  • I love BOTH of these games, and there's always been a debate on which game is better. With that being said, I thought that I would chime in with my opinions on what each game does better than the other.
Only thing is...this is 2 whole years after the release of these games.

Before I see any more Sweet Baby Inc comments:
I was unaware of them prior to making this video, and I think that it sucks to see how poorly-managed many AAA game studios are these days. To the point where they need to hire a consultant that has such a heavy influence on their games, and ultimately results in the games losing a bit of their soul for the sake of whatever message they’re trying to convey.
Thankfully, it looks like FromSoftware doesn’t deal with them hence why their games are still amazing, and I’m really looking forward to Elden Ring’s DLC come June this year!
That being said, I’m still going to make a Spider-Man 2 NG+ video because it gives me an opportunity to reevaluate a lot of things I said in my original Spider-Man 2 review, as well as poke fun at Sweet Baby Inc.
If that’s not something you’d be into watching, I do apologize in advance. More Elden Ring and Dark Souls content will be coming soon!

The problem is, people found out that once the souls formula clicks for you, the emotions you’ll get from overcoming what felt impossible initially, will have you jumping out of your chair, yelling out loud, cussing, laughing, and feeling amazing. THAT is emotion right there. No linear, scripted, voice acted, playable movie is going to elicit such emotion from so many players. Elden ring may not have you saying “awww…🥹🥹” and tug at your heart strings in the same way, but sure as god’s got sandals……. It will pull the strings directly attached to your body and make you jump up and yell“FUCK YEAH! I GOT YOU BITCH!” waking up everyone in the house when you finally beat that boss you’re stuck on. it’s positively heart pounding. and that’s just ONE aspect of what makes the souls series THE greatest of all time.

Elden ring isn't a masterpiece nor it is the best from software game. It shouldn't have won game of the year because it only won it based on popularity, and objectively speak its from most flawed game, they need to fix so many things there specially with the horrible bosses that are so bad, only a few are really good.
That being said, it is elden ring a bad game? No, it is not because it is a very fun game where you can have a great time, just don't let your feelings towards the Game control you.
God of War ragnarok isn't better than elden ring on a massive stomp or scale, it has many aspects that can be better but it is polished on a better way than elden ring and this is an objective truth, heck if you aren't new to these games just look at my profile picture and you'll know my love for from software and their games.

The later games 2018 and Ragnarok may not up to the scale of the older ones due to tech and camera limitations. Not to mention how it completely surpassed every expectation I had when it released. Once it came out I followed other playthroughs from content creators I enjoy, guided my friends through it all and shared experiences with them, it was a culmination of things that added up to something amazing. @@Kuvantorman, I'm going to be kind with you but you are objectively and subjectively wrong in so many things, so I'm going to be direct and be objective leaving aside my favoritism.
We know that elden ring isn't a masterpiece, it is nowhere near to be the best game coming from from software, that is bloodborne, and it has so many flaws because it is their most ambitious game.
Elden ring shouldn't have won the game of the year based only on popularity, but this doesn't mean it is a bad game ; it still is a good game where one can have lots of fun, and only because we acknowledge it's flaws doesn't mean that it is a sin or something like that ; it has terrible bosses where only a couple can be catalogue as good, it has the less value to replay it again compare to the other games and most importantly overall, it needs to be polished a lot more. God of War ragnarok should have won based only on this aspect, as well as many other games.
From must upgrade their Game to be better than this, lies of p is the best example of this and that Game also is better than almost all the games from software has made so far, only bloodborne and dark souls are above it.

@eliasfigarzon9813 Man I love when people attempt to pass their opinions off as concrete fact simply because they say it is, then claim that's not what they're doing. There's nothing factual or objective about your opinion at all. If anything it shows the very bias and favoritism you claim to free of. The irony in comments like that is just plain sad honestly. Humble yourself. There's no place for such a false sense of authority on who loves what video games for their own reasons. You don't get to dictate that.
Depending on who you ask literally every one of those games are masterpieces. Elden Ring, God of War, and Lies of P are all incredible games that do their own things perfectly in my opinion. None of them are without flaws nor should they be, the quarks are what make these titles even more special than your run of the mill story game. Bloodborne was also incredible, but that doesn't mean you won't find people who disagree or hate it.
OP was just expressing what they get out of the game and what keeps them interested. Then you had to come in here with some irrelevant, authoritarian objectivity ass comment like come on man be better. Just enjoy the games, let other people do the same and move on.

I got to the long Atreus section with all the walking and probably quit and started that game about 3 times before I finally just gave up on it. After a proper Souls game, I just feel like I’m doing chores when I play a game as hand-holdy as GOW. The first one I played a while back and liked it enough to beat it, second one is even more story and the same restrictiveness. I was hoping they would make the gameplay a little more interesting but it’s just more playable movie. Just not worth my time.

To be fair, I'm incredibly biased because I love FromSoft's games and have never touched a God of War game in my life. But I do believe Elden Ring is the better game for a few good reasons:
    1) It finally bridged the gap for new players to get on board with Souls. I saw people who had no interest in Souls actually get hyped for Elden Ring even before its release. And when it finally hit store shelves? Those same people loved it and even went back to play FromSoft's other games.
    2) It didn't compromise the already tried and true formula that Souls was known for but yet it also allowed a lot more accessibility than Dark Souls or Bloodborne. You're no longer committed to an area until the boss is killed; you're free to leave and come back when you're ready in Elden Ring. And you don't even have to fight certain bosses to get to new areas of the game! Take Liurna for example. You COULD go through Stormveil Castle, beat Godfrey (or Godrick, whichever) and come out to Liurna on the other side... OR you could take a narrow cliffside path that leads straight into Liurna and bypass all the headache. The game is made for sequence breaking!
    3) Lastly, it was a huge gamble on FromSoft's part that paid off incredibly. You hear "open world Dark Souls" and you get the idea at first but then you start to wonder what the game will do exactly to set itself apart from other open world tiles. Best I can describe it is it's like that initial feeling we all got when we first played a Zelda game: cryptic yet rewarding. You're not being railroaded from Point A to Point B. I had sessions with the game where I would decide what to do in that time; sometimes I'd ride Torrent for hours, other times I'd fight a boss that was giving me trouble or I'd go explore some catacombs. The game encourages the player to make their own adventure in that time.
That, to me, is what makes Elden Ring the better game.

The example from Elden Ring adds personality, establishes a social imbalance between the Tarnished and others and develops a rivalry between the player and certain factions. Elden ring was my first souls game. I had never even watched or touched and before it. In my first playthrough u chose the wretch class(no, I’m not joking) I died all, then died some more. Eventually I came across the forlorn evergoal and after several hrs killed darawell the bloodhound knight. The weapon I got carried me to the end of the game. I did a complete thorough sweep of each area before leaving. 127 hrs later I slayed a god. Then realized I missed dozens of side content and quests. I played again. And again. And again. After doing all that I played again.
Before Elden ring had come out, my favorite game ever was The legend of Zelda: ocarina of time. That has since changed.
I’ve put 23 full days into the game across over 10 playthroughs. After my most recent journey I’ve started hunting down more souls and souls like games. It’s quickly become my favorite Genre of games. Nothing comes close. The pain of dying and getting back up worse for ware & over coming the odds is addicting.
“Fall down 9x, get back up 10x”
    -Kairi Same
I have a class ready for the dlc on a 100% file without going into NG+. After that I will do a whole new character to see how seamlessly the dlc blends to the whole game without grinding or prep.
The DLC is coming out on my birthday and I couldn’t be more excited. I have the collectors edition & the Messmer helm pre ordered and vacation put in.

I'm in a similar boat. Never played FS games until I tried ds3 back in late 2021 because it was $10 on the steam winter sale and looked interesting. Killed Gundyr, then got hard stuck on a side boss and rage quit. Didn't touch their games again until early 2023 when I finally gave in to the urge to try elden ring. Was hesitant because I didn't want to buy another game that I wouldn't be able to play, but it was by far the most recommended game at the time and so I just bought it and told myself to prepare for a lot of dying. Went into it with a healthy mindset and an expectation of extreme difficulty - an expectation which was met with Margit. I took my time, got good, fell deeply in love with the game and have since played ds1-ds3 including all DLCs as well as sekiro. Fromsoft dominates my "favorite games" list now. It's actually crazy. Bout to platinum elden ring finally. Then might play sekiro again. Their games have genuinely lowered my view of most other developers.

To me GoW is somekind of interactive movie. You just direct your character from one scene to another, but characters won’t stop talking one sec. And you have absolutely no agency. The story is laid out for you, and you don’t even get to chose if you want to get to know it or not, since no one will shut up.
Its the complete opposite in Elden Ring, where dialogues are rare and enigmatic, where you need to deeply look (or watch hours of content on youtube) to start to grasp the story, and where basically you’re free to go wherever you want

Your character has 3-D movement. In God of war, you don’t. You can simply turn round and face the camera for instance. You have to rotate the whole world just to look at your character who is always on the left-hand side of the screen for some reason. That took me a long time to get used to. Also the gameplay is not as fun as Elden Ring since a huge section in GOW Ragnarok has the most boring section with Atreus

The writing was already in the wall at the soft reboot. Kratos is now a softer guy compared to the power fantasy savage he was at the trilogy.
And to top it off the reboot was written by a guy who hated the main trilogy. And this is a Sweet Baby project no less. Hence why Kratos cries now, why Agroboda and her nan is black in Yggdrisil, why Kratos hasn't snapped Freya's neck when she tried to kill him and his son.

Elden ring is the better *game* while God of War Ragnarök is a better *story*
Fromsoft really made a landmark impact with a game that many consider to be the gold standard in open world design. The exploration, the lore, the variety, the scale, the world & the bosses are all amazing. Finished it over 40 times, it’s never bored me. Only gripes I have it with Elden ring are the occasional BS difficulty spikes & how it sometimes funnels players into more Meta builds.
But I gotta give Ragnarök credit. Addictive combat, satisfying character arcs, Oscar worthy performances, a well written story & plenty of side content. And let’s not forget the bosses, the fight with Thor is so bombastic & badass. Only downside would be that it feels too much like a movie (especially Ironwood) & the finale was a little anticlimactic.

Both games are excellent games, and had they been released on separate years, there wouldn't be competition between them for GOTY. However, Elden Ring honestly deserves its place. While comparatively few players have beaten it (I haven't and am holding off for the DLC now), the game has always amazed me in the combination of visuals, the environmental storytelling, the sheer scale of the game, and how From Software managed to bring it all together. God of War: Ragnarok, does a lot of the same, but it is a narratively focused game and isn't really reflective of your playstyle or the fact that it is your choices which impact the story. Because the story is yours in Elden Ring.
As for the difficulty, I am a veteran of From Software games, mostly the Dark Souls series and Bloodborne, I expect the difficulty. At the same time, I will not diss God of War: Ragnarok either. As I said, had they been released on different years, they wouldn't have had to fight for GOTY, with one losing out. And not because of lack of quality, but because one simply scratched the itch for a quality game even better than the other. Which says it all right there.

3:40 Elden ring's completion rate is actually pretty normal for most games on steam. If you check of the percentages on most games, 20% seems to be the average percentage of people that complete the game.

For me Elden ring is by far the best. I got bored of God of War pretty quickly but Elden Ring I've done multiple runs and still find new things.

I think I managed to play god of war ragnarok for maybe 2 hours before closing it down and never thinking about it again (I did not start at the beginning). The combat was good, but I couldn't help but feel like I was playing through an extended tutorial. I am surprised to see people rate it so highly.

Both games are fantastic and I've played through both a few times each. However, Elden ring is on another level. It is a legendary, all time great game. I think most people (even older gamers like me) would agree it is at least a top 10, even top 5 all time. I'm sure many would even put it on the top.

I played elden ring and got my ass kicked by tree sentinel for 4 hours and quit. I continued to patiently wait for ragnorok and it didn’t disappoint. I loved it. But despite that, i still respected elden ring for what it was and what it represented and thought that the game just wasnt for me. I was not mad it won game of the year. (If anything i would have been upset if ragnorok won because it would have showed the game awards are rigged towards brain dead companies like ign).
I even came back to elden ring and now obsessed with it. I have beat the game fresh 5 times and i cant say the same or ragnorok, which again i still love. But what elden ring represents is much bigger.

Ambiguous as the stories can be, Soulsborne lore is often talked about long after launch because of the constant digging and discussion surrounding them. I won't say, between God of War and EldenRing, which is better, just that that alone I find has given Soulsborne games their longevity. I do appreciate linearity from time to time, which was why I enjoyed Lies of P, both from a narrative and level POV.
Also, no question, gameplay in Elden Ring was fun. As my first Soulsborne game, I got it two days after launch, played it for over a year, platinumed it, and even though I had since stopped playing it, I still have discussions over things like builds and lore over the game. To me, Elden Ring deserved GOTY over Ragnarok for the simple fact discussion was constant long after launch. You can bet that hype will not only be reinvigorated, but also extended when the DLC comes out.

Played about 26 hours of GoW trying to platinum it (not done yet) and got around 15 hours into my first Elden ring playthrough and honestly there is no comparison here. I’m a VERY casual “gamer” but Elden ring has me playing every day for multiple hours

God of War is more for casuals who are impressed by graphics and presentation.

Both are incredible games and I have more hours in elden ring(500) than Gow Ragnarok(170) but still like gow Ragnarok better. For me it’s just the linear story and also being a huge gow fan and only being a souls fan now that I’ve played elden ring.
