  • Chapter 9 of the Constitution mandates the creation of Institutions designed to protect and support democracy. One of these institutions is the Public Protector, which is a body independent from government or political parties. The Public Protector’s job is to investigate claims of abuse of power; unfair or rude treatment; unnecessary delays; non-adherence to rules; dishonest or improper handling of money; and personal gain through bribes and corruption. Anyone can write to, phone or visit the Public Protector’s offices around the country directly or on someone’s behalf.
The Public Protector will at times try and resolve matters by convincing the parties concerned to correct their mistakes. If wrongdoing is discovered, the Public Protector will issue a report which is binding, and often order remedial action to be taken.
