- Dean is our skipper - he's very good at skippering and espcially filling suit bottles ... but can he dive?
First to clip in and last to ascend - 1h at ~65m - yes he can dive ;)
Watch here a dive, over GB's shoulder, with Dean. Shame the memory card filled and you can't hear me laughing how much deco he had :D :D :D
The SS Empire Heritage was built in 1930 by Armstrong Whitworth & Company in Newcastle-upon-Tyne but actually started life under another name as the Tafelberg, a 15,000-ton steam tanker used as a whale factory ship in South Africa. In 1941 she hit a mine and after reapir she was re-purposed and renamed Empire Heritage in 1943.
In September 1944 she left New York on her way to Liverpool carrying a heavy cargo of war supplies including Sherman tanks, half-tracks and trucks. By the 8th, she was 15 miles northwest of Malin Head and here she was torpedoed twice by the German sub U-482 - she went down fast with her cargo (now scattered all over the bottom) and a loss of 113 lives. An escort ship, MV Pinto (see a bit of the Pinto here: • You won't believe this... ) attempted to rescue the survivors but was also hit and sank in the same attack.
