@@weatherthemno, it's because English people were uniquely kind to their slaves. Which is why Haiti and Al Zanj had massive slave revolts where colonists were all killed, and English slave colonies were peacefully emancipated. English were kinder to blacks than they were to the Irish.

He served the United States against the Confederacy. Technically it was single nation, because the Confederacy lost, but it’s more accurate to think of it as he was fighting for the free states against the slave states.

As a Portuguese, and being descednt of the Empire who basically started slavery I feel the most compassion towards every human who suffered to the core of their being. The sad thing is almost every slave sold to European slavers were sold by other Africans.
The Portuguese weren't the only people involved in slavery it's still common in most Arab countries to this day, and people of all races are being sold. Some societies evolve and some stay subhuman.
