Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad Colorado | Historic Steam Train Cascade Canyon Express 4K

- čas přidán 20. 01. 2023
- In this video we take the Cascade Canyon Express route on the historic Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad. The route begins in Durango, Colorado and heads north into San Juan National Forest along the Animas River, and riding on the edge of 1,000+ foot drop offs in the canyon. The train turns around up in Cascade Canyon and after a 1 hour lunch heads back down to Durango. For this trip we took one of the historic steam locomotives and restored coach from the late 1800's. Riding the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad is an absolute must for anyone visiting Durango and is a one of a kind experience.

Thank you so much for this experience - I 'm 83 now & when I was a small kid in London we used to watch trains at the bottom of our garden go by on their way to Scotland - so many famous engines - this 'tooting' was often heard in my neighborhood ! It was the Great Northern Railway, and a shunting yard nearby where we watched the engines shunting the cargo vans on to their final trains - I spent many a day sitting on top of our shed to get a good look ! So these sounds are part of my childhood. It's so nice that they take care of the old stock & let people ride in the carriages nowadays. We have a local one also here in my now neighborhood in NJ - line goes up to Canada, the trains are not quite as old as this one, but still get plenty of local appreciation. Loved it !
They certainly have taken great care or the old rail line and steam locomotives and the historic cars. Very neat to experience riding in them. Glad we were able to help you relive some fond memories! Thank you for riding along with us!
I would like to thank you so much. I love trains and always wanted to ride one. Now that I'm older, living with many chronic health issues and mostly homebound I find great joy in watching videos like these. I can feel like I'm part of the adventure.
I’m glad you got to experience some of the beauty of this train ride, we love being able to share it with the world!
State of Colorado, one of the most beautiful states in the United States. Thanks for the video, Gilberto São Paulo-SP.Brasil.
No disagreements here! Thanks for watching!
I have ridden this many times.
I am a native Native Colorado thank the Lord.

So, youre... native American?
Favorite train ride of my life! Thank you so much for bringing back this wonderful memory!

Vielen Dank fürs Anschauen und Genießen der Fahrt!
Choo Choo!!! 🚂 I'm a huge Thomas the Train fan and have collected over 300 miniature trains so this is awesome!! 🚂🚃🚃 Also my neighbor Dave is a train conductor 😃👍
What a collection!
My neighbor Jim is a conductor. My other neighbor Dave drives an unlicensed windowless ice cream van.
@@AdventureEveryDay Yes, I love trains SO much I have already watched this video 17 times while wearing my Thomas the train costume. Please do more train videos!! 🚂🚃🚃💙💙💙💙
@@AM-eu4qj Whhhaaaattt?! I know Dave's famous rusty custard iced cream van!! 🍦🍨🍦🍨🍦He travels from Utah to Chicago and everywhere in between. Heard he got a DUI though and have witnessed his road rage a time or two! And rumor has it, iced cream isn't the only thing he sells out of that van... He's a slightly odd fella but everyone loves him! Best iced cream cones in town!
Not sure about this Dave person, but my favorite spot for old fashioned iced cream confections has got to be Dick’s creamery. Best thickest custard east of the Mississippi!
I was backpacking out of Durrango up into the Needle mountains and crossing the Animas River when I saw this train come through. Had no idea it was on the edge of a canyon most the time, glad I never went on this train. I would rather be hiking a few inches away from hundreds of feet of a cliff than trust this train and man's engineering. The Animas River was the greenest color, the greenest I have ever seen, even greener than the Green River in Kentucky!
Love the Animas Canyon and River!
Thank you for the train journey. 🚂
Thanks for riding along with us!
looks like the nicest railroad i have ever seen
We haven't been on many railroads, but this is certainly the best train ride we've done! Thanks for watching!
So beautiful and amazing too, enjoyed it fully.
Glad you enjoyed it! 💙💚💜
Beautiful footage; thanks for sharing💚
Thanks for watching!
Thank you for your wonderful video, it brings back great memories when my wife and I did this trip nearly 20 years ago. We were on a road trip arriving at Denver from the U.K., and were celebrating our retirement and my wife’s birthday. Wonderful memories, and we would love to do it again.
Sounds like it was a great trip, glad we could help relive those memories! Thanks for watching!

Looks like fun being on this train ride, and the views are simply amazing that I have enjoyed watching it again.
The views from the train are definitely breathtaking!!!

A wonderful, very scenic summertime in the Rockies excursion. The colors of the river were stunning. Kudos for showing the surrounding area of Durango at the end. Thank you for sharing and happy trails!
Glad you enjoyed it, thanks!
Thank you so much for this video!! We've been on this train at least a half dozen times and are not done riding it yet!! So beautiful !!!

Forest, river, field, cliff. You filmed the scenery from the train running excitedly, such as the river. The whole time I watched it, I felt like I was traveling by train. Thank you for sharing the fun video.😊

Oh, c'mon(!!); I thought that we were going all the way to Silverton(Laughs!!); maybe some other day?? If this was a through train to Silverton, with a full load, just think how happy all of the restaurateurs and souvenir shop people would be! I loved hearing all the kiddies aboard going all agog over everything! I loved looking at the Ponderosa Pines; some looked just about as tall as in California. Somehow, they don't look quite as tall, as you're driving along the 550. And I'd personally traveled the 550, the San Juan Skyway & Million-Dollar Highway routes, way back in 1970. Some of those trees and tall shrubs grow very close to the passage; if people stick too much of themselves out the windows, they could suffer cuts or worse. I wonder if it's possible with the timetables, for folks to live in Silverton, then to commute to jobs and back, in Durango? And a good thing that "Shack" and "A No. 1" ("Emperor of The North"), weren't busting it up, on this train! I'd guess this road's about as steep as it gets, without having to resort to Shay-Gear locomotives. And I wish that I could have smelled all of that smoke. You know, when a computer has a good sound system, it feels like you're really on board this train.
Mmmm the smell of train smoke is intoxicating! I love it! I love huffing the train smoke really fast several times in a row and then holding my breath when my lungs are full of smoke. It makes me lightheaded and cough uncontrollably. It's like nature's Xanax. Choo Choo!!! 🚂🚃🚃🚃 Trains are magical, aren't they?! ☺️ 💕
@@banana.lollipop Yup, with today's electro-diesel locomotives & hermetically-sealed passenger coaches, the smell of burning coal or wood, is a thing of the past.
Hopefully next time we're down in Durango we'll have the time go go all the way up to Silverton and back, that would be a great video to share. Haha definitely need to be careful sticking arms and other limbs outside the train, some areas are very close to some pretty unforgiving obstacles! The sights, sounds and smells on the train are reminiscent of a bygone era, quite nice to experience!
@@AdventureEveryDay Very true... My neighbor Dave actually got his banana clipped while riding on a train since it was hanging out the window when a tree branch got a hold of it. Be careful & keep ALL limbs in the train at all times!
@@swithinbarclay4797 Yep, the "green" hippies have to try to take the fun out of everything! People these days will never know the magic of Thomas the train. The classic sight, smell and sound is unbeatable. They want all cars and trains to be electric so they'll have complete control over us. They can turn off your train or car remotely. I'll never ride another train again. Thomas rode those rails for freedom. Thomas would be spinning his wheels in his grave if he knew of all this "green" clownery. Looks like I'll be riding my bicycle!
Amazing..wish I could go there. We r able to enjoy this beautiful nature through your lense..thank u for this...stay blessed...
Thanks for riding along and enjoying the views with us!
Just dreaming ...beautiful
♥️ Thanks for watching!
Took this trip in June 2023. The long climb from Durango to Silverton was beautiful in a gondola car (no glass - open air) with blue skies all morning. Two steam engines pulled us up and we made two stops for water. It's quite slow and the rails are rather rough in places, swaying the cars quite a bit. We nearly stopped to get an adolescent moose off the track near Silverton. Best deal on the train is the $10 souvenir cup from the snack car with free refills. Lunch in Silverton was two hours and DO NOT BE LATE boarding the train as it will leave without you. Silverton looked just like a mining town in Alaska with exactly one paved road. Many travelers stay in Silverton - it's not just railroad passengers there.
The trip back to Durango was disappointing as the sky shifted to overcast/raining and the slow ride was getting pretty tiring. Every Coloradan I spoke to on this vacation said 2023 has the most rain they have ever seen. Everywhere I went was green, even the high deserts along US Highway 285 where it is flat for many miles at 7500 feet (2300 meters) above sea level.
It is cheaper and less tiring if you take the train from Durango to Silverton, then the bus back. You could also spend a night or three in Silverton, then take the train back to Durango. I'm pretty sure all the steam locomotives have been converted from coal to oil, except perhaps one that provides special rides.
💚
Thanks so much for sharing! Now this trip is on yet another of my TRAIN bucket lists of to-do's!
It’s one of the highest rated scenic train routes in the country, and it’s easy to see why after going for a ride! Thanks for watching!
I went when I was 12 with my papaw and I can't wait to take my daughter in May 2024! She is 16. I hope she loves it at much as I did! 26 years has been long enough! I'm ready to experience beautiful Colorado again! I'm in Alabama.
Beautiful landscape and train!
Thank's for the ride, from Norway🙂
Thanks for watching! 💛
Thank You very good ,extra movie
💙 Thanks for watching!
Been on this all the way to Silverton twice. Great train ride and video.
We’ve only ever done the Cascade Canyon Express, but definitely want to go all the way to Silverton sometime. How is the rest of the route north of the canyon?
@@AdventureEveryDay The train travels next to the river going around the curves and if you're lucky you can see waterfall as you go into Silverton. Be aware that you don't get much time in Silverton . Deboard and find food then almost be ready to get back on and go back to Durango.
Good to know, thanks for the tips!
Bellísimo .Gracias

I,m from Germany and I must say, you sent a great video in your channel. The szenary, the steam-loco and these old railcars, fantastic, like in some westernmovies. You see the electric loco in my avatar. This class went to be historical locos since about the beginning millenium. Nearly for about 50 years, this class was in use with comfortable and fast passengertrains. Thank you for this exciting video!. Sinceriously, Robert F.
The steam locomotive definitely remind me of the old west. It’s a very fun experience riding the train! Thanks for watching!
Viele Grüße aus Ludwigshafen a. Rh.
@@josefh.
Amazing road and amazingly beautiful canyon! Thanks for the exciting trip!

Gracias.

Interesting/breath takingly entertaining.😉. Excellent photography job enabling viewers to experience similar sensations as the train riders are. The clacking of the train wheels & blowing of the steam. Makes this presentation more authentic like riding on the train🚂. Yes I had the good fortune to visit some years ago-!😉. View4ing this presentation from the safe zone of my computer room. Along the " Space Coast " 🚀 of Florida🐊🐊. No scenic train🚂 rides here-!😭. Wishing viewers/R.R. employees a safe/healthy/prosperous ( 2024 ) 🌈🎉😉.
Thank you for Sharing this Nice vidéo. Merci beaucoup. Pozz svima ot sefer I marija. Francija 🥂

@@AdventureEveryDay Welcome👍
hubby and I are enjoying your videos, we especially like this one because we are railfans. I personally like that you don't talk all the way through and use notations instead. Thanks for sharing
Glad you enjoyed the ride and the sights and sounds! Thanks for watching!
Totally agree about the sound - I hate so many videos because the creator thinks they have to talk non stop & give their opinions all the way thru when all we want is the chance to see places we haven't been & get the feel for the place ! Sometimes I find myself yelling "Shut up you are spoiling the video !". The natural sounds of a place are lovely !
And sometimes - even worse - they put themsleves in the darned video as they talk - as tho we want to see them as well !
Rode this train in 98. Loved it.

I'm always looking for new works. This time it was a train trip, so it was fresh. The difference from Japan is that the river bank protection remains natural. I have one request, but this time I would like a video of the Grand Canyon Railway.
We would love to visit Japan and ride the rails through the wonderful country! Hopefully someday soon we’ll be able to see the Grand Canyon railway. Thanks for watching!
