    I love the Final Cut, there is so much emotion on that album from Roger. the wall was ground breaking. Animals is a masterpiece, and Dark Side of The Moon is incredible, especially given when it was released. I can remember peeling away the cellophane of my vinyl in anticipation when it was released and being gob smacked at the end of the first hearing.

    • @SpaceCattttt
      @SpaceCattttt Před 6 lety +5

      The Final Cut is not a bad album at all. It's an unhappy album, both given how it was created while the band was imploding, and in its subject matter,
      but there's not a bad track on it. The problem is that the theme of the album doesn't mean very much if the listener isn't closely familiar with British politics
      of the 80s, and specifically with Thatcher and the Falklands war.
      Artists can't help what inspires them, but I think it's a shame that it had to be that particular war that inspired Roger to write those songs, since it immediately dates the album
      and makes it an artifact of its time. The other Pink Floyd albums have much looser concepts, and are more timeless as a result.
      As soon as you write about a specific event, time or place, particularly something that happened fairly recently, you limit your vision.
      Dark Side or The Wall can mean any number of things to anyone who listens to them, but The Final Cut is only about that damn war.

    • @spaceclown7650
      @spaceclown7650 Před 4 lety +1

      I know Floyd fans who swear The Final Cut is an unrecognized gem in their catalogue. But tbh I could never understand the love. To me it's more like a Waters solo album. And if I want a good Waters solo album I have Radio KAOS.

  • @ivangushkov3651
    @ivangushkov3651 Před 6 lety +48

    I disagree completely about Ummagumma. When people ask me for my favorite PF album I always say Ummagumma, simply to start the discussion about this little misunderstood gem. Its not my favorite, but its probably top 5 or 6 and I think it is one of their best. Hear me out.
    Lets start with the live versions. You were quick to dismiss them, and I can see why HOWEVER there is 1 song there that was a single and the first LP it appeared on was Ummagumma. Talking of course about Careful with that Axe Eugene. I am aware how singles were treated at the time, but we know better. Careful with that axe Eugene was an Ummagumma track. That song is DECADES ahead of its time. It has what I can only describe as black metal vocals on it. Not only do they sound like black metal vocals, they serve the same purpose that is to convey a deeply emotional and cathartic feeling. Even if you disagree with me that those are black metal vocals, everyone can agree that they are extreme vocals.
    Now onto the studio album. It is not entertaining music, but we love progressive music we can agree that music need not be entertaining. On those grounds, Ummagumma can be considered an avant-garde album, especially with songs like Several furry (wont type the rest here xD). Outside of a few weird composers absolutely no one was doing music like that at the time. Surely that deserves some praise. And its not all avant-garde either, you do have cool progressive songs like The Narrow way 3.
    Overall I think Ummagumma is absolutely their most underrated album and for damn shame. Its a funky little experience, that was creative in many ways. I think you are spot on about Atom heart mother and Alans psychedelic breakfast. It is also one of PFs misunderstood albums and much of my defense for Ummagumma can be extended to it as well :P

      Can we really talk seriously about the vocals for Careful With That Axe, Eugene? I mean, it's just two lines and the rest they repeat the title of the song. They don't even sing it. It's not a bad song, but it's more of an experiment than a song. Ummagumma is a requirement for Floyd fans, but it is still one of their weaker albums as far as popularity. I like experimentation, but when every song is an experiment it gets old.

Off the top of my head I’d put it above more and personally I’d put it over anything after the wall (maybe with the exception of MLoR) but in my humble opinion MORE is their worst, some ok tracks on it but to me it’s my least favorite. I listened to it a couple times fairly recently and it was fine but it doesn’t wow me and those last couple listens didn’t really boost it on my list like my last couple listens of ummagumma did.

      And Syd's choppy style of writing inspired lots of interesting bands in the post punk / new wave era. The later Pink Floyd inspired no-one. I do like Floyd from Meddle to Wish You Where Here, but they were a rock band. Syd's Floyd were unfathomable.

    • @chrisallan4717
      @chrisallan4717 Před 6 lety +3

      @@samwilson2784 I disagree about them being uncanny. They couldn't replicate Syd's style. Roger's attempts are either weird enough but too serious, or comical but more conventional, while Rick's are much softer. They just couldn't write like Syd. And that's a good thing, since they quickly found their own way of writing and they (mostly Roger) had a lot a lot to bring to the table songwriting-wise. Also, this problem was only in 1968. By 1969, they found their way of doing things and nothing better to signify that than not doing singles anymore.

TFC is definitly a step down compared what came before it. I personally think AMLOR is underrated. I know it is cliché in areas, but there is some really great songs like The Dogs of War, A New Machine, and ect. Production is really great, mixing, Gilmor sounds great. I know hardcores hate it, but the whole thing of "it's not a REAL Pink Floyd album" is a very fanatic thing to say.

    I think the Wall is the best. Why?
    Imo the emotions work best for me.
    When waters screams in songs like one of my turns, hey you, don't leave me now, ..... That really gets me. The transitions between slow, melancholic and harder music are so well done.
    I actually love almost every song of this album. And even if heard another brick in the walls solo 10.000 times now, I still think it's Floyd's best. But I think that's personal preference.
    In my opinion the wall is way better than The Dark side of the moon. The album concept works much better. TDSOTM's songs are individually good. But I think us and them is one of the worst Pink Floyd's songs.

    Got to give you credit for Atom Heart Mother. You had brave choices. I don't think I could rank Pink Floyd from worst to first. (my brain doesn't work that way_ However, I thoroughly enjoyed your list, facial expressions, and comments.
    My friend bought "The Wall" the day it came out. We listened to The Wall that night for 8 strait hours, driving from Texas towards Canada. Beer, sandwiches, and party favors.
    My point? Mother, Comfortably Numb, and Another Brick weren't hits yet. So our virgin ears heard it all without familiarity or prejudice. Can't put the Genie back into the bottle for you Notes, however I totally understand your viewpoint and empathize with you. Have you had a similar experience Notes? What album did you own before its hits sprang up like mushrooms after torrential rains ? Before you got sick from overexposure?

      That is an excellent point! If those songs were apart of the listening experience without any prior exposure to it (as it really is intended to be) I feel my enjoyment of the wall would increase. But sadly, I can't put that Genie back in the bottle as you said :(
      As I'm a bit younger a lot of those songs I heard after the hype. And it's a shame that with today's marketing, we hear those singles well before the album is actually released. I guess the only one that I can think of off the top of my head is Afterglow from Genesis. I still consider it part three of the ending of Wind and Wuthering, and not really a 'stand alone single'.

      Disregarding the order, this is probably a pretty safely-fair combination of albums for the "top-5". I think we'd be splitting hairs, as far as debating the exact order...but I'm pretty certain that these albums really represent the epicenter of what Pink Floyd means to everyone. Piper at the Gates of Dawn is obviously an important record for many...so, maybe that would be 6th (if not debatably 5th)? Whatever the case, anyone arguing against these being the 5 epicenters are either clearly a bit zealous about their personal opinions (even if they're justified opinions), or they're thinking too much about the charts and not the spirit of the band. These five represent the happy-medium, as far as both these two clashing statistics.

      Probably because the music isn't really composed or thought through. It's "experimental" music, which in this case means that they simply started recording whatever
      sonic toys they had lying around, hoping for the best. And when the best didn't happen, they just released whatever the hell they did get. And it was BAD.
      But the live songs are brilliant.

    Saying The Wall is overrated and The Division Bell underrated?....this makes me reevaluate my opinion of you....The Wall is one of my favorite albums and it´s a masterpiece as The Dark Side, while The Division Bell is just plain boring most of the time...And I did know that you like Atom Heart Mother, but number one??? Are you serious?? This album is just overblown and the Psychedelic Breakfast is just a bad song. Even the band say that the album is a pile of horseshit.

    • @jaiaq292
      @jaiaq292 Před 5 lety

      The Wall has some really good filler tracks but the division bell is just a lower quality all around. The Wall is my favorite Floyd album due to the incredible amount of amazing songs, tracks like Run Like Hell, Waiting for the Worms (My favorite song, period.), The Trial, The Thin Ice, The Happiest Days of our Lives, In The Flesh, In the Flesh?, and The Young Lust. Even the radio songs and singles like ABITWP2, Mother, One of my Turns, and Hey You are great in their own right. And I earnestly don’t believe the Division Bell is up to that standard, and neither is any Floyd album (expect for Meddle, DSOTM, WYWH, and Animals, arguments about those are fun.)
