    UPDATE PLEASE READ:
The original cable that I linked DOES NOT work. The link in the description has been updated to a working cable. Everything else in the video is accurate and will work. Thanks to minimal.camera for pointing out my error and helping to provide the correct info to you all!
This is probably the question I get asked most, so I figured I'd make a full dedicated video to it. Connecting the NTS-1 to an external MIDI keyboard isn't difficult at all, as long as you have the right cable! Follow these step by step instructions to get your NTS-1 playing nicely with any 5 pin MIDI capable MIDI keyboard!

The reason some MIDI to TRS cables work, and others don't is because there are 2 standards for this cable.
If you think of MIDI Pins from Left to Right as 1,2,3,4,5 and TRS Pins from base to tip as 0,1,2.
Cable A: Connects MIDI Pins 2,3,4 to TRS Pins 1,0,2 and
Cable B: Connects MIDI Pins 2,3,4 to TRS Pins 2,0,1
(In both cables MIDI pins 1 & 5 aren't used)
So if you're in a pinch, and can switch those pins with some wire, you can fix the issue.

Korg and Make Noise, and a few others use type A - the standard, now there is one. Novation and Arturia use type B, because they started out with that. Some newer MIDI devices and modules inputs that just work with both.

I went through the pains of the MIDI cable as well. The one that I knew was "Korg OK" was back ordered even a month or so ago. I ended up just building my own. The reason for the confusion is that B&O made some sort of speaker that used the same cable with different pinout for an audio feed. Anyway, thanks for the video. • @JH-lo9ut
      @JH-lo9ut Před 3 lety +7

Yeah, it is confusing. Novation switched standards too, so the older midi controllers and grooveboxes use trs midi B, but their newer ones uses trs midi A, wich btw. looks like it's going to be the standard from now on.
Here's how I made a simple DIY adapter: took an old 3,5 mm (=TRS, mini-jack or 8th inch) stereo extension cable. Cut off the male jack and kept the female jack with a few inches of the cable. I then took a new 3,5 mm stereo plug (costs about 3€) and soldered it on to the other end of the cable, making sure the tip-lead and the ring-lead were swapped around. (I buy a bunch of these at a time since I tend to wear out headphones at a redicilous rate.) The sleeve-lead is ground and stays the same. I checked wich lead goes to wich part of the TRS jack with a multimeter set to beep mode ( wich makes it go "beep" when there is connection between the two pokers.) I used a second male-male cable plugged into the female jack, just to be sure I could identify the right lead with the multimeter pokers. I made this adaptor male-female and kept the cable really short so that I won't confuse it with any other cable. This means I have to use a normal cable plugged into the adaptor in order to get a male plug in each end of the setup, but you can of couse make this a dedicated male-male adaptor cable of any length if you wish.
It is also possible to take a standard 5-pin midi plug and solder it on to a trs cable, because midi only uses three of the leads. This is way trickier to get right though, since there is just more stuff in there to keep track of, besides the pins are embedded in plastic and will start to melt themselves out of place if you aren't quick enough with the soldering iron.

I just tried connecting my NTS-1 to a MIDI controller using one of the MIDI>aux adaptors that came with my Novation Mono Station and it didn't work.
Both the MIDI cable and MIDI controller I used worked fine with the KORG Volca Drum, which requires no adaptor..
Is it likely that my NTS-1 connection didn't work because of the Novation adaptor? I tried every channel etc.

About some MIDI adapters working and some not working. I might have just found an explanation on the website of Retrokits, which sells special MIDI interfaces. (I'm not affiliated)
A description of the RK-TRS-X interface
"A lot of newer devices nowadays have a 3.5mm jack for MIDI-Out. Unfortunately - unlike the regular DIN5 plugs - there is no standard in this type of MIDI-Out. You could say there is a polarity issue. One manufacturer uses polarity A, the other uses B.
Whatever TRS MIDI Output you may have on your device; With the RK-TRS-X (and a standard minijack-audio cable) you can convert any TRS-MIDI to DIN5 MIDI."

Got a question for ya -
How would I use the key step as a controller for a 0coast while the nts lends its Effects? I really want the nts for the delay and other effects - thinking of also running my Grandmother through the nts at other times as well (without the 0coast…or maybe with it too?). Is this possible?

Same thing happened to me, in error I bought a Type B MIDI adapter months ago, only to find that it doesn't work with the NTS-1, and that frustration, as well as the stupid hexadecimal notation for the NTS-1's MIDI channels, led me to write an article about it. Paying for return shipping wasn't worth it, so I kept it. Fast forward, and I picked up the Elektron Model:Samples (which pairs beautifully with the NTS-1, BTW). Elektron has this amazing feature in which you can change the 'polarity' of the MIDI signal sent out of the device! And for incoming MIDI signals, it automatically detects which type it is. So now I can use that Type B adapter to send MIDI from my Model:Samples to something like the Minilogue XD (which has full size MIDI ports), or to receive MIDI from any instrument. As far as I know Elektron is the first company to do this, but I hope it catches on! Makes life so much easier to not have to worry about adapter type.

I lucked out and was able to borrow some from a friend. Also, thank you Arturia for making your off-standard type-B midi adapters white, so I don't mix them up (labelled em all anyway). I think Novations are also colored and are also type-B (off-standard, officially now).

I was careful to choose a cable listed as type A and everything came in and I did everything shown in the video and no sound whatsoever. Found that there is another setting on the NTS-1that might cause a hurdle to get this working .. : the same menu to change the MIDI channel also has a setting called “Midi Route” (Mrt) , this decides wether the Midi input comes through the USB or both USB and MIDI input into the NTS-1 , for the configuration in this video it needs to be set to “0” for both , otherwise the MIDI input socket is disabled..
This took me some time to figure out , seemed i had set it to “1” by accident when experimenting ..
