  • I always remember seeing Ford trucks that had a tool box-looking door on the passenger side of the bed. When I first went to look at this 1973 F350, I thought it just had a larger version of that compartment. I was surprised to find out that this larger compartment was actually where the spare tire mounts! Ford changed the spare tire mounting location on the F350 for several reasons: 1. To allow for an auxiliary fuel tank to be mounted where the original spare tire location was., 2. To provide more room for the optional sliding rear bumper sleeves., 3. To provide easier access to the spare in the event that you needed to get to it while fully loaded with a large camper in the bed. What's really funky is how Ford custom made the wheeltub in the bed to fit the spare. Check out some of our other videos to see inside of the bed.

A friends neighbor had a similar truck. If i remember correctly the rear axel had a set back rear axel.
They had a rear bumper extenstion as the slide in camper that went about 3 ish feet past the back of the bed of the truck.
That truck was about a 1976 ish a nice set up for then. Ironically i think it was the same color as this one.
Hard to believe it was that long ago.
