I agree with that whiny baby man crying about Fusion. Samus should've never been characterized at all. She should've been what all women should be, lacking personality, a sense of self, and individuality. Yes sir. Humanizing Samus is what made me like her. You can be stoic AND sensitive, they aren't mutually exclusive. Bro's an insult to the fan base.

Judging by how Nintendo has been operating lately, I'd say there's a really good chance that DKCR HD is just a precursor for a new DK game in a year or two.

Came back to this review after watching the Metroid 1 redux. I can definitely see where the embarrassment over the "superannuation" segment is coming from, but you did a great job covering yourself by emphasizing that it was about personal taste and not an objective law. That's the value of humility and qualification, it stings less when you regret what you said in the past! :V

As for my headcanon, I will say that there actually was an Adam. And he died saving Samus in some way. But we don't know anything else about him or what happened to him. I'm just going to assume he died when Samus was still in the Federation.

the article at 3:23 is so damning like. I've always been more of a 2D Metroid guy than a prime guy but saying "retro is better than just another sequel" really doesn't lineup with your subtext of "retro should be making more Metroid games" especially because you could easily look at that brand new trailer for prime 4 and call it "just another Metroid game" I believe it will be strong and distinct but it wasn't like retro was a studio immune from sequelitis before this or after this. not that the games weren't good but they were not all revolutions so to speak. and I do get wanting retro to make a new IP or at least an IP new to them. they could really make another reinvention and I'm so sad that there was just. nothing in between tropical freeze and prime 4.

finally someone who agrees. i get so confused when people call Prime a masterpiece and act like it's perfect. like, hello? we must have played different games. the backtracking sucks. the artefacts SUCK. the movement and is so slow and boring etc

I love Dread and it’s probably one of my favorite entries, but in regards to the difficulty spikes. I think it feels un-Metroid-like. Samus’s frailty made a lot of sense back in Metroid Fusion; and perhaps even a degree of frailty would make sense after the events of that game, but I feel Dread overdid it. She somehow feels more frail than Fusion; and moreover it changed 2D Metroid from an endurance challenge where death meant going back to a Save Station, to a game of occasional trial-and-error where the biggest punishment is being taken to a boss or EMMI entrance. Maybe I’m in a minority but I feel such simple checkpoints undermine the threat. I’d rather contend with the tension of having my HP slowly wither away with the risk of lost progress than what it currently has in that respect.

There’s something so classically Nintendo about putting the old format from Nintendo Power into a game all while the Nintendo Power magazines from that era aren’t available digitally anywhere.

I just had a dream about watching your videos. It was this analysis of how the Xbox One lost japanese 3rd party support (I think I was still annoyed with the Marvel vs Capcom Collection skipping Xbox). In this dream the main factor which caused the Xbox One to alienate overseas audiences was the focus on these video game versions of the Micheal Bay transformers movies. These transformers games (which in the dream were seemingly games first, rather than movie adaptations) played like dark souls mixed with shadow of the colossus, where you as a tiny human guy has to evade attacks by the giant transformers. The music sounded like something from Tekken. In the dream your analysis was pretty good, I cannot remember any of what you said but it seemed well put together. I then woke up and felt kinda disappointed.

One thing you must remember if you're going to play this with a 1986 mask on is; you play this game thinking you are controlling a guy. The manual introduces Samus as a him, and constantly refers to him, his, he. You might have heard a rumor from a friend of a friend who's older brother beat the game that Samus is actually a girl, but you can't believe that it's true. "That's impossible!" for video games on the mid-80s. I was never good enough to get the good ending is a kid...

We (the developers) were planning on calling the game "Donkey Kong Country 3: The Undiscovered Country". However, it was deemed too similar in name to Star Trek VI's subtitle, so it was dropped in favour of "Dixie Kong's Double Trouble" (credit goes to Paul Weaver, the co-designer who came up with it). This refers to the game having two antagonists, Khaos and Baron K.Roolenstein, the latter being hidden until the end of the game and is finally revealed as the "man behind the curtain", controlling everyone.

"Prebuilt Dell computer from the early 2000s." Yep, that sums up the WiiU, alright. :/

one of my favorite things about this video is the return of the "this is a video game" opening from the sonic 1/dkc 1 videos. I'm trying to get my girlfriend into your content and I'm recommending more newer videos (because they're just better sorry josh) and in trying to see this the way she would without the early TGC context it's really making me realize how baked in this is to its (not actual) time of production.

Yes! Can’t stress it enough; You were meant to draw your own maps while playing Metroid and The Legend of Zelda. Grab a pencil and a pad of grid paper. Keep it simple. Create a legend. When you clear a screen, add to your map.

While I also think DKC1&2 are better, it's not by much. DKC3 is high up there with the best platformers on the system. In comparison to the other two the flaws are superficial. This was the last great DKC game imo. DK64 was too diferent, Tropical Freeze was better than Returns, but I still like the smooth gameplay of the SNES trilogy more. So I'm still out for a real DKC4.

I hope you do more of these generational retrospectives that show where you were at at that time. I’ve watched this entire thing a dozen times over it’s so fascinating.

As a wii U owner, I was really happy with the great games we got with it. The slap in the face was switch relaunching all those great games again in a better form. Man, that surely hurt 😢

I'm telling you, Prime 4 is going to be a cross-gen release and that makes it all the more exciting! Three years ago we had metroid and zelda starring in the direct. And this time they're back again. I'm hyped to find out what's up with the metroids (as long as it's not just...federation doing federation things again like in Fusion)!

It continues to amaze me how people view the Switch as some amazing pivot in Nintendo's history, when really it's just an evolution of the Wii U. Rather than making the docked experience the starting point and trying to cram a modicum of portability into it as the Wii U did, the Switch is a robust handheld with an enhanced experience while docked. I'd be curious to know how much of the underlying architecture is shared, given how many of the games are Wii U ports. I'd wager ToTK is just BoTW without the hardware constraints of the Wii U. The point I'm surprised didn't come up much in this episode - which is great as always - is the eShop. Easily the best and most comprehensive legacy game selection we've ever gotten from Nintendo. As much as the console flopped and its games as a result (borne out by their success as Switch ports) I think the Wii U's legacy has to include all the fantastic legacy eShop titles.
