I would use the chisel method on the old type of spheres. Or use a handy tool for oilfilter cartridges. Or you loosen the screw and the Clip, take out the complete assembly and mount a new rubber cuff too.
I only use a chisel on the throw-away modern spheres. The metal is very soft and you can chisel huge amounts away before they come loose (at least that has been my experience!). I've never found an oil filter tool that clamps as tight as a strap wrench without breaking :)
