Let's see... an Oscar for Best Actor, Porsche-driving class winner at LeMans (in his spare time), exceptionally rare lifelong Hollywood romance, a genuinely generous nature as exemplified through his "Newman's Own" charity (and gifting of an engraved Daytona to his daughter's boyfriend!), and underlying it all a fairly modest, down-to-earth guy. That's pretty epic. These watches are metaphors for a life well-lived, and what you're willing to pay for them is a relative thing.
These Paul Newman Daytonas seem to replicate like Russian dolls and seem like a ponzi scheme.

The HBO special on that love story was well made and has a very interesting story as Paul burned all the audio but kept all the interviews transcribed. I highly recommend it to everyone to watch. 4 part series I believe.

I don’t understand the fascination with Paul Newman. I would much rather have one of the Apollo pilots omegas. Newman was just an actor. Best thing he ever did was make that delicious salad dressing.
This was a GREAT episode. Amazing insight from 2 annoying (sometimes) watch nerds. I mean imagine the narrative - "Rolex and Paul Newman: timing success at every turn" or "Drive life with a great partner: Rolex and the Newmans"

I don't know why anyone would want to invest in another couple's "love story." It's not your love story so who cares? This is the equivalent of seeing celebrities in a restaurant and ogling over them. Buy a watch and make your own memories with it. Are we all emotionally bankrupt?
That's one of the main reasons for buying vintage in the first place. Even beyond watches, vintage pieces can have something interesting behind it like provenance or history. For a lot of people, paul newman was an icon and I'd imagine they'd find it to be cool to have something to remind of his legacy. Unfortunately for most of us, our lives aren't gonna be as interesting or as well known as newman's.
@@hijo5966 Forgive my French, but to say that an ordinary life isn't as interesting as Newman's is utter garbage. Every life is as important as the next. Every life is epic. It's sick that so many people worship celebrity culture. Why are we celebrating the lives of nurses, teachers, dishwashers, and asparagus pickers? Because we live in a world where your value is how much money you're worth. Our civilization is falling apart because we will not work together. We will not lift each other up. We will not value each other. The watch community is as guilty as the next.
@@davidhunternyc1 Vintage pieces don't just revolve around celebrity. Some people buy vintage pieces from the old couple down the street with a neat story behind their grandfather clock. While the old couple is interesting, they aren't gonna be as interesting compared to someone like Einstein. All life is valuable of course but that's different from being interesting or being "different" from the rest. I think it's perfectly human to have people to aspire to. People need their heroes and this type of behavior even goes far back as the dawn of the first civilizations. Even Einstein's manuscript sold for millions.
Perhaps the thought of people spending millions for a newman watch may be offensive to you, I could understand, but that's just the effect of newman's career and accomplishments as well as a following of people, some of which have way too much money to spend. I disagree that all celebrity culture is bad because even in the world of tiktok influencers and instagram models, there are those who are genuinely talented. Their talent granted them a following and that following wants to support their success through their own volition.
If Rolex would make an advertisement to boost the sales of the Daytona (haha). I think Rolex should look for Joanne Woodward and write about this story.
