while DX restored the originally intended 60 FPS.

    I mean yeah sure it may not be as great as it was back then per say... But honestly I don't think it's the game it's self that was actually at fault here? To be fair the Dreamcast version is still considered the best version of Sonic Adventure as there are a number of issues with the later ports that just damages the series even further. Messed up lighting missing effects and features and granted it added new content they removed tons of others etc.
    The modding community for PC version has managed to salvage the game back to it's original glory in it's design. Because of this the Steam port which originally would be deemed the worst version actually has Very Positive reviews now and people to this day still ask for either a squeal or a remake to Adventures
    Seeing this I believe the real reason DX did so bad in this case is because the reason I stated and not entirely that it's considered outdated. Just wanted to put that out there with my own two cents on a possibility...?

    People looking at Sonic Adventure nowadays are missing two important things:
    - This is a game from the 90s. It was so groundbreaking that people tend to assess it using criteria of the mid-2000s. But it's not a game of 2003-2004. It's a game released in 1998, a mere month after Ocarina of Time. It was nearly a launch title, it was probably the first game that got lip-sync in the ingame engine, and not just the CGI (and the lip-sync is not that bad if you set the voices to Japanese - I don't know if you could do it on the US version but you could in the European). Remember Link's lipsyncing in Ocarine of Time? Yeah, I thought so. "You can't have bad lipsync if you don't have voices at all" *taps head*. It was first at many things and so, yes, it was not as refined as games that built upon that, but that's to be expected. For the time, it was well ahead of its time and very enjoyable compared to the alternatives.- Few people actually played Sonic Adventure on the Dreamcast. Many people either played one of the later ports, or played on an emulator, with a different pad. Sonic Adventure was made for the DC pad, and its particular joystick feel. It doesn't feel right with any other control pad. Not only that, but ALL Sonic Adventure ports are lacking in several aspects, and introduce many new bugs. One that irks me in particular is that, in many scenes in which the original game was scripted to have you land right on a bumper, allowing for a non-stop flow, in the port you land right next to the bumper or right before the bumper, and comes to a stop, interrupting the flow. It's a bug introduced on the GameCube version that would be carried on ALL further versions. If you played SA on the GameCube, or the PS3 or the Steam version, you played the WRONG Sonic Adventure.- It may be kinda cringeworthy, but remember the game was not exactly trying to cater to an audience of 20-something or 30-something grown men. The storyline and the way the story is narrated is meant for older children/early teens, and it was perfect for this audience. I remember being twelve, playing the game, and relating to Tails' plight. Honestly, Pokémon is also cringeworthy for a 30something if you put off the rose-tinted spectacles. Not to mention Yoshi's Story on the N64...
    Overall, FOR ITS TIME, it was fun to play, not as broken as people tend to believe, it was pleasant to a certain audience, and it was technically extremely impressive. That it hasn't aged well, that's certainly true. But has Destruction Derby or Diddy Kong Racing or The Bouncer aged significantly better? Meh... I don't think so. They are products of their time.

    I wouldn't have taken out Gamma, he was a brilliant concept and generally had the best mechanics of the non-Sonic characters, his mode did seem rather underdeveloped however, a lot of his levels are rather basic and short and it felt like his story should have been longer and better connected to the main plot, he was an opportunity to play as a minion of Eggman yet there's after this huge cut following his introduction, all you do is collect a frog. :P I actually would have gladly sacrificed Tails' derivative mode for a bulkier one with Gamma.

      Yeah, but that was the result of not only giving the gameplay to different characters, but diluting said gameplay of any physics resembling Sonic's gameplay and making the whole thing clunkier slower and more repetitive.

      True Gamma had the best story in Adventure, although Knuckles Mechanics also felt better than Sonic's. Both Knuckles & Gamma could have benefitted from more stages. I personally like Sonic Adventure 2 just for realizing those were the 3 best playstyles & making the entire game revolve around them.

    Pretty good video! Now that I'm learning Editing myself (It's probably at ShayMay level), a lot of the intial glamor that I came across when I first found your channel is gone, though I suppose that is to be expected and I'm guessing you already knew that. I can tell you worked hard on this though!
    I was curious to see how you would tackle this game, seeing how its very controversial. It seems like you tried to cover everything without jumping around too much, unlike most other people who review this game, who do just that or feel they have to "pick a side" for whatever reason. Though it seems it ended up being jumpy anyways, you mentioned the game has a misplaced focus but tried to find a cop-out for your review being like that with that ending you put, which obviously, is very one-sided. Which leads me to something else...
    This is just an observation and not a complaint, so take it as you will but...Your channel seems to focus a lot on explaining what makes a certain game "good for its time" or innovative in its own right, or in conjunction of what it was meant to be. Which is fine and all, but I notice now that it takes away from actually trying to judge a game fairly, or in this case, directly compare it to its predecessors! I just feel that attitude puts gaming in this never ending paradox of trying to progress for the sake of progressing, without ever questioning why or what we are trying to achieve from this progression! Its an important part of game philosophy, or philosophy in general, that I feel gets very underexplored. And I feel its quite a shame when you put 2 and 2 together and realize how big of a deal that actually is! :O
    ...With that being said tho, I definetly agree that having a bunch of characters in the game playable was a big deal at the time! I remember playing Spyro 3 at age 6 in 2001 and...yeah, you get the idea. Of course now I grew out of that and now am curious as to how adults or even teens view that game design philosophy! Though it seems a lot of games aren't designed that way anymore and most people who hold that idea in high regard, due so out of nostalgia. Its strange really, that people after all this time, don't let go of that nostalgia and learn to look at things objectively, Like...how else are we supposed to move one otherwise?!
    Well that's enough of a mindless rant for one day! Even if the only mindless part was that last paragraph! Hope you found this comment insightfull and keep up the good work! (I have stuff to say about the Classic games too. But at this point it be better off that I save that stuff for my own reviews that might happen in the future. Your reviews are pretty basic too, plus they are getting pretty old at this point, so there isn't too much point anyways now is there!)
    P.S. You seem to really like the idea of taking an old game and modding the heck out of it! (Especially if its good) ...Why is that!? I just find that very strange! :O
