Thank you! This tutorial was exactly what I needed. When I opened the box I just started messing around with the Keystep. I guessed right on some things and wrong on enough things that I didn't know how to get out of what I had done. It's such a simple looking instrument that I just figured it would be easy. The right directions are probably in there somewhere, but the pdf is like 80 pages long. Your tutorial saved me a ton of time and energy. Thanks again, Nick. You're the best!
Great tutorial! Just want to point out that you can have the keystep sequencing one channel while you keyboard play on another channel. hold down BOTH 'shift' and 'Oct+" while hitting a key to only change the keyboard play channel.
Thank you for making a nice, basic and simple demo/walkthru of the Keystep, simple enough for me to understand, well done; I appreciate it. You answered most of my questions about this controller. Thank you 🙂
You can run a sequence and play keyboard on two separate midi channels at the same time but you have to specify a separate midi channel for the keyboard play mode. It's done by holding Shift+Oct+ and pressing a midi channel number while in the keyboard play mode. Now you can switch back and forth by using the corresponding channel switching methods. Shift + midi channel number for the sequencer, Shift+Oct+ and a midi channel number for Kbd play. Just don't forget that the Kbd play mode must be enabled before selecting its midi channel.
Thanks Oliver! The keystep is pretty easy to understand once you see it in action. I was jumping across multiple vids to learn how to use it, and just wanted to put something together in one place, and demo the functionality as quick as possible, while remaining understandable.
Haha, yeah I'm working on the musical ability, my tech background helps with understanding how these things work, but my limited musical experience shines through sometimes!
Just got my Keystep today, and to be honest Midi is a complete mystery to me, I probably should have researched a bit more before k bought it. Took me 30 minutes to get a sound with it and Ableton! This has helped a lot though, I'll be connecting it to my synths tomorrow. Thank you!
You made a good choice, took me a bit to get comfortable with it at first too. I haven't used it with a DAW yet, but for gear, you will want to hook your MIDI Cable from the out on the keystep to the MIDI in on your synths to control them. For channels, most gear (at least with my limited experience is set to channel 1, and this is usually customizable). You might have to play around a bit and google some stuff, but you will get it.
Thank you for this very useful video! However the arp octave at 8:39 (shift + octave up or down) does not seem to work in my case. Maybe I am overlooking something?
Hello mate, very informative, thank you. Swing does not actually change the tempo of your sequence but the length of the notes that it consists of, so the upper value of the measure. The purpose of this feature is to introduce some insignificant irregularities in length of the respective sequence notes so they mirror a pattern played by human rather than a machine, which chops out sounds in dead equal lengths. Once again - very straight to the point material without messing about, thank you.
Swing in jazz is sometimes thought of a triplet feel - count a triplet: 1-2-3 1-2-3, etc. but drop the middle note, you get 1--3, 1--3, etc. Think of a blues shuffle. In sequencers, swing offsets every other note by whatever percentage, so that the 'upbeat' or 'in-between' notes are delayed/late. If you visualize a grid, 10% swing means these notes are shifted 10% towards the next note. But every sequencer is different, sometimes 100% swing means triplet, sometimes 100% is literally at the next note (so you wouldn't even hear an in-between note).
Thanks buddy.. best info on Arturia. can you please tell me steps to reset my gate issues. I just need to get "keyboard mode" It is stuck to chords and auto octave movement, every time I go past key 16...
thx for vid ! -- Might anyone know if the Keystep has separate recorded sequences for each midi channel ? (e.g.: A Bass sequence on midi 1, a separate melody output on midi 2 and chords output on midi channel 3 etcetera...) I am guessing that it is not possible, and that one can only play one of the 8 available sequences and simply route that one sequence to a selected Midi channel #. ..
In the introduction, you have played as a chord progression F B & C. Let's supposed I want to do a C major chord progression and convert the B in Bdim. Does the chord mode support this behavior?
If I understand, you can control multiple devices on separate midi channels, but you can’t play a sequence on more then one device at the same time correct? Was curious if it could sequence more then one synth simultaneously, but perhaps I need the pro ver for that. Thank you for the helpful video!
You nailed it, if you want to send the SAME midi notes to multiple devices, you probably can (haven't tired it myself) with the basic keystep and a MIDI splitter, but if you want to do what you are looking for above, I thinking the Pro might be the better choice, as the basic keystep can't do it alone. (please research it as I don't have a Pro and am unsure of its full capabilities!)
Great video man! I have some Pocket Operators and Korg SQ-1 with a CV A / Gate 1 and CV B / Gate 2 for 4 total inputs and a sync in/out with a MIDI out going to the keystep's MIDI in. Do you know if I can use the CV outputs like mod/gate/pitch on the Keystep and what sync settings? I know the Pocket Operator can sync the Keystep, so now I just need the SQ-1 to interact with the setup and I can create a synth device chain. I was wondering if I just need to connect the 3.5mm audio cables to the ports from the CV inputs to the back of the Keystep, but can't find any videos on CZcams which discuss the matter. I'd appreciate any advice, friend. Thank you!
Thx Ghost... OK I dug up the manual for the SQ-1... the issue I'm seeing is with the SQ-1, I'm not seeing where you would patch the CV out items from the keystep(Pitch/Gate/MOD) From the SQ-1 "CV - A OUT - GATE, CV - B OUT - GATE jacks Connect these jacks to an external analog unit that you want to control. The CV jacks output signals that control pitch or other parameters , and the GATE jacks output gate signals that control the length of the notes. IN - SYNC - OUT jacks Connect these jacks to an analog synthesizer such as the volca series or the monotribe, so that the two units will operate in synchronization. The SYNC OUT jack outputs a 5V pulse that’s 15 ms long at the beginning of each step. If you connect the SYNC OUT jack of a volca series unit or the monotribe to the SYNC IN jack of the SQ-1, the step clock of the SQ-1 is ignored, and steps advance according to the pulses that are input. Use this if you want steps to synchronize to the pulses that are output from a monotribe or other analog sequencer, or from an audio output of your DAW." So from what I can tell, the SQ-1 is only outputing CV signals or midi data, but doesn't have options for taking MIDI/CV in from other devices? I'd look into it more, but difficult for me without having a SQ-1!
but you should be able to sync the Keystep with the SQ-1 using the sync out(from the device you want to be the clock) to the sync in (device you want to take in the clock) You may need to plug your keystep into a computer, and access MIDI control center software, to adjust the sync signal on the keystep to KORG if it isn't working immediately
Wow, what a well thought out and researched response to my questions. You rock, man! So from what i can gather; sync in is for external clock and sync out uses the SQ-1 internal clock to send ppqn. The CV determines the pitch of note by 1v to 8v depending on MIDI control center settings. Lastly, the gate determines the length of notes which kind of sounds like swing! You made more sense of the SQ-1 and don't even own the hardware. Haha. I also had the idea of using the MIDI out option on the SQ-1 with a MIDI cable splitter. Sending the signal to keystep MIDI in and to an old Casio CTK 411 which has MIDI in and out. Just bought it off Amazon along with a MIDI to USB splitter.
No problem, that midi out from the sq-1 may be handy for your setup, I came across the following off of reddit "I think it should work, I've had my zoia send notes for the keystep sequencer tho it was a bunch of trial and error with the keystep switches and my ableton. It has(keystep) a midi input for a reason, you could also convert the midi into cv with its cv/gates in the back for other hardware" So maybe if you run the midi out from the sq1 to the keystep, I'm thinking it might be able to grab the sq-1 clock from that connection (just update the small white switches on the back to get the clock via midi) and then it should get the note/gate (not sure if the sq1 sends mod messages but the mod strip on the keystep should) from the sq1 too, which it should be able to send out from the keystep to other gear via its CV out ports on the back
Yeah you can set up a patern within the sequencer on the keystep and play it against any device that will accept MIDI in. Handy for the Volcas, or hardware that doesn't have a sequencer.
hello! I've been trying to use the sequencer and arpeggiator but my restart botton wont turn the light, in return it keeps blinking, any idea on how to set up the controls with ableton? thanks!
Hey Isa, sounds like the opposite problem then what the latest commentor ran into. I quess it made be due to your transpose settings that can be adjusted within the midi controller center application. I did a video on how to adjust it for Volcas, when I get a chance I'll see if I play around with it with Reaper and see if I duplicate these issues, find fixes, and post a vid
Hey had a chance to look at this last night, you are going to want to take a quick look at velocity curve setting in the Arturia midi control software. Made a quick vid here: czcams.com/video/DWPUNp2AIT0/video.html
I just got the Keystep delivered today, the 37 version of this one. It's great but can't figure out how to get the arp or seq. function working at all :( When I press play/pause to start either - nothing happens! It just flashes and I have the dipswitches set to USB on the back. All the drivers are installed as well as the MIDI control centre. Sync is set to on for both INPUT and OUTPUT of the Arturia and I've tried it with just IN too. How do I make this work? I just want Ableton to be my master clock and for the arp function to work. Do I need to be using session mode or something? Maybe it doesn't work in arrangement mode :(
Hey Chris, I don't have any ableton experience, but came across this post with a screen shot of how someone has set up their keystep in ableton: gearspace.com/board/electronic-music-instruments-and-electronic-music-production/1269133-arturia-keystep-midi-clock-sync-question.html Wish I had more for you, good luck!
For some reason, when i try to use the arp to change octives while holding one note, it doesn't work. It just repeats the same note. I hold a note, then hold shft and press oct + but nothing happens, it just repeats the same note... Anyone have any idea whats going on here? Your help would be appreciated. Thanks!
I am trying to do arp octave. In this video you; 1. hold a note 2. hold shift then presses oct+ and it does an octave two note arpeggio, whilst on mine nothing happens... its such a simple process that I cant see where im going wrong. The controller is going into a behringer k-2 when i hold shift oct+ or oct- lights up by itself. I notice in the video this doesnt happen
Really helpful video - thanks. I have just got one of these to play sequences into my Juno Gi digital recorder, as it doesn't have one built in. I'm struggling to work out how to sync up the tempo between the 2 devices though - I'm a bit of a midi newbie! Any ideas anyone?
Hey Gary, I don't have a Juno Gi, otherwise I'd try to figure it out, but the following link MAY help: www.arturia.com/faq/keystep/keystep-how-to-synchronize-my-keystep-with-an-analog-clock Also, just guessing looking at the back of the GI via img search, it looks like you will want to connect the midi out from the keystep to the midi in on the juno, plug in a sequence, hit play, and see what happens. You might have to dick around with some settings within the keystep midi config, good luck!
So, I had a dick around and I think I've found the answer - I was trying to drive the keystep tempo from the Juno Gi whilst the midi cable was going from out on the keystep to in on the Gi (doing that operates the Gi perfectly from the keystep - all fine here). When i swapped the in's and out's round (and set the keystep clock source to midi) it appears that the Gi recorder tempo dictates the keystep tempo (I can't hear anything, obviously, but I can see the Tap button blink rate change in response to changing the tempo on the Gi). So my next question is, if I connect midi cables both ways will it work how I hope - ie the keystep "plays" the Gi keyboard sounds, and the Gi tells it what tempo to play at? I would try this now but I don't have another midi cable to hand. Apologies for the basic questions - I did say I was a midi newbie, and I've got learn somehow!
@@GaryJDavies That's a good sign, that means they can at least communicate, but it sounds like the Juno is set to be the master clock and the keystep is following its lead. I didn't get into the sync'ing up part of the keystep, as I don't have a ton of gear, and I don't fully understand that myself yet. But as a guess, check out those mini switches on the back of the keystep. www.arturia.com/faq/keystep/how-to-select-a-master-clock-source-on-my-keystep I have mine set up like the first picture, and it seems to do the trick to make the keystep be the master clock for whatever I plug it into.
@@NickCapron Well I got a second midi cable and now it works perfectly! I set the mini switches on the back to midi rather than internal so the keystep now takes its tempo from the Juno Gi, and renders the rate knob on my keystep inactive. Now my sequences and arp's sync perfectly with the digital recorder tempo in the Gi - very happy! Thanks Nick for helping me figure this out.
Very good tutorial!a question about my set? control my Volca FM with the keystep. No connection!?! Midi channels are the same, defective Midi cable excluded. what am I doing wrong? Settings in the Midi Control Center ..? Please help me, thank you
Hey Mattisse, do you have another instrument beyond the FM to test the keystep with, if it can play notes on another device we know that the issue is at least not with the keystep
@@NickCapron I tried it with each of my little Volca's (FM, Bass, Keys and Nubass) with Midi cable. Again and again no control on the Volca. To find out, if a command goes out at the Keystep I have the "Audio 8 DJ" (Native Instruments) connected to the Keystep. Keystep MIDI-OUT and Audio 8 DJ MIDI-IN. When a command is received from Keystep the audio 8 DJ will flash. Is it possible that the Volca does not understand the Keystep. My setting in the Midi controller? Thanks
Okay, well that's good news that your audio 8 is registering midi messages. Very strange none of your volcas are picking up midi notes... Have you configured the midi channel that each volca is picking up on... Kinda scratching my head why your volcas aren't picking up midi notes, the fact none of them do is telling me the problem is with the keystep or it's settings, unless your volcas are listening on a midi ch that your keystep isn't set to transmit on...
It should I think... Make sure the switches on the back of the keystep are set for USB www.arturia.com/faq/keystep/how-to-select-a-master-clock-source-on-my-keystep And make sure your daw is sending the clock via USB to the keystep
I have a question, Im connecting 4 different synths via Midi on the Keystep but 3 are in Channel 1 how can I set up the Keystep to put in 4 different channels different Synths?
Hey Omar, I take it the 3 synths that are listening on channel 1,can't be adjusted to listen on other channels? That is what I would look into first, but assuming they are stuck listening on channel 1, with a regular keystep like mine, I'd look into an external midi switch that could control the downstream midi data and filter it just to the devices you want it to go. Perhaps others here have better ideas as I haven't had to do that myself yet!
Hey Stoney Tony, if you are using hardware synths, you will need to change on the synth, what MIDI channel it is listening on for incoming MIDI notes via your keystep. For example, on the volca I'm using in this video, I had to go into the global parameters of the Volca FM, to set up what MIDI CH it listens on for incoming MIDI Notes. Then on the keystep, when I want to play a specific instrument, I just change the channel the keystep sends to using the shift + key to the MIDI channel I want to play on. Hope that helps!
@@NickCapron thanks for the help ( i"m a begInner ).i conneted my keystep to my td-3 ,for td-3 to rd-8 to my volca bass via midi ,it work As intended i believe 😀 Still have a problem with my moog werkstatt/CV expander i cant assign it to a different channel ( maybe its not oossible but it would be nice) Still waiting for my microfreak ( can't wait )
Ive got a head-scratcher - cant get Hydra synth to accept aftertouch from Keystep. I have aftertouch on in midi on the hydra and set to mono. Cant figure it out.
Hey NB does this help? www.reddit.com/r/synthesizers/comments/865u8k/_/ Seems like you might have to go into the keystep software and determine how it sends aftertouch, and then on the hydrasynth, make sure it's listening for what the keystep is sending.
@@NickCapron Hey Thanks for the link. I figured it out! I was looking in the wrong spot - system midi - and the correct place I needed to go was to mod matrix and switch aftertouchpoly to aftertouchmono.
Im struggling so hard to get the key step to sync with my Volca keys. hit the shift button and suddenly no noise. i haven't been able to get it synced since. Its a nightmare
Do you know what midi ch your keys is listening on? You can tell by holding down memory when turning on the Volca, the light flashing will indicate it. Once you know, change the keystep to listen to that ch by holding down shift and pushing the corresponding key to the blue ch # above it.
when I am in Keyboard mode the A note, the real A note :) turns into F# on Sequence or Arp mode. Which means all my keys are transposed 3rd. Why is that? is this a sort of bug or am I missing some sort of settings.. Please Help, I read the whole manual but couldn't find any solution.
That is odd! I will try to look into it. I'll see if there is a transpose setting that may have gone wild on you. Does the keystep show the same behavior when connected to something other then the Mother32?
@@NickCapron Hi Nick, apperantly I need to write my all sequences on C on m32. then there is no problem.Although I dont get it why I can not make my sequences on the key that I want. Thank you.
Negative, it's just a way to send MIDI chords by just pushing a single key. If you push that midi data to a mono synth, it will only play one note of that MIDI data.
Thank you for making this tutorial. For some reason, the 'TAP' light does not turn on when I press the 'PLAY' button. I was able to setup the chord mode. But the TAP light does not come on. I'm also able to stop the chord mode. I'm using Logic and running the keyboard with USB not MIDI.
@@leascaart can you check out page 38 of the manual, check out the microswitches on the back of your keystep, ensure the switches are set to internal. This should make the keystep to be the master clock. I wonder if the keystep is trying to get the clock from your pc via USB and causing an issue determining the tempo
@@NickCapron I changed the microswitches from USB to INTERNAL and the TAP light comes on red when I hit the PLAY button. But it is not in synch with my DAW Logic X. When I switch it back to USB mode, the TAP button does not work. Very strange.
Ok that's good news! At least your keystep doesn't sound faulty or anything, it's just having trouble getting the clock from logic via USB. Set your mini switches back on your keystep to pick up the clock via USB, and now you will need to do some googling to figure out how to connect your keystep to logic (I'd help more but I don't use logic) I found this vid doing a quick search that MAY help... czcams.com/video/xzE2d9GHqhA/video.html
Shades, I have a Sustain pedal I haven't been able to get working with mine either, I'll see if I can figure it out and shoot a quick video, I will let you know if I get it working or not.
czcams.com/video/m2f23Khe-c8/video.html (worked just fine when I connected it into the sustain slot on the back of the keystep) to get it to work with my setup, I had to change the CC for the sustain message and a little bit of setup on the Digitakt as outlined on the vid. Hope it helps.
Nope, I edited this with a free phone app Volgu. I actually stopped using it after making this video, as Volgu screwed up a bit of the video quality. I now use Sony Movie Studio on my desktop to do editing.
Hey sub it's a midi "controller" so it actually doesn't make noise on it's own. You will either need to plug it in into an actual hardware synth, or to your pc to control a virtual synth (vst) Lots of free VSTs to try with your computer, google best free VSTs for some options.
Hey Fabio, when I bought the keystep I was wondering the same thing. After googling for a bit I couldn't find a way to do this beyond mashing clear last button. I'll do another search and see if I can determine if that is the only way or if there is a clear option somewhere.
Ok, so doesn't look like there is an official way to clear the pattern, but from reading around, this should essentially do the same thing: 1. On the keystep, access the sequence number you want to delete via the seq/arp mode knob 2. When the sequence is NOT running, press these buttons: RECORD, TAP (Rest/Tie), STOP 3. This has effectively replace your sequence with a new sequence, 1 step long, where the step is a rest. forum.arturia.com/index.php?topic=89782.0 forum.arturia.com/index.php?topic=88107.0 If you find a better way, or this doesn't work, let me know!
Nick Capron hey Nick, thank you for response and research! Yes, this unofficial solution is a valid alternative. After some research I find the official solution available with latest firmware update: SHIFT + OCT UP + OCT DOWN :)) ..here the link: www.arturia.com/faq/keystep/keystep-shift-function-chart
Hey thanks for making the video. 1/32 Is pronounced "thirty-second". Not 1/30-tooth lol You never mention what your keystep is plugged into or what configurations you have made. Can you please explain a little more?
Haha, yeah my 5 months of experience shining through brightly when I made a horrible attempt at explaining what that knob does! Yeah the keystep is plugged into a Volca FM, which was has Pajen's custom firmware enabled to pick up velocity from the keystep. Beyond that, you can edit the settings on the Volca to not have the sequencer kick off when you push the play button on the keystep to start up the keystep sequencer or arp. Thanks for the comment and let me know if I missed the point on the configuration question.
@@NickCapron What are the connections? Do you have to do anything else besides hook up the cables? Do you have to go to the control center on the computer to configurate it?
@@joielollis I'll shoot a quick video when I get a chance, but you can run a MIDI cable from the keystep to the td-3. Out of the box the td-3 should be listing for midi notes from the keystep on CH1.

I had no clue, thanks for sharing, that is really cool!

I haven't used it with a DAW yet, but for gear, you will want to hook your MIDI Cable from the out on the keystep to the MIDI in on your synths to control them.
For channels, most gear (at least with my limited experience is set to channel 1, and this is usually customizable).

Thanks Nick great tutorial ive been using the hold bujtton wrong and had that arp shift octive locked in and was wondering how id done that, cheers!
Very good
Thanks Cathy!
Thanksss man
Great ez to follow vid. Hey guess what? I am now a subscriber - nice job!
Thx Jason, appreciate it!
Thanks Jacek, that makes a ton of sense, great description.
Is there a way to play/switch through multiple parts/patches on multiple synths all hooked up via midi in/through/out?
Oddly you sound like Ricky Tinez but especially near the end of the vid! Thanks for the tuto
Too funny, guess all the synth youtube I watch is subconsciously influencing me =)
thx for vid ! -- Might anyone know if the Keystep has separate recorded sequences for each midi channel ? (e.g.: A Bass sequence on midi 1, a separate melody output on midi 2 and chords output on midi channel 3 etcetera...) I am guessing that it is not possible, and that one can only play one of the 8 available sequences and simply route that one sequence to a selected Midi channel #. ..
hello.what program do you play? logic pro x or?
OK I dug up the manual for the SQ-1... the issue I'm seeing is with the SQ-1, I'm not seeing where you would patch the CV out items from the keystep(Pitch/Gate/MOD)
From the SQ-1
"CV - A OUT - GATE, CV - B OUT - GATE jacks
Connect these jacks to an external analog unit that you want to control. The
CV jacks output signals that control pitch or other parameters , and the GATE
jacks output gate signals that control the length of the notes.
IN - SYNC - OUT jacks
Connect these jacks to an analog synthesizer such as the volca series or the
monotribe, so that the two units will operate in synchronization. The SYNC
OUT jack outputs a 5V pulse that’s 15 ms long at the beginning of each step.
If you connect the SYNC OUT jack of a volca series unit or the monotribe to
the SYNC IN jack of the SQ-1, the step clock of the SQ-1 is ignored, and steps
advance according to the pulses that are input. Use this if you want steps to
synchronize to the pulses that are output from a monotribe or other analog
sequencer, or from an audio output of your DAW."
So from what I can tell, the SQ-1 is only outputing CV signals or midi data, but doesn't have options for taking MIDI/CV in from other devices?
No problem, that midi out from the sq-1 may be handy for your setup, I came across the following off of reddit
"I think it should work, I've had my zoia send notes for the keystep sequencer tho it was a bunch of trial and error with the keystep switches and my ableton. It has(keystep) a midi input for a reason, you could also convert the midi into cv with its cv/gates in the back for other hardware"
So maybe if you run the midi out from the sq1 to the keystep, I'm thinking it might be able to grab the sq-1 clock from that connection (just update the small white switches on the back to get the clock via midi) and then it should get the note/gate (not sure if the sq1 sends mod messages but the mod strip on the keystep should) from the sq1 too, which it should be able to send out from the keystep to other gear via its CV out ports on the back
So if i understand correctly, you can, for example, expanding the korg volcas 16 steps to 64 steps with the arturia?
In case your Keystep is not acting like in the video, make sure that the dip keys on the back are set to INTERNAL. Took me 5 minutes to figure out
Good point, sorry I should of mentioned that in the vid, thx for posting for others!
How do you edit the velocity sensitivity? I find it rather extreme for my liking.
Ah good call, when I have a sec I'll plug it into my PC and check out the editor to see if there is a velocity setting within it
Hey had a chance to look at this last night, you are going to want to take a quick look at velocity curve setting in the Arturia midi control software.
Made a quick vid here: czcams.com/video/DWPUNp2AIT0/video.html
I just got the Keystep delivered today, the 37 version of this one. It's great but can't figure out how to get the arp or seq. function working at all :(
When I press play/pause to start either - nothing happens! Maybe it doesn't work in arrangement mode :(
Hey Chris, I don't have any ableton experience, but came across this post with a screen shot of how someone has set up their keystep in ableton:
gearspace.com/board/electronic-music-instruments-and-electronic-music-production/1269133-arturia-keystep-midi-clock-sync-question.html
Wish I had more for you, good luck!
For some reason, when i try to use the arp to change octives while holding one note, it doesn't work. It just repeats the same note. I hold a note, then hold shft and press oct + but nothing happens, it just repeats the same note... Anyone have any idea whats going on here? Your help would be appreciated. Thanks!
I have the same problem. Did you find a soulution?
I'm guessing all this will work on my Behringer Swing!?
Too funny Andy =), you are probably right!
what usb hub are you using here to connect the keystep to computer?
Hey for this video I just am using a generic USB "wallwart" to provide power to the keystep.
I am trying to do arp octave.
In this video you;
1. hold a note
2. hold shift then presses oct+
and it does an octave two note arpeggio, whilst on mine nothing happens... its such a simple process that I cant see where im going wrong.
The controller is going into a behringer k-2
when i hold shift oct+ or oct- lights up by itself.
Hey Gary, I don't have a Juno Gi, otherwise I'd try to figure it out, but the following link MAY help:
www.arturia.com/faq/keystep/keystep-how-to-synchronize-my-keystep-with-an-analog-clock
Also, just guessing looking at the back of the GI via img search, it looks like you will want to connect the midi out from the keystep to the midi in on the juno, plug in a sequence, hit play, and see what happens.
You might have to dick around with some settings within the keystep midi config, good luck!
Nick Capron thanks so much Nick, I will have a good look at this later and report back 👍🏻
So, I had a dick around and I think I've found the answer - I was trying to drive the keystep tempo from the Juno Gi whilst the midi cable was going from out on the keystep to in on the Gi (doing that operates the Gi perfectly from the keystep - all fine here).
But as a guess, check out those mini switches on the back of the keystep.
www.arturia.com/faq/keystep/how-to-select-a-master-clock-source-on-my-keystep
I have mine set up like the first picture, and it seems to do the trick to make the keystep be the master clock for whatever I plug it into.
How about cv/gate and arp?
When I press the play/pause button, nothing happens. Is this something wrong with my key step? Just acts as a normal piano, no matter what I try
To find out, if a command goes out at the Keystep I have the
"Audio 8 DJ" (Native Instruments) connected to the Keystep.
Kinda scratching my head why your volcas aren't picking up midi notes, the fact none of them do is telling me the problem is with the keystep or it's settings, unless your volcas are listening on a midi ch that your keystep isn't set to transmit on...
does the keystep sync the arp tempo with the daw tempo?
It should I think...
Make sure the switches on the back of the keystep are set for USB
www.arturia.com/faq/keystep/how-to-select-a-master-clock-source-on-my-keystep
And make sure your daw is sending the clock via USB to the keystep
@@NickCapron Thanks 💪
How do you assign the different synths to the channels? In midi control center
@@NickCapron thanks for the help ( i"m a begInner ).i conneted my keystep to my td-3 ,for td-3 to rd-8 to my volca bass via midi ,it work As intended i believe 😀

Still waiting for my microfreak ( can't wait )
Ive got a head-scratcher - cant get Hydra synth to accept aftertouch from Keystep. I have aftertouch on in midi on the hydra and set to mono. Cant figure it out.
Hey NB does this help?
www.reddit.com/r/synthesizers/comments/865u8k/_/
Seems like you might have to go into the keystep software and determine how it sends aftertouch, and then on the hydrasynth, make sure it's listening for what the keystep is sending.
Ps: I control Mother32. Which is working fine with out key step...
Thank you.
mine is not working. when i press the play pause button it flashes and does not start the arp
So in chord Mode you can turn mono synths to Poly?
Negative, it's just a way to send MIDI chords by just pushing a single key.
If you push that midi data to a mono synth, it will only play one note of that MIDI data.
when i push play it just flashes? and does nothing
my controller doesnt arp when i try to arp. I made random piano synth in live, then did the chords it worked , the arp doesnt? any ideaS?

Hey Lou Lou, is this happening for both arp and sequence modes?
@@NickCapron Yes, it is. It happens on both Arp and Seq modes.
Set your mini switches back on your keystep to pick up the clock via USB, and now you will need to do some googling to figure out how to connect your keystep to logic (I'd help more but I don't use logic)

how come my keystep doesnt produce any sound
Hey sub it's a midi "controller" so it actually doesn't make noise on it's own. You will either need to plug it in into an actual hardware synth, or to your pc to control a virtual synth (vst)
Lots of free VSTs to try with your computer, google best free VSTs for some options.
how to clean the whole pattern at once?
Hey Fabio, when I bought the keystep I was wondering the same thing. After googling for a bit I couldn't find a way to do this beyond mashing clear last button.
I'll do another search and see if I can determine if that is the only way or if there is a clear option somewhere.
Ok, so doesn't look like there is an official way to clear the pattern, but from reading around, this should essentially do the same thing:
1. On the keystep, access the sequence number you want to delete via the seq/arp mode knob
2. When the sequence is NOT running, press these buttons: RECORD, TAP (Rest/Tie), STOP
3. This has effectively replace your sequence with a new sequence, 1 step long, where the step is a rest.
