I think you are hitting on a few things. First you realize that you are your own worst enemy. This is true if you are the top or bottom of youtube. Those top guys have as many self doubts as the guy starting out. Second, you also realize that it's not a competition, it's really not. The competition is with your own worst enemy, you. I think the best way to look at YT is to look at it as a competition with your self. I play sports the same way, with me competing with the older version of myself. So as I get better, I always have something to work on. I played competitive hockey my whole life and I still improve after nearly 35 years of playing the game. I'm not winning against other people, I'm winning against my self, there just happens to be other players involved. We we start comparing ourselves against the benchmarks of others, we immediately lose because we aren't all starting from the same place. But your today can certainly be better than your yesterday. Hopefully that helps.

It's hard to keep up with the "demand". as soon as you finish and upload, that 'what should I do next question' is always lurking. But you have been and still are a big inspiration to this community which is something to be proud of alone, regardless of what you do next✌

You are truly my greatest inspiration for CZcams...You set out to raise the bar and you did it brother.. I honestly feel like you helped change the fabric of outdoor vids on CZcams by showing people you can be yourself out there, and putting real effort into your shots and editing. I can totally resonate with the social media talk.. I no longer use any social media, besides CZcams ( for the channel ) but do not and will not be linked with Facebook or Instagram. It truly does feel like your in a different world.
So glad to hear your back, and can't wait to see what you decide to do for your next shelter.

Out of the top utubers, u have kept ur mature and grateful nature of being able to do what u do. Most of them have went to the money as their only reason to care. It is a gift for us all to enjoy and accept the outdoors. None of us can lay claim to none of it, or the ideas we get from it. All in all man, stay you. I watch a lot of bushcraft videos, the majority of them seem like beginners like me, but the guys I like to watch the most are good at what they do and I learn from it, I enjoy it, and I strive to do better. You may not understand how important you are, even though other people do these same things, a select few do it with feness. The first guy I watched was trip smith because he incorporates kayaks and bushcraft type stuff together, then I came across you, mike, and Joe.....you made it all so much clearer and inspired me to better myself. Now I watch funky, bearded woodsman, and zed , and I continue to learn. Your videos show people there is more to life. I'm glad that all of you do what you do, and hope to make more videos of my own. Right now all I have are my kayak videos, but y'all have even got my son interested in more than PlayStation.

Most everything in bushcraft has been done or is being done. There are some out there putting out some great high quality videos. So what. If I don’t like their personality or if I can’t see myself sittin by a fire with them, I don’t watch them, no matter how good the quality is. From what I’ve seen of you, you are a good person and you have a good sense of humor. Therefore I’ll sit by a fire with you anytime. • @OldGoatintheWoods
    @OldGoatintheWoods Před 6 lety

Aww man. Yes, you have certainly raised that bar! Watched a lot of the channels out there and thought, 'I've been doing this type of camping thing for 40+ years they make it look cool!' Oh, sure there were breaks & stuff caused by this thing called LIFE, but there is something about the disconnection from that World & heading back to Nature. Never really thought of filming & sharing those adventures so extensively. Yeah, typically had a camera with me (actual film, none of this cool digital stuff) & have taken literally thousands of very amature stills. But stills only convey a small sharing of experience, or enjoyment. Sharing of that outdoor experience is partly why I believe I've been a Boy Scout Scoutmaster for past 10+ years.
To me, you guys (Joe, James, Doug, yourself & a handful of others) have opened up a nice outlet for me & others who also want to share the outdoor experience to a wider audience of others. As I learned from my initial video, there is much more to it than just turning on the camera & filming. As I have made my initial steps, I hope to improve my skills in this medium with what equipment my real life can provide. Does it have to be with a several hundred (or even thousands) dollar piece of equipment of this, jacket of that? NO! Any one can do it provided they don't get crazy, you know - want to climb Mt Everest, but they've only ever climbed a 100' hill with a 30 degree slope. Or plunk down a huge investment, only to realize they don't know how to use half of what they got effectively. Folks need to realize their skill & equipment limitations & develop from there. That's what I'm trying to do.
So, to shorten it up, because I've been told we only need to windup the clock - not build it.
Keep it up! We are our own worst enemy at times. I love the ideas you have, the goals you want to achieve. Hell, if I lived closer, I'd be volunteering to help! Keep your original ideal of your channel clear in your mind and share the fun your having along the way. As in the immortal words of Rob Schneider - "You can do it!"
Why do I say that? Look at one of Joe Robinet's recent videos - he's carrying a ROCK in his backpack to cook on!! Come on Man! Take some credit for that!! 😆👏

Like Joe said, just do you.

Good to have you back again! I think you definitely bring the humor to the outdoor/bushcraft genre. I’d say you are one of the funniest channels I subscribe to on CZcams. Keep up the great work man!

Glad to see you back! You are one of 22 bushcraft sites that I watch. Some I watch more than others, but I find myself constantly checking your site in hopes you've put out another video. There might be others that demonstrate more advanced bushcrafting skills, but I always look forward to watching you most, because your videos are so entertaining and enjoyable to watch. Thanks and please keep making your videos!

I don't think we watch you because there's already something like that out there. It because you are you in the videos and your personality is what made me subscribe and can't wait to see the another video!

  • @mittenstatebushcraft6381

Glad you're back. That was some real talk. I agree, social media can wear on ya and life can get in the way of our fun sometimes. I look forward to your future projects at base camp.

Here's the thing O, people come here to see you bro. I've seen Robinet tie a jam knot, I've seen Shawn James cook a steak, I've seen Mike at TA use a Ferro rod. I've seen all of you guys do the same thing on every single video and the reason I keep watching all these guys including yourself is because of your personality. The twist that you bring to your bushcrafting is unique to you. Joe can do a solid impression but he'll never say "look at dat meat boy" like you. Keep it up but more importantly, don't burn yourself out.

I love the "raw" aspect of your videos O. I also love seeing a local boy doing something that he wants to do that also I can learn a lot from as a new camper going out and trying to find a place to call my escape in the woods

Scrambled O - your channel is me and my wife's favorite on YT. Yes, there are others guys who do this full time, but you're a genuine entertainer with a unique and personal approachable-ness that others lack. We watch some of the other channels but always come back to yours for the personal touch. As many have said, I love the check-in/sign-out. Totally get that real life puts demands on your schedule, but I do hope you continue to put out videos. I don't live in a woodsy area anymore and really miss the simple joys of camping and fire-making that draw folks like us (and your 75k subs) to channels like this. Keep up the good work and just be content being you - you've got a great talent. Keep up the good work, bud!

there are a lot of other good videos out there that cover this topic, and each and every one has their own way of doing things, but there is only one you and only one of them. i keep coming back to you. you put a real sweet human touch where the others are fine but not like you. they teach too but act like a teacher and not someone that is a gentle person showing how to get things done like you do so do not sell yourself short. combine humor in with your videos serves to make a deeper connection with your viewers, this is why your channel is growing and why i have made you my one stop shopping for my camping instructions, i am going to try a winter trip this winter but i am not going alone till i get the hang of it.. i for one do not respond to a cold impersonal person that may know the skills and is a good teacher but for me i will not pay attention and lose interest not in the topic but in the teacher. this is how i am.

Your videos are awesome!! Make videos and be outdoors because you love to..not because you are trying to make everyone else happy. Your viewers and subscribers will come. We watch your channel and others because most of us aren’t able to make it outdoors as often as we want to be, so that’s why we watch them just so we can feel like we are there at camp with you and all the other outdoor channels.

I saw a great hack on Alaska The Last Frontier to help debark trees. Take a regular shovel and cut a few inches off the end of it with a grinder then sharpen the end. It seemed to work well for Shane.

I’m glad you aren’t a professional youtuber, because most of us have to go to work and do our bushcraft adventures on the side. It’s nice to see that the grind doesn’t keep you from getting out. Keep it up!

  • @bushmonkeycraftsrestoratio5332

Couldn’t agree more, I got rid of Facebook a few months back and it’s one of the best things I’ve ever done, if you have time just sit in a town centre and watch how many people are looking at the phones.
Also I like you just been you, yes looking back at the homestead videos you started with you have come a long way visually but as I’m sure the rest of the subs come here because you are a genuine guy, plus your Bushcraft recipes are amazing 😉
Instagram is a lot better than other social media imo it’s not so needy.

Hey Martin, Please Show us your Steak Challenge. I have always enjoyed your videos and I wish I had your enthusiasm and energy to do certain things in my life. My Dad just pasted away in August and I just left my Job after 18 years, this maybe a start in accomplishing all the tasks I have always wanted to do. It is time I need a change in my life and I look at this as an opportunity to keep learning new things.
Sometimes I have low self confidence when I want to complete a task or Job, that I think everyone is going to criticize or scrutinize that I just don't do that task. I realize I have to put the negative aside and just do it no mater what anyone thinks, and learn from my mistakes.
I have done the odd camp and I like my Steak cooked right on the coals 1 min on each side.

Make sure and plunge cut those trees before you fell them if it’s rotten proceed with caution. if they are rotten they’ll fall how they want no matter how you cut the felling notch.

I "unplugged" about a year ago roughly... Now I'm less than a week away from starting my first thru hike of the Appalachian trail, I still have my smartphone and will be taking It with me (might even post a pic or two) but it's liberating to know I'm doing this for me and don't give a damn about the likes It would get me. Other people are doing it but it's as much about personality as it is anything else, and it seems you've got plenty of people that dig yours. Keep making them and we'll keep watching.

Honestly I watch u're content because of u, not because of ur video quality. I would keep watching u even though u always came to the same woods, made the same meals cook ur same stuff, keep adding on ur shelter because u are different, maybe it's the fact that u are learning too or that u are funny or lade back. I don't know. The point is u are still my favorite bushcraft channel and I think u should stop thinking about what everyone else does and do u! over and out!
